Two militants arrested in Manipur, firearms recovered
'Security forces have arrested two members of proscribed outfits in Manipur and recovered firearms from their possession,' police said on Thursday (June 26, 2025.)
'One active cadre of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) was apprehended on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) from one of the floating huts in the Loktak Lake in Bishnupur district,' a senior officer said. 'One 9 mm pistol and ammunition were recovered from his possession,' he said.
"The floating huts on the lake were used as a makeshift transit camp and hideout by militants," the officer said, adding that several household items which were used by cadres of outlawed organisations were recovered and the huts were dismantled.
'In a follow-up action, arms and ammunition were recovered from the Nachou Awang Leikai area in the district,' the police said.
'One active cadre of the banned United National Liberation Front (P) was also arrested from his Soibam Leikai residence in Imphal East district. Two 9 mm pistols and ammunition were also recovered from his possession,' ,' the officer said.

'Overall, the law and order situation in the State was normal,' the police said. 'Security forces have been continuing search operations and area domination exercises in the fringe and vulnerable areas across districts,' the officer said.
These operations have been conducted in Manipur since ethnic violence broke out two years ago. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.
The Centre had on February 13 imposed the President's rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned. The State Assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.

BJP working hard to bring back elected govt in Manipur: Biren Singh
IMPHAL: Former Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh said on Friday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is doing everything it can to restore peace and bring back a 'popular government' in the northeastern state. Our only aim is to end the crisis and bring peace to the state,' he told the media after attending a BJP meeting at Thambal Sanglen in Imphal, chaired by state BJP president A. Sarda Devi. He said the law and order situation has improved and no gunfights have been reported in the last eight or nine months. He praised Union home minister Amit Shah for working day and night to help bring back normal life. Biren also spoke about the serious problems caused by illegal immigration and drug trafficking. 'People are now beginning to understand how dangerous illegal immigrants and drugs are for Manipur and the Northeast,' he said. He added that the BJP has been asking the Centre to speed up the process of forming a new government. 'We want a government that truly represents the will of the people,' he said. BJP Manipur president A. Sarda Devi said the party has already informed central leaders about the people's strong wish to have an elected government. 'The Centre will take the required constitutional steps soon,' she said. When asked about unity within the party, Sarda said, 'Only time will tell. But we believe slow and steady wins the race.' She said that this is not the right time for political competition. 'Elections are not the priority right now. What matters most is peace and stability. We must act according to what the people want,' she added. Speaking on Sambhidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day), Sarda blamed the Congress for the Emergency declared on June 25, 1975. She said during that time, civil rights were taken away, opposition leaders were jailed, and the media was silenced. She explained that the BJP was not yet formed during the Emergency. It was the Bharatiya Jana Sangh that fought against the authoritarian rule. 'People now accuse the BJP of targeting the media, but back then, journalists were arrested and real press freedom was crushed,' she said. Sarda said peace, unity, and responsible governance are the BJP's main goals in Manipur. The party is working hard to bring back an elected government. When asked whether a new government could be formed before the six-month President's Rule ends, she said 'development will be seen,' but gave no clear answer. President's Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13 after N. Biren Singh resigned as chief minister. Since then, the state assembly has been kept under suspended animation due to ongoing violence and political instability.

Efforts underway to form popular government in Manipur: Biren Singh
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday (June 28, 2025) said efforts are underway for setting up of a popular government in the State which is now under President's rule. Speaking at the sidelines of a programme at BJP State headquarters, Mr. Singh expressed hope that a new government will be formed in Manipur soon. "We are working to form a government at the earliest. We are a national party. After looking into the ground situation, I have faith that a government will be formed soon. BJP and its allies want a popular government as well. We are working for restoration of popular government," he said. "We, BJP, haven't criticised anybody. We are concentrating only on the present crisis. We are approaching the Central government and concerned persons to bring an amicable solution and peace in the State. In the meantime, we are also working to restore a popular government with frequent gatherings of MLAs. Everybody wants the restoration of peace. Peace is compulsory. In the last seven or eight months, there have been no reports of fighting between communities," the former CM said. Mr. Singh said the Central government is working day and night to restore peace in the State. To a media query, Mr. Singh said, "I have said earlier that illegal immigrants and drug cartels have affected the entire Northeast as well as the whole nation.
