Farmer swept away, 256 rescued, 27 roads shut as Gadchiroli fights floods
Nagpur: Heavy rains in Gadchiroli over the last three days has led to severe flooding, submerging several villages, leaving hundreds stranded, and severing vital transport links. A 46-year-old farmer, Raju Vishwanath Tumram from Khurja Deshpur in Armori taluka, was swept away in a swollen nullah on Tuesday. Overflowing rivers and nullahs like Pal Nadi and Gadhavi Nadi blocked 27 roads, including National Highway 353C (Gadchiroli-Armori-Chamorshi) and State Highway 377 (Kurkheda-Vairagad). The India Meteorological Department has issued heavy rainfall alert for the next 24 hours, raising fears about worsening flood situation. The district administration led by collector Avishyant Panda is mobilising all resources as rivers like Wainganga and Godavari breached danger levels, isolating entire communities. Over 250 people, including 33 pregnant women who were close to their delivery date, have been rescued from raging floodwaters. In Desaiganj taluka, 16 residents from Sawangi and 35 from Virshi Tukum villages were evacuated to the zilla parishad school and Shiv Mandir, respectively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In Gadchiroli taluka, 132 workers from Kotgal barrage found safety in private shelters. In Armori's Thanegaon, 73 passengers from two stranded buses were rescued and sheltered at the gram panchayat. Submerged bridges and waterlogged stretches have cut off dozens of villages in talukas like Armori, Kurkheda, Desaiganj, and Chamorshi, from the district headquarters. The administration has implemented robust mitigation measures like barricading flooded roads, equipping shelter homes with rations and medicines, with priority given to vulnerable groups like pregnant women. Due to heavy discharge from Gosikhurd dam and Chichdoh barrage — 5.29 lakh cusecs and 6.33 lakh cusecs respectively — residents near riverbanks have been warned to stay alert and avoid taking selfies near floodwaters. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are deployed for rescue operations, and heavy machinery is clearing blocked routes. The administration's swift action, combined with community resilience, is mitigating the impact of the deluge.

The delay proved tragic as another canine accident victim on Wednesday could not receive timely assistance and succumbed to injuries because the rescue vehicle arrived late due to traffic bottlenecks. Another commuter, Shubhangi Kale, who was travelling from Vimannagar to Model Colony, described her ordeal: "I left Vimannagar during evening hours for my residence in Model Colony. " Another commuter Geetanjali Bhave took 25 minutes to reach her Vimannagar home from Jay Prakash Nagar due to traffic en route. "Once I entered Vimannagar, I was stuck near Dorabjee for 10 minutes. Trees at Aundh and Anandnagar on Sinhagad Road fell on the roads blocking the vehicular movement. Fire brigade officials reached the spot, cut the trees and cleared the road. Vehicular movement was slow after waterlogging was reported from Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, Bajirao Road, Lal Bahadur Shashtri Road, Sinhagad Road and old Pune-Mumbai highway. The traffic police cleared the snarls within an hour Meteorological authorities indicated that the rainfall intensity remained within light to moderate categories. The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued very light to light precipitation for the upcoming days across the city.
