Solar shift: Transforming the energy landscape

In deserts, on rooftops, floating on reservoirs and soon even stitched into our clothes — solar power is no longer just about traditional panels. In 2025, a wave of innovation is turning sunlight into energy with unprecedented efficiency and creativity. And it's happening at a scale that could redefine how nations power homes, cities and industries.
One of the most exciting breakthroughs is the rise of perovskite solar cells. Once considered too unstable for everyday use, perovskites are now outperforming expectations, with laboratory efficiencies exceeding 25 per cent.
In January 2025, the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) confirmed new tandem cell designs that combine perovskite and silicon layers, demonstrating higher energy yields and improved stability. By mid-2025, a new world record was certified: 34.85 per cent efficiency in a tandem perovskite-silicon cell — underscoring the technology's rapid evolution.
These next-generation modules are thin, flexible and can even be printed onto glass or fabric; opening doors to solar-powered windows, wearables and vehicles.
Japanese companies have already begun mass-producing ultra-thin perovskite sheets for commercial applications.
According to a report by EA Global, the technology is expected to move from pilot-scale to widespread deployment within the next two years. Meanwhile, industry leaders like Hanwha and Trina Solar are racing to commercialise tandem panels that offer higher output with lower material costs.
Another innovation changing the solar landscape is bifacial panel design. These solar modules generate power on both the front and back sides; capturing reflected sunlight from the ground or surrounding surfaces.
Once considered too unstable for everyday use, perovskites are now outperforming expectations, with laboratory efficiencies exceeding 25 per cent.
In combination with sun-tracking mounts and vertical installation, bifacial panels can boost energy output by up to 30 per cent. Greenlancer, a US-based solar platform, highlights the growing use of such systems in desert and high-reflectivity environments.
Floating solar farms, also known as floatovoltaics, are also gaining momentum; with the installation of solar arrays on reservoirs and canals not only conserving land, but also benefitting from natural cooling effects that improve efficiency.
According to a report by global market research firm IMARC Group, floating solar installations could grow by more than 20 per cent annually across Asia and the Middle East, particularly in water-scarce nations like Oman.
Solar design is also evolving to blend seamlessly with architecture. Building-integrated photovoltaics, or BIPV, now allow solar modules to be incorporated into facades, roof tiles and even windows.
Several Gulf cities are exploring BIPV for high-rise developments, where solar glass can reduce energy use without compromising design.
Under the surface, materials science is advancing rapidly. Nanocoatings are improving panel durability and reducing glare, while new solar modules come equipped with artificial intelligence and sensor technology.
These 'smart panels' can adapt in real time to optimise energy yield and detect issues before they become problems.
Looking further ahead, researchers are developing energy-harvesting fabrics and quantum dot solar cells. While these technologies remain in the experimental phase, they hold promise for lightweight, portable power ideal for off-grid areas, emergency response and even consumer clothing. As reported in the Encyclopedia of Solar Materials, textile-based solar could soon transform tents, bags and uniforms into self-sustaining energy sources.
This burst of innovation comes at a pivotal time. As demand for electricity soars — driven by data centres, electric transport and desalination — solar is emerging as one of the most scalable, fast-deploying and increasingly affordable solutions.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the cost of utility-scale solar power has dropped by over 80 per cent in the last decade, making it the cheapest source of new electricity in many parts of the world -even without subsidies.
For the Gulf region, the implications are enormous. Oman is ramping up investments in solar-powered green hydrogen, aiming to become a regional leader in clean energy exports and decarbonisation.
The Columbia Energy Policy Institute notes that countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia are also deploying some of the world's largest solar farms. These advances don't just serve climate goals — they promise long-term energy security in a rapidly warming world.
From the shaded rooftops of Muscat to smart-integrated solar facades in Dubai and Riyadh, solar is steadily reshaping the energy equation. Its strength lies not just in its efficiency, but in its adaptability. As countries look to secure their energy future, the sun is no longer a distant source of potential — it's part of the plan.

