Govt's prerogative who replies: Nadda defends PM Modi's absence in Rajya Sabha Operation Sindoor debate
Rajya Sabha
,
JP Nadda
, countered the Opposition's criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi not replying to the debate on
Operation Sindoor
in the Upper House, as he had done in the Lok Sabha. Nadda underlined that it is the government's prerogative to decide which minister will reply to a debate, and cited a precedent from the erstwhile UPA dispensation to buttress his argument.
Making a suo motu statement in the House, Nadda said, "Yesterday, after a long discussion on Operation Sindoor, some of the Opposition members staged a walkout when the Home Minister commenced his reply. In this regard, I draw the attention of members to the proceedings of both Houses in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in December (sic) 2008."

While
Prime Minister Modi
had replied to the discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the government fielded Home Minister
Amit Shah
to do so in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. This led to protests and a walkout by the Opposition, which wanted to corner the PM on US President Donald Trump's controversial statements on ceasefire and tariffs.
Clearing the air on the issue, Nadda referred to the debate on the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.
"It is a matter of record that discussions took place in both Houses on the statement made on behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs... In the Lok Sabha, the then Home Minister, P Chidambaram, and the Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) replied to the debate... And in the Rajya Sabha, the then Minister of Home Affairs, Chidambaram, replied to the discussion," he said.
Live Events
The Leader of the House informed members that this issue had been discussed in the last Business Advisory Committee, and the Chair had made it clear there, as well as in the House, that "it is the prerogative of the Government to decide which Minister should speak and reply to the discussion in the House".
Nadda said that while the Opposition had sought a discussion on Operation Sindoor and wanted to "elicit information from the Government", when the opportunity came, they walked out instead of hearing the Home Minister.
"Therefore, the demand of the Opposition parties yesterday was clearly misplaced and displays a double standard. Given the precedent I quoted just now about the discussions in both Houses on the Mumbai terror attack," Nadda said.

Modi, Shah call separately on President Murmu
. . . 1 2 NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called on President Droupadi Murmu amid a logjam in Parliament over the opposition's demand for a discussion on the special intensive revision exercise in Bihar ahead of assembly elections in the state. Home minister Amit Shah also called on the President separately later. The Rashtrapati Bhavan posted photos of both interactions on X. Except for discussions on Operation Sindoor, Parliament has seen little business since the monsoon session began on July 21. The meetings also came days after US President Trump announced 25% tariffs on Indian exports and an unspecified penalty over Russian purchases.

'Settled a war a month': Trump again takes credit for India-Pakistan ceasefire; claims 'ending 5 wars' globally
US President Donald Trump (Image credits: AP) NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump once again on Sunday repeated his claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, along with ending several other global conflicts. In post on Truth Social, Trump responded to radio host and author Charlamagne Tha God saying the host knew 'nothing' about his achievements, including 'just ending 5 Wars, including a 31 year bloodbath between Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, where Seven Million people have died, and there was no end in sight.' Trump added, 'He didn't know that, or India and Pakistan or, wiping out Iran's nuclear capabilities, or closing the horrendous open Border, or creating the greatest economy.' Speaking to Newsmax a day earlier, Trump claimed to have 'settled a lot of wars,' including India and Pakistan. 'One of the wars—India, Pakistan, nuclear,' he said. He also cited conflicts in Thailand and Cambodia, and Congo and Rwanda, saying many were resolved through trade pressure, reported PTI. 'I said 'listen, you guys are going to fight. You can fight all you want. I mean, just fight your hearts out. But we're not doing a trade deal'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Women Ever Today's NYC Undo All of a sudden they end up not doing a war.' Trump added, 'I settled a lot of wars. I think I settled averaging about a war a month. But, you know, we're saving millions of lives.' Last week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt supported Trump's claim, saying he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. 'Trump has now ended conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia,' she said at a briefing. She claimed Trump has 'brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month' in his six months in office. Since May 10, Trump has claimed multiple times that India and Pakistan had agreed to a 'full and immediate' ceasefire after US-mediated talks. However, officials have firmly denied any US involvement in the recent ceasefire. Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Parliament that no foreign leader urged India to stop Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that killed 26 people. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said there was 'no third-party intervention' and dismissed any link between the ceasefire and trade. 'Prime Minister Modi and Trump did not have any phone calls between April 22, when the Pahalgam terror attack took place, and June 16,' Jaishankar said in the Rajya Sabha as quoted by PTI.

Himanta calls Rahul ‘traitor', slams Priyanka's proposed visit to Dhubri
Guwahati: Assam CM on Sunday called the Lok Sabha's leader of opposition, , a 'traitor', alleging that the Congress leader was siding with Bangladeshi and Pakistani Muslims. Speaking on the sidelines of a campaign rally, ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council election, in lower Assam's Tamulpur, Sarma said, "Rahul Gandhi is an anti-India person. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He is only with Bangladeshi and Pakistani Muslims, not with Indian Hindus and Indian Muslims. He is a pakka deshdrohi (traitor)." Sarma's comments came on the back of queries put forward to the CM after reports emerged that Rahul and were likely to visit Assam. While Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi said Rahul and Priyanka's visit would soon materialise, with the latter keen on visiting lower Assam's Dhubri district, Sarma launched a scathing attack on Priyanka, saying that even women from self-help groups (SHG) were more advanced than her. "I don't have any objection to Priyanka Gandhi coming to Assam. But our women from self-help groups are a hundred times more advanced than Priyanka Gandhi. Our women, especially those working with SHGs, will defeat Priyanka Gandhi in every sphere. She won't even be in the contest," Sarma said. The CM added that Assamese women were far more advanced and were experts in preparing traditional delicacies like laroo and pitha, and transplanting paddy, besides taking care of the education of their children. Sarma also took a dig at Priyanka, questioning her intent to visit Dhubri. "People of a particular religion attract the . They think Assam means Dhubri. I have no problem with their Dhubri visit, but any person, who's coming to Assam, should first say that he or she will come to Kamakhya, Batadrava, Charaideo Moidams and Rangghar," Sarma said. "Congress only recognises a section of the religious minority in Dhubri. They do not understand the love of any other people," he added. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Earlier in the day, Gogoi said several senior national leaders will visit Assam from time to time and interact with the people, as part of their bigger strategy, ahead of the 2026 assembly polls. "Priyanka Gandhi has informed us that she wants to visit Assam and meet the people. Last time, she went to Dhubri and promised people there that she will come again, if Congress wins (in the Lok Sabha election)," Gogoi added. While Congress managed to win three out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, Congress's Rakibul Hussain won in Dhubri by a huge margin of over 10 lakh votes.
