KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia have updated their flight booking name entry rules to align with international standards and reduce check-in issues, especially for passengers with non-standard name formats.
Both airlines now require passengers to enter their full names exactly as they appear in official documents, such as passports or national ID cards, to prevent discrepancies during check-in, according to a report published in The Star today.
For example, a passenger named Ahmad Faliq bin Hamedi should input 'Ahmad Faliq' under the 'First and Middle Name' field and 'Bin Hamedi' in the 'Last Name/Surname' field.
Malaysia Airlines has published detailed booking guidelines on its website to assist passengers with the revised procedures.
AirAsia has also adopted a clearer distinction between 'Given Name' and 'Family Name/Surname' to accommodate naming conventions across various cultures including Malaysian, Chinese, Indian, Thai, and Vietnamese.
The airline emphasised that symbols and special characters are not accepted and name length is restricted by system limits.
'For names with '@', replace it with a space; for names with 'A/P' or 'A/L', omit them unless stated in your passport,' AirAsia advised.
Hyphens in names should also be replaced with spaces.
Passengers are not allowed to change the name on a booking to another person after confirmation, but corrections for minor errors or misspellings are permitted.
Some travellers have expressed concerns, including businesswoman Faridah Joned, who is unsure if she needs to update her existing Malaysia Airlines booking due to not including 'binti.'
An AirAsia passenger, known only as Tan, said the update should be better communicated, suggesting that airlines should email passengers about such changes.
Travellers are encouraged to check the respective airline websites or customer service channels for more information.

Employees were also instructed to update their residential addresses to avoid potential disciplinary action, while another message encouraged officers to 'share their pinned location' if they were not at home. A warning within the messages noted that 'any non-compliance identified may result in disciplinary action, which could include termination'. In response to Channel News Asia's queries, Certis said yesterday that termination is not automatic and disciplinary steps are taken only in 'clear and substantiated cases of abuse of medical leave, after a fair and thorough process'. 'We do not terminate employees solely because employees are not at home when on medical leave,' the company reportedly said. It added that managers may check in on staff who are on medical leave — particularly those on extended leave — and that these visits may include 'small care gestures'. Certis also emphasised that it trusts the majority of its staff to use medical leave responsibly, but has put in safeguards to ensure the system is not abused. 'Certis holds our officers to high standards of professionalism and integrity,' the company said. 'We take a firm stance against any wilful breach of company policy and will not hesitate to take disciplinary action where warranted, as we fulfil our commitment towards partners, customers, and the community whom we strive to protect and safeguard.'

KOTA BARU, June 29 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has found that 64 per cent of commercial vehicle operators audited during the Special Operation on Safety Audit System Guidelines (Ops Khas JISA) failed to meet mandatory safety requirements. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the nationwide operation, which began on June 23, involved audits on 133 companies operating commercial vehicles. Of these, 85 companies failed to comply with JISA guidelines, while only 48 passed. 'The non-compliant companies comprised 43 lorry operators and 42 tour and express bus operators,' he said after attending JPJ's Setia Khas Assembly here today. Among the key violations were the failure to appoint occupational safety and health officers, lack of GPS installation in all vehicles, and poor GPS monitoring practices. Many companies also failed to record drivers' working hours, which must not exceed eight hours a day, and did not ensure a minimum 30-minute break every four hours of driving. He added that some companies had no safety action plans in place and did not display hotline numbers or the names of responsible officers on their vehicles for public complaints. LABUAN, June 29 — The Labuan-Kota Kinabalu express ferry service has seen a surge in passengers since resuming operations on May 27, following a three-year suspension. To date, more than 3,700 commuters have used the direct sea route, with each trip operating at full capacity of over 100 passengers. The revival of the service, linking the duty-free island to Sabah's capital, has been hailed by federal authorities as a much-needed boost to regional connectivity. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa described the ferry's return as a key development for Labuan's socio-economic growth. 'This express ferry is not just a transportation service – it is a vital connector for regional economic, social and development networks,' she said. Speaking to reporters at the Labuan International Ferry Terminal after welcoming passengers from Kota Kinabalu, Dr Zaliha said the service facilitates community mobility, daily activities, and the transport of goods within local supply chains. She expressed satisfaction with the strong public reception, noting that the ferry is popular among a wide range of travellers commuting between the two cities. 'This route offers a more convenient and time-saving alternative to the roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry via Menumbok, especially for passengers without vehicles,' she said.