Muscat – OQ Alternative Energy has signed a joint development agreement with Naqaa Sustainable Energy Company to invest in wind energy projects in Duqm in Al Wusta and Mahout and Sadah in Dhofar. The projects are expected to generate up to 1,100 megawatt of electricity using wind turbines manufactured locally by Mawarid Turbine Company. The agreement is part of efforts by OQ Group to support the clean energy transition by developing an integrated value chain and encouraging the growth of national industries. It also aims to support emerging businesses involved in renewable energy, according to an OQ statement. The deal was signed by Said al Masoudi, Chairman of OQ Alternative Energy, and Mustafa bin Mohamed al Hinai, CEO of Naqaa Sustainable Energy Company. The signing took place in the presence of H E Salem bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals. Masoudi said the agreement reflects the government's policy of promoting renewable energy and supporting sustainable development goals. He added that OQ plays a key role as a national investment arm in the energy transition, contributing to electricity grid stability and development of clean energy infrastructure. Hinai said the partnership aligns with national efforts to diversify energy sources and utilise Oman's natural wind resources. In April, OQ Group signed a memorandum of understanding with Mawarid Turbine to establish a manufacturing facility in Special Economic Zone at Duqm. The first phase of the factory will have production capacity of up to 1,000MW a year, with investment exceeding US$200mn. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in 2026. The plant is expected to be the first of its kind in the region and will support localisation of renewable energy technologies. It is projected to generate more than 1,000 jobs. Mawarid Turbine has partnered with Shanghai Electric Wind Power Group for technology licensing, research and development, and the technical design of manufacturing systems. The collaboration will also provide wind turbines for several pilot farms.

SALALAH: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, has signed a usufruct contract for a major agricultural investment project in the Wilayat of Thamrait, Dhofar Governorate. The initiative involves the cultivation of Moringa trees over an expansive area of 10.5 million square metres in Hanfit, with a total investment value exceeding RO 5.3 million. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of HH Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar; Dr Khalfan bin Said al Shueili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning; Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources; and representatives from Trufud, the company tasked with implementing the project. This large-scale agricultural venture aims to integrate agriculture with processing industries and global supply chains, representing a new direction in sustainable agribusiness development in Oman. It aligns with national efforts to enhance food security while fostering environmentally responsible investments. Expected to yield annual revenues of RO 4 to 5 million through the export of Moringa-based products, the project will target high-demand international markets, including North America, Europe and Asia. In addition to its commercial potential, the initiative will create over 500 direct employment opportunities, along with numerous indirect jobs in supply, packaging and logistics. These prospects are set to stimulate local entrepreneurship and contribute to socio-economic development in the Dhofar Governorate. Environmental sustainability is also at the core of the project, with plans to plant around 15 million Moringa trees. This plantation is projected to absorb more than 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, significantly supporting Oman's climate mitigation strategies and the goals of Oman Vision 2040. India can capture textile exports share of Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia amid US tariffs: SBI

New Delh i: India could see a significant boost in its apparel exports to the United States amid ongoing tariff tensions involving key Asian exporters, according to a recent report by the State Bank of India (SBI). The report highlighted that India, which currently holds a 6 per cent share in the US apparel imports market, stands to benefit if it captures an additional 5 per cent share from competing countries. This potential gain could translate into a 0.1 per cent addition to India's GDP. The report noted that apart from its strong position in chemicals, India has a Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) in textiles and exports apparel and accessories to the United States. However, it faces stiff competition from countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Vietnam in this segment. Of these, Vietnam currently enjoys a more favorable tariff structure. The report stated that for the other countries, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Indonesia, the current US tariff structure places them at a disadvantage compared to India. It stated "India can capture apparel exports share of Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia". The analysis is supported by US import data from 2024. The top five items the US imports from Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Indonesia prominently include "Apparel & Accessories," with Bangladesh contributing a massive 88.2 per cent of its US exports in this category, Cambodia at 30.8 per cent, and Indonesia at 15.3 per cent. These countries are now likely to face higher tariffs from the US, opening up a window of opportunity for India to expand its footprint. In addition to apparel, SBI's report identified further export growth potential for India in other sectors, particularly in countries affected by US tariff changes. These include agricultural goods, livestock and its products, waste and scrap, especially metal scrap, and various processed animal and vegetable products. The report concluded that India should actively leverage this trade shift and strengthen its export presence, especially in categories where it holds a comparative advantage. By capitalizing on emerging opportunities amid changing global trade dynamics, India can not only boost its exports but also drive incremental growth in its economy.
