On This Day In 1983: India's Cricket World Cup Legacy That Began On A Saturday

News1825-06-2025
On This Day: June 25, 1983, marked India's first Cricket World Cup win, starting a legacy that continued with wins on April 2, 2011, and June 29, 2024 — three lucky Saturdays.
On This Day In 1983: June 25, 1983, marks one of the greatest days in cricket history as India lifted the Prudential World Cup in England. It was on this day that Kapil Dev's men were crowned champions at Lord's with an unbelievable victory over heavy favourites West Indies that ushered in a new era for India and world cricket. Kapil inspired his troops to a remarkable triumph after they were given no chance by pundits and expert,s and changed the landscape for the sport in the country.
After winning the coveted title in 1975 and 1979, the West Indies were ready to add a third World Cup trophy to their rich cabinet and flex their dominant muscles. Clive Lloyd's men started in trademark fashion, unleashing their mighty four-pronged pace battery.
India had defeated the Calypso Kings during the group stage, but the pressure of a World Cup final took its toll as Kapil's men could only muster a score of 183.
Opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth emerged as his team's top scorer for the first hal,f making 38, with senior pro Mohinder Amarnath (26) and the aggressive Sandeep Patil (27) being the only other players to enter twenties. Legendary right-arm quick Andy Roberts led the pack for the opposition with figures of 3 for 32 off his 12 overs.

Set a target of just 184, the West Indies looked set to crush India's fairytale run. But in an inspired bowling display, India's steady but disciplined medium pacers turned the tables on Clive Lloyd's mighty juggernaut.
A memorable catch running backwards by Kapil helped remove the dangerous Vivian Richards after he threatened to run away with the game with his 33 off 28 and proved to be the game-changer.
Madan Lal (3/31), Balwinder Sandhu (2/32) and Mohinder Amarnath (3/12) provided critical blows and ran through the much-fancied opposition batting line-up, dismissing the West Indies for 148.
THE SATURDAYS OF GLORY
India's pathbreaking triumph gave Kapil a legacy-defining moment as he inspired a generation of players to take up the sport and to lift the World Cup for the country. It also started India's love affair with Saturdays in ICC tournaments. Saturday seems to be a lucky charm for Indian cricket when it comes to the marquee finals of global events.
28 years after Kapil lifted the coveted crown on the Lord's balcony, MS Dhoni finished off in style and unleashed nationwide celebrations with the 2011 World Cup win.
It was another special Saturday for Indian cricket at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, as Dhoni led from the front and helped India ace the final against Sri Lanka after being set a target of 275.
The Saturday charm worked its wonders yet again on June 29, 2024, when the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team defeated South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup final and broke the country's longstanding jinx at major events.
Despite Proteas needing 30 off 30 balls heading into the final half-hour of play, a special second spell from Jasprit Bumrah and a tremendous boundary catch from Suryakumar Yadav provided the turnaround before allrounder Hardik Pandya successfully defended 16 required off the last over.

Ishan Kishan Takes Off Gloves, Bowls Off-Spin And Leg-Spin For County Team In Same Over

Out-of-sorts Indian wicket-keeper batter, Ishan Kishan, was surprisingly seen bowling for his County side, Nottinghamshire. In the same over, Ishan bowled both off-spin and leg-spin, with some of the deliveries looking extremely ordinary. Ishan, who is a character that likes to enjoy himself, be it while wicket-keeping, batting, or fielding, had a smile on his face while he was bowling. Some of his deliveries, however, also left the commentators struggling to control their laughter. Ishan started the over by bowling off-spin, but later shifted to leg-spin. Ishan was roped in by Nottinghamshire as Kyle Verreynne 's replacement while the World Test Championship-winning South African is away playing a two-Test series in Zimbabwe. He will be eligible for selection for the upcoming Championship fixtures against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge and Somerset in Taunton. "I'm feeling very excited to get my first taste of playing county cricket in England, and it will be a great chance to showcase my skills. I want to make sure I am the best cricketer I can be, and playing in English conditions will really help me to learn new skills. "Trent Bridge is such a famous ground that is well-known in India and around the world, and I am really excited that I will be playing there," said Kishan. At present, Ishan isn't in the scheme of things as far as Test cricket is concerned. The wicket-keeper batter hasn't played for India in any format since November 2023.

Rs 9,999 tickets to lowering spice levels for international athletes — how Neeraj the organiser spent the last few ahead of NC Classic

That is why Saturday's event could be significant for Indian athletics. If Chopra winning gold in Tokyo was the country's athletics equivalent of the Moon Landing event, meets like the one on Saturday could help normalise it in the years to come. "There are so many international competitions in countries like Germany every week — A, B, C category events," he said. "That's what I want here in India, at least four to five world-class meets every year. Our athletes should get these opportunities and the public should watch them live. "I never thought such an event would take place. I am at peace... I'm able to give something back to India." There's also the question of legacy and competitions like these go a long way in securing it. While this event has the blessings of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) — a pre-requisite — and WA were quickly on board, Chopra's name will provide an added legitimacy to it. 2016 Olympic champ, Thomas Rohler, and 2015 World Champ, Julius Yego, may have come even otherwise but a personal invitation from Chopra sealed it. When one of the sport's big personalities calls you, you pack your bags to compete in a land you have never competed in before. That's also true for some of the companies who have sponsored the event. There's a learning partner (Duolingo), a content partner (Snapchat) as well as an outdoor partner (Mera Hoarding). It reflects the kind of trust firms have in the Chopra name that they have all come on board to sponsor an inaugural tournament.

Julius Yego believes 90m throws can be on the cards at NC Classic 2025

Bengaluru: As the Neeraj Chopra Classic gears up its first-ever edition, scheduled for Saturday, the 2016 Olympic silver medallist Julius Yego of Kenya expressed disappointment following the withdrawal of top athletes, including Grenadian star Anderson Peters and backed the strong field to shine with 90m show. Two-time world champion Peters was ruled out of the World Athletics category A javelin event due to an ankle injury just a few days before the competition, with Poland's Cyprian Mrzyglod replacing him in the lineup. Peters' withdrawal came just a day after India's Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena was ruled out of the competition due to an ankle injury. His fellow Indian javelin thrower Yash Vir Singh replaced Jena in the final entry list for the comprtition. "It's a shame that Peters was not able to be here. He is a good friend of ours. We really wanted him to compete,' Yego told IANS. 'But then, you know, your health is very important, and I wish him a quick recovery so that he comes back stronger. We made this sport very interesting." Despite Peters' absence, Yego remains upbeat about the competition's quality. "Those of us here are very good athletes. Thomas Rohler has thrown 90m, Neeraj has thrown 90m. The others too have thrown 84m or 85m. They can be able even to do 90m. Who knows, they can even do it tomorrow," he said. Yego, who learned the fundamentals of javelin by watching YouTube videos and has been trailblazing javelin's rise in Africa, signed off by highlighting the larger purpose of the event which is to promote and popularise the javelin in India. 'It's all about enjoying the sport and making javelin more popular in India,' he said. As a World Athletics-sanctioned Gold level meet, the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 becomes India's first-ever international javelin competition. The event is officially sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
