with 1700 screens gears up to open 100 new screens in FY26, including a significant push in South India, Bijli outlines a strategy focused on regional expansion, experience-led engagement, and adapting to changing consumption patterns.

"The real challenge isn't pricing, it's time. Today, consumers have more entertainment options than ever. We're competing not just for their money, but for their time," said Bijli.
On the perception that high ticket prices deter moviegoers, Bijli responded, 'This argument comes up often, but I don't think pricing is a deterrent. Our average ticket price is around Rs 250 to 260, which is very reasonable for the experience we offer. Compared to global pricing, $10 or more in the US, we're very affordable at around $3.'
'If price were a real issue, films like Chhaava, Mission: Impossible, Avatar, Pushpa, and Kalki 2898 AD wouldn't become blockbusters. People wouldn't turn up and make these Rs 500 to 600 crore hits. It's all about content. If the content resonates, as it did with Stree 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Singham, and others, audiences will come regardless of price.'
For FY26, PVR INOX is planning a total investment of around Rs 300 crore. 'Our capex on new properties this year will be just over Rs 200 crore, with an additional Rs 100 crore allocated for renovations and investments in IT and technology. Continuous upgrades are essential for operating a large national circuit like ours,' Bijli said.
Of the 100 new screens planned for FY26, 40% will be in South India, particularly Hyderabad and Bangalore, as the region continues to drive significant growth for PVR INOX.
'We're opening a four-screen cinema at SMR Vinay Mall in Hyderabad, taking our total to 24 screens opened this year,' said Bijli. 'We're on track to meet our target of adding 100 screens in FY26. Of these, 40 will be in South India, particularly Hyderabad and Bangalore, which accounts for about 40% of our total expansion. So, the South continues to contribute significantly to our growth.'
Explaining the momentum in the southern market, he said, 'The South is rapidly catching up in terms of mall development. Earlier, regions like the North and West, Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune were ahead, and the South was a few years behind. But now, the South has caught up.'
'Developers like Inorbit, Prestige, and Lake Shore, who've been long-standing partners of ours, are building high-quality malls, and we're their preferred cinema partner. These strong relationships and the pace of development are driving our expansion in the region.'
On whether this aggressive expansion risks skewing the balance between screen count and revenue contribution, Bijli said that is already the case. "Currently, South India contributes about 40% of our screen count. And it's not just a skew in screens, revenues are also higher in the South than in any other region.'
'So, it makes sense to continue expanding there, not indiscriminately, but in specific catchments where there's demand. These are the markets we're focusing on, not just in the South, but across the country. That said, the South remains a priority because of strong developments, untapped markets, and a consistent appetite for cinema.'
Contrary to the perception that Hindi-speaking markets are lagging, Bijli offered a more optimistic view. 'We've had a good first quarter (Q1 FY26). Films like Sitaare Zameen Par and Raid 2 in May performed very well. Housefull 5 also delivered strong numbers. Even Maa, the horror film starring Kajol, has done well. Bhool Chuk Maaf performed strongly toward the end of May. So, we've seen solid success in the Hindi belt too.'
Looking at year-on-year trends, Bijli said, 'We've done better. About 33.5 million people visited our cinemas in Q1 this year, compared to 30 million last year. That's a healthy increase of around 10 to 11%.'
He emphasised that a quality experience is central to drawing audiences. 'For us, everything starts with the product. If the product is strong, people will come. That means ensuring excellent sound, projection, technology, and seat comfort. Then comes food and beverage quality, customer service, air conditioning, all of which contribute to a smooth, pleasant experience. If guests spend three hours with us, we want it to be completely frictionless and enjoyable, so they want to return.'
To supplement this, PVR INOX has stepped up marketing efforts. 'Our Blockbuster Tuesday offer, Rs 99 tickets, has doubled Tuesday admissions from 2 lakh to 4.5 lakh. We have app download offers with Rs 100 discounts, bottomless F&B refills on Fridays, and more. These are just a few examples of the creative campaigns our marketing team rolls out to drive footfalls.'
With half of its new screens to be developed under the
FOCO model
, Bijli sees this as a strategic adaptation. 'About 50% of them will follow the FOCO model. We're fortunate to have developer partners who believe in our brand and are excited to work with us under this structure.'
He dismissed the idea that this shift signals the decline of the traditional multiplex model. 'I don't agree. While there has been some change in consumer behaviour, it's not a paradigm shift. In FY25, we had 130 million visitors to our cinemas, a number that clearly shows people are still coming out for the big screen experience.'
'Yes, there's been a slight dip, maybe 10%, and we're adapting to that. One way is by exploring models like FOCO, where we share capital expenditure with developers.'
Highlighting the role of multiplexes in driving traffic to malls, he added, 'Multiplexes are often located on the top floors of malls and act as major footfall drivers. When a big film releases, like Chhaava or Sitaare Zameen Par, the entire mall benefits. Restaurants, cafes, and retail all see a bump.'
'Developers recognise this value, which is why many are willing to contribute to the multiplex CapEx. It's not a new concept. This model has been widely used in the West for years. Even in India, brands like McDonald's have followed this approach, often relying on developer-funded CapEx. We're simply applying similar principles to adapt to the evolving market.'

