Awareness campaign launched to eliminate child marriage in Chamarajanagar district
Under the campaign, the administration is involving prominent personalities including film actors, sportspersons, and community leaders to draw public support.
As part of the initiative, a mega walkathon and pledge-taking ceremony will be held on Friday, starting at 8 a.m. from Sri Chamarajeshwara Temple.
The event will feature World Cup kho-kho player Chaitra, actor Ganesh Rao from Hondarabalu village, eight State-level athletes, Venkatesh, a member of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, as well as students, senior government officials, volunteers, and representatives from various NGOs.
The walkathon route will pass through Pachappa Circle, Santhemarahalli Circle, and the KSRTC Bus Stand, concluding at the Tourist Bungalow.
All 130 Gram Panchayats in the district have been instructed to actively participate in the drive to end child marriage.
Grassroots-level activities such as Children's Gram Sabhas, and initiatives through the School Development Committees, Child Welfare Committees, and Balvikas (Child Development) Committees are being implemented to raise awareness at the village level. Individuals and organisations making significant contributions to this cause will be recognised and honored on the occasion of Children's Day, a press release stated.
Chamarajanagar Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag said, 'Eliminating child marriage requires a united effort from all sections of society with the support from all the departments.' We urge every individual to join hands and support the ongoing awareness initiatives, she added.

"The political situation in Bangladesh is not stable, and in light of the diplomatic standoff, the Indian government has advised the BCCI not to go ahead with this tour," the source said. Both the countries are facing trade-related tensions at the moment after the Indian government imposed a major import route restrictions on goods, which includes ready-made garments and processed food items from Bangladesh. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has also issued a notification that no ready-made garment products can enter India via northeast-based integrated check posts (ICPs). It came after Bangladesh imposed a similar restriction in April. According to the Future Tours Programme (FTP), India are set to travel to Australia in October-November for three ODIs and five T20Is. Post that, India will host South Africa in November-December for two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. If the Bangladesh tour is called off, Rohit and Virat will return in India colours in Australia.

Pakistan's hockey teams will not be stopped from competing in next month's Asia Cup and the junior World Cup in India as any move to block the arch-foes would be a violation of the Olympic Charter, a sports ministry source said on Thursday. While the Asia Cup is scheduled to be held in Rajgir, Bihar from August 27 to September 7, the junior World Cup will be organised in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10. "We are not against any team competing in India in a multi-national competition. If we try to stop Pakistan it would be seen as a violation of the Olympic Charter. But bilateral is different and there will be no relaxation on that front," the source said. The Charter is akin to the constitution of the Olympic movement and stresses on sport as a tool for promoting international peace and cooperation. As a result, any attempt to block a rival country from a multi-national event adversely impacts the host nation's prospects of getting future hosting rights. When asked whether this means India will be allowed to play against Pakistan in the Asia Cup of cricket in September, the source said, "The BCCI is yet to reach out to the ministry on this. We will address this query when they approach us." India and Pakistan have been avoiding bilateral sporting engagements for close to two decades but even multi-lateral face-offs were in doubt after the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 tourists were gunned down in April. In May, India retaliated with Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan leading to a tense military showdown that de-escalated on Pakistan's request for a ceasefire. "International sports demands that we cannot back out from competing in multi-national competitions. Take for instance, Russia and Ukraine, they are at war but they show up at multi-national events and compete as well," he added. Hockey India (HI) welcomed the decision to allow Pakistan hockey teams to play in Asia Cup and junior World Cup in India.
