However, as the focus shifts to the track, things aren't going as smoothly for the seven-time F1 champion. Hamilton crashed a 2023 Ferrari F1 car during a private testing session on Wednesday, his first test driving with the iconic Italian team.
Hamilton crashed an SF-23 into the barriers while driving through the third sector of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, according to Motorsport.com. The 40-year-old walked away unharmed, but the Ferrari suffered bodywork and suspension damage. The crash was severe enough that it might derail the testing schedule of Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc, who won't be able to drive again until Thursday. Motorsport.com reports:
Charles Leclerc had been due to take over driving duties in what is a Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) session, which counts towards the four days and 1,000km yearly totals each F1 team can use with its race drivers in cars that are two years old or more.
Leclerc's run on Wednesday has been delayed while Ferrari fixes the SF-23 car – a variant of the machine that secured just a single win via Hamilton's predecessor, Carlos Sainz, in the 2023 season.
Hamilton's crash will likely be a slight bump for Ferrari, not a season-altering incident. Any F1 driver would rather crash in testing than an actual race. Off-track, the hall-of-famer's move to the Italian team has been an undeniable commercial success before the first race. Tsunoda linked the setback to a change Red Bull made to his car before the third practice session. He explained: "I don't think we were able to fix the major issue. To be honest, something we changed to in FP3. We were able to make a little bit of a back step with our side of the garage. Some bit of issue that we think we can avoid. It was fully in our control. "That's something that we shouldn't happen. We definitely have to improve for the future. Because that kind of made ourselves a bit clouded idea: What kind of car are we getting for qualifying? Which is a bit frustrating." However, there was one positive point Tsunoda noticed in qualifying. Speaking about matching Verstappen's pace, he said: "Yeah, I think definitely. Obviously, Max is Max. But at the same time, yeah. Definitely positive, like I said. I was very close to Max throughout the week. Some sessions I had. And I noticed some peaks come from my side of the car. So, I think, obviously frustrating that missing Q1. But also, he was almost out as well. So, something that I can be proud of."

If Piastri gets the better launch off the line and clears Leclerc into Turn 1, he becomes the clear favorite. Verstappen In The Wilderness For Max Verstappen, it's been another uphill weekend. The Dutchman spent most of practice wrestling with a lack of grip and a car that seemed unwilling to rotate the way he likes. He qualified eighth; not disastrous but well below where Red Bull was last year. What's more concerning is how he's struggled to assert dominance over the Aston Martins, who seem more planted in the mixed conditions. Still, if rain arrives on Sunday, it could swing momentum his way. In the wet, Verstappen seems to thrive, especially when the car stops being the difference and instinct becomes the great equalizer. Hamilton's History Says Don't Count Him Out While teammate Leclerc snatched pole, Lewis Hamilton struggled — at least on paper. But is it really as bad as it looks? Throughout practice, Hamilton seemed to wrestle with the car's balance, yet his lap times weren't far off Leclerc's. Missing out on Q3 denied him the opportunity to make the most of the mixed conditions, where he typically shines. It's not the first time either. At Spa, he qualified poorly but turned it around with an early pit stop and clinical overtakes to climb back into the points. The Hungarian GP could follow a similar script. He's won eight times at the Hungaroring, more than anyone in history, and taken nine pole positions. Sunday may be less about glory and more about damage limitation, and he's done that dance before. Six drivers, within one tenth in Qx3. Weather that won't make up its mind. Like in Spa, the track might start off wet and then begin to dry, but visibility might allow more wet-weather running. Title rivals side-by-side on the grid. And a pack of experienced rain-dancers waiting to pounce. Hungary may be the last race before summer break but it could be the one that sets the tone for the rest of the season. Expect tension. Expect surprises. And maybe expect chaos.