Investment management firm Invesco on Wednesday divested more than 2 crore shares of real estate firm Oberoi Realty and Lodha Developers for a total of Rs 3,202 crore through open market transactions. The US-based investment firm through its affiliate Invesco Developing Markets Fund offloaded a little over 1 crore equity shares or 2.95 per cent stake in Oberoi Realty, bulk deal data on the BSE showed. The company sold shares at Rs 1,754.26 apiece, taking the deal value to around Rs 1,883.21 crore. As of the June quarter, Invesco Developing Markets Fund owned a 3.01 per cent stake in Oberoi Realty. In a separate bulk deal on the NSE, Invesco Developing Markets Fund sold 95.25 lakh shares or nearly 1 per cent stake in Mumbai-based Lodha Developers. Shares were disposed of at Rs 1,384.93 apiece, taking the total value to Rs 1,319.24 crore. Meanwhile, SBI Mutual Fund bought 40.94 lakh shares or 1.13 per cent equity stake in Oberoi Realty for Rs 718.18 crore. The shares were acquired at an average price of Rs 1,754.10 per piece on the BSE. Details of the other buyers of Oberoi Realty's shares could not be ascertained on the BSE. Also, details of the buyers of Lodha Developers' shares could not be identified on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Shares of Lodha Developers (Macrotech) plunged 7.65 per cent to close at Rs 1,332 apiece on the NSE while the scrip of Oberoi Realty fell 3.23 per cent to close at Rs 1,766.60 apiece on the BSE. On Monday, Oberoi Realty reported a 28 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit to Rs 421.25 crore for the quarter ended in June on lower income. The net profit stood at Rs 584.51 crore in the year-ago period. Its total income fell to Rs 1,073.98 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal from Rs 1,441.95 crore in the corresponding period of the preceding year. On the operational front, the company has sold properties worth Rs 1,639 crore in the April-June quarter of 2025-26 fiscal.

The European Union has imposed a ban on the import of Russian oil from third countries which means no EU nation can now import Russian-origin crude or refined products irrespective of where it is processed or shipped from. This move can impact India, which was exporting around $15 billion of refined petroleum products annually to European markets. With this new restriction, that entire revenue stream is now at risk. EU's Move Hits India Hard In recent weeks, former U.S. President Donald Trump had made statements of curbing trade in Russian oil, but they had little impact on countries like India and China. However, the EU's latest decision has given a serious blow to Mukesh Ambani. On Monday, after the EU's announcement, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) shares declined over 3%, wiping out more than Rs 66,000 crore in market capitalisation. The new EU rule bans the import of Russian oil, even if it is refined in a third country like India. This directly affects companies like Reliance Industries, one of India's largest exporters of refined crude oil products to Europe. India's Oil Trade With Russia and Europe According to reports, India exported $19.2 billion worth of petroleum products to the EU in FY24. However, in FY25, this number dropped by 27.1% to $15 billion, after growing scrutiny over the origin of crude used. At the same time, India imported $50.3 billion of crude oil from Russia in FY25, so Russian oil now accounts for over 44% of India's total crude basket. Big Blow To Reliance Industries The impact can be seen on Reliance Industries, which has become the largest importer of Russian crude oil. In December 2024, RIL signed a 10-year deal with Russia's Rosneft to import around 500,000 barrels per day of Russian crude at around $13 billion annually. This move helped RIL to refine the cheaper Russian crude and export the high-margin products, especially diesel, to Europe. As of October 2024, Reliance was importing an average of 405,000 barrels per day from Russia which was over one-third of its total crude oil intake. With Russian crude priced $3–4 per barrel cheaper than Middle Eastern grades, RIL had been benefiting from healthy refining margins and strong demand in European markets. But the EU's ban has now threatens this business model. Reliance Industries Lost 66,000 Crore After the EU's decision, Reliance shares fell sharply. On the BSE, RIL stock closed at Rs 1,428.20, down 3.29% from the previous close. During the session, it hit a day's low of Rs 1,423.05. The stock had opened at Rs 1,474.95, slightly below its previous close of Rs 1,476.85. The decline resulted in a massive hit to Reliance's market capitalisation. On Friday, the company's market cap was at Rs 19,98,543.22 crore. By the end of Monday's trading session, it had fallen to Rs 19,32,707.74 crore which was a drop of Rs 65,835.48 crore in a single day.

Agency: New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) The number of publications registered with the Press Registrar General of India has increased from 1.05 lakh in 2014-15 to 1.55 lakh in 2024-25, Union Minister L Murugan said on Wednesday. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Murugan said India has a vibrant press and media ecosystem, which has witnessed growth in recent years. He said the number of private satellite TV Channels have also increased from 821 in 2014-15 to 908 in 2024-25. 'As of today, 92 private channels and 50 Doordarshan Channels are available on DD Free Dish. Both private and DD channels operate in various regional languages, ensuring wider audience reach across the country," Murugan said. In reply to a separate question, Murugan said the government has undertaken measures for the modernisation and expansion of Akashvani and Doordarshan Kendras (DDK) across all the states. The Kendras are being upgraded under the Central Sector Scheme, Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND). This includes major upgrades throughout the country, including Bihar, to strengthen public broadcasting, he said. 'The scheme has been approved with a total outlay of Rs 2,539.61 crore for the period 2021-26," the minister said.
