Filipino man nabbed at Kota Kinabalu Airport over fake travel pass

KOTA KINABALU: A 21-year-old Filipino man was arrested at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) for allegedly attempting to leave the country using a travel pass with forged endorsements.
The man was stopped by the Malaysian Border Control Agency (MBCA) during a routine inspection yesterday.
Authorities discovered that the man had a Social Visit Pass bearing an entry endorsement dated July 28 and an exit endorsement dated July 30.
Checks with the Immigration Department revealed that neither stamp was recorded in the system, raising suspicions of forgery.

"The suspect was detained for allegedly attempting to mislead authorities about the actual duration of his stay in Malaysia.
"Further inspection also uncovered two boarding passes in the suspect's possession — one for a flight to Kuala Lumpur on July 30, and another to Manila, Philippines, the following day," MBCA said in a statement today.
MBCA said it was investigating the purpose of holding both passes to identify the suspect's modus operandi.
The man has since been handed over to the Immigration Department's enforcement division in Kota Kinabalu for further investigation under Section 56(1)(l) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for possession or use of forged documents.
MBCA warned that it takes any attempt to forge travel documents seriously and will continue to tighten controls at all national entry points to safeguard the country's security and sovereignty.

Immigration Dept officers nab 121 undocumented migrants in Kajang, Sungai Tangkas

KAJANG: Immigration officers detained 121 undocumented migrants for various offences following a large-scale raid here and in Sungai Tangkas today. Immigration Department enforcement director Basri Othman said the joint operation, carried out in the areas surrounding Hentian Metro Kajang and Sungai Tangkas, was based on public complaints alleging that foreign workers were operating businesses or working in local shops. Those detained comprised 92 men and 29 women from Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Syria and Sudan. "Eighty-two officers were mobilised for the operation. A total of 719 individuals were checked, comprising 534 foreigners and 185 Malaysians. "Although arrests were made, several individuals fled. Follow-up action may be taken," he told reporters after the raids. Initial investigations by the department at Hentian Metro Kajang found that some detainees were still using expired Labour Recalibration Programme slips. "We advise foreigners and employers not to be deceived by agents claiming that the programme is still in effect. "The Immigration Department is currently only implementing the Migrant Repatriation Programme, which allows those who have overstayed to return to their hom e countries," Basri said. Some of the foreigners found working at a Kajang food court were employed as cooks and cashiers. "Most claimed to be employees at the premises. However, we will investigate further to determine whether they are actually workers or the business owners," said Basri. He also reminded employers that photocopies of identification documents are not sufficient during inspections, rejecting excuses such as safeguarding the documents. "A passport is the property of the individual. We advise employers that if workers are unable to carry their passports, they should at least carry the i-Kad, which has been introduced for this purpose," said Basri. On May 17, Immigration Department deputy director-general (operations) Jafri Embok Taha said the Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 had been extended to April 30 next year. The repatriation programme offers foreigners

Police: Foreigners held in hypnosis scam may be part of syndicate

KEPALA BATAS: Police are investigating whether the five Iranians detained on Saturday over a hypnosis scam targeting foreign tourists at popular city locations are also linked to similar cases in other states. Acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said police believe the suspects may be part of a syndicate specialising in theft. "Based on their modus operandi and movements, we believe they could be part of a syndicate that specialises in stealing money. "However, further investigation is underway to determine whether they are involved in similar cases in other states," he told reporters here today. He was speaking at a brief ceremony to dispose of drugs seized by the state police between 2010 and last year, worth about RM2 million. Alwi said initial investigations showed that the five entered Penang on July 27, and that police are working with the Immigration Department to determine their date of entry into Malaysia. "They had been staying at a homestay in Batu Ferringhi up until their arrests," he added. For now, Alwi said the number of identified victims remains at three "There could be more victims who have yet to come forward to lodge reports," he said. When asked whether the five are family members, Alwi said investigations are still ongoing. He added that police would also liaise with the Iranian Embassy to obtain further information about the suspects. It was reported that five Iranians, including a married couple, had been remanded for four days to assist in investigations into a hypnosis scam allegedly targeting foreign tourists. The suspects were arrested during Op Tourist, an operation launched following three separate police reports lodged between July 30 and Aug 1 involving thefts from international tourists in Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang. The victims, tourists from Taiwan, the Netherlands and Syria, aged between 29 and 52, said they were approached by individuals posing as fellow tourists or friendly locals who engaged them in casual conversation. During the interaction, the suspects allegedly persuaded the victims to show the cash they were carrying, before discreetly making off with the money.
