Ethan Ives-Griffiths' grandmother 'regrets' how husband treated toddler, murder trial hears
Giving evidence at Mold Crown Court on Wednesday, she was asked by Owen Edwards KC, defending: 'Did you assault Ethan on August 14?' She replied: 'No.'
Kerry Ives also denied seeing, helping with or encouraging an assault on that date. The grandmother, who wiped her eyes with a tissue at points during her evidence, described Ethan as a 'bubbly little child' and said he came to stay at their home in Garden City from about June 24, 2021 for a few weeks, before going back to his mother – her daughter, Shannon Ives.

After Mr Edwards asked in what circumstances that would happen, Kerry said: 'He'd probably p****d her off, just by laughing at her if she told him off.' She said on August 14 she noticed a red mark on Ethan's face after he had been in the bedroom with his mother.
Kerry said she did not see Shannon hit Ethan that day, but was later reminded of her defence statement in which she said she saw Shannon strike her son to his head as they walked to the living room.
She told the court she was in the living room with her husband that evening, while Shannon was upstairs, when she turned and saw Michael Ives catching Ethan.
Kerry said: 'Michael picked him back up and then he did it again so Michael lay him on the carpet.' Asked how it looked, she said: 'It was horrible.'
She said she shouted for Shannon, who came down from upstairs and later called her other daughter, Nicole, over Facetime, the court heard. The accused said: 'Nicole had gone through something similar with her son. I just needed some advice for what to do.'
She then rang an ambulance, but the court heard the time between Kerry shouting for her daughter to come downstairs and phoning emergency services was 18 minutes. Kerry said: 'I was panicking. I didn't know what was going on.'
Kerry, originally from Wolverhampton, accepted the way her husband carried Ethan, by his arm, in CCTV footage from August 4, 2021, was 'cruel'. She said: 'It wasn't nice.'
Kerry said at the time she did not see her husband holding Ethan in that way and denied the footage showed her watching as Ethan was carried from a trampoline in the back garden. She said: 'I was just staring, that's what I usually do, just stare and glaze.'
Asked what she would have done if she had seen her husband carrying the toddler like that, she said: 'I'd have told him to pack it in.' She accepted she did see him lift Ethan over a railing by his arm in later footage which was shown to the court.
Gordon Cole KC, defending Shannon Ives, said: 'Do you regret how Michael treated Ethan?' She said: 'Yes.'
When Mr Cole asked why she had not initially told the jury she had seen her husband carry Ethan like that, she said: 'I can't answer.' She added: 'I'm not protecting him.'
Michael and Kerry Ives, of Kingsley Road, Garden City, deny murder, an alternative count of causing or allowing the death of a child, and cruelty to a person under 16.

A woman has revealed how she was forced to escape from an Uber onto a busy highway after her driver pulled out a knife while behind the wheel. In shocking footage shared by TikTok user @xkhatkhu, the driver was seen menacingly twirling what appeared to be a flick knife as he drove. The incident is believed to have unfolded in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the video uploaded last week. In the clip, the shaking female passenger films as the driver whips out the blade and begins toying with it ominously for around a minute. Four-year-old boy and mum suffer 'significant' injuries in 'vicious' dog attack
Alexander Jones, 27, said that he kept the dog for his own protection with the judge at Caernarfon Crown Court acknowledging his 'vulnerabilities' after falling prey to criminals A dangerous dog was put down after a "vicious" attack on a four-year-old boy and his mum in Llandudno. Alexander Jones, 27, was sentenced today at Caernarfon Crown Court after his Belgian Malinois bit the young child and then the woman as she tried to protect her son. Judge Nicola Jones condemned the attack as "vicious" but took into account Jones' own "vulnerabilities". The incident occurred near Llandudno town centre at 3.15pm on March 5 last year, where the two victims were confronted by the aggressive dog. In a desperate attempt to save her son, the mother was bitten while fending off the animal with a drinks bottle until help arrived, reports North Wales Live. Jones claimed he kept the dog "for his own protection" but consented to its destruction following the incident. The judge highlighted the "significant" injuries suffered by the victims, noting that the pain endured by both lasted up to eight weeks. Referencing previous run-ins with the dog in August and November 2023, she acknowledged Jones's vulnerability. He had fallen prey to a criminal gang and was "cuckooed" at his former residence. A court order prevents the reporting of his current address. Suffering from notable mental health issues, he requires support for daily life and routine tasks, as pointed out by the judge. Addressing the defendant, Judge Jones remarked: "If you did not have several vulnerabilities which led you to get the dog in the first place I would have sent you straight to prison." Emphasising the severity of his mental health challenges, she added: "But your mental health difficulties are so considerable that I believe you had grave difficulties - given the fact you need assistance with your daily living issues - that you were not capable from the outset of controlling this animal." She recalled that when asked whether the dog should be euthanised following the attack, he immediately agreed, signing the document to permit the destruction of the pet. In lieu of custody, she imposed a 16-month jail term suspended for 18 months. Jones was also ordered to participate in 10 days of rehabilitative activities, sign up for a six-month drug rehabilitation scheme due to cannabis use and engage in a year-long mental health treatment programme. Furthermore, Jones is now prohibited from supervising any dog for the remainder of his life. In her statement, Judge Jones lauded the "superb and brave" efforts of the police officers involved. One officer was also assaulted during the episode but they escaped uninjured.
