Sailors rescued by coastguard after orcas attack yacht
Two French sailors were rescued by the Spanish coastguard on Monday after their yacht was attacked by killer whales near Deba, close to Bilbao.
While rare in the Basque Country, similar incidents are more common further south in the Strait of Gibraltar, known as "orca alley".
Experts recommend specific actions if encountering orcas, including turning off boat engines, lowering sails, and avoiding loud noises, especially after Iberian orcas were sighted in Cornish waters.
Despite being called killer whales, orcas are dolphins, and experts suggest their behaviour of ramming rudders is likely due to boredom rather than aggression.

British teenager boards flight to Italy without a ticket after losing parents in airport
A British teenager boarded the wrong flight home after being separated from his family at Menorca Airport, Spain and ended up in Italy instead of London yesterday. The 15-year-old's parents lost sight of him and raised the alarm before discovering he had successfully boarded a flight to Milan Malpensa without a ticket after police reviewed CCTV. The boy and his family were meant to fly back from their holiday from the Spanish Balearic Island Menorca with Tui to London Stansted. Local authorities and easyJet staff met the teenager upon arriving in Milan and arranged his mother to fly out to meet him. They have now returned to the UK. A national police spokesperson in Mallorca said: 'Officers checked cameras in the departures area and saw the teenager had managed to get on to a flight to Milan. 'The airport had already activated its missing child alert system but it was deactivated after it was confirmed the lad was on his way to Italy.' An easyJet spokesperson told The Independent:'We have been investigating with the airport and our ground handling provider at Mahon how a young passenger was able to travel unaccompanied on the wrong flight to Milan on 4 August. 'The passenger was met by our team and the local authorities in Milan. We provided travel arrangements for a family member to meet them later that day and remained in touch with the family to offer our support.

Vaping passenger removed from Ryanair flight after setting off alarm in toilet
A Ryanair passenger caused an almost two-hour delay after allegedly vaping in the toilets before being removed from a flight to Spain. The 21-year-old man was detained on suspicion of breaching aviation laws on a flight from Edinburgh to Alicante on 3 July. The Boeing 737 Max 8 was scheduled to depart at 7.05am but didn't take off until 8.28am, according to Flightaware data. Passenger Tristan James Walker, 39, told Luxury Travel Daily: 'A young lad in a group happened to set the alarm off for apparently vaping. 'The pilot then came out after the air stewardess explained what happened, and then the pilot stated he would be removed from the plane. 'The young lad waited for over six police officers to come on board 'He was taken off, he was very calm, did not argue or anything, no drama.' Footage taken by traveller Walker shows the incident unfolding after the smoke alarm was set off. Those found to be vaping or smoking on a flight may face fines up to £5000 and flight restrictions. A representative for Police Scotland said: "Around 7.55 am on Thursday, July 3, 2025 were called to an aircraft at Edinburgh Airport. 'Officers attended, and a 21-year-old man was charged in connection with an aviation offence. A report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal." A spokesperson for Ryanair told The Independent: 'The crew of this flight from Edinburgh to Alicante (3 July) called ahead for police assistance prior to departure after a passenger became disruptive onboard. 'This passenger was offloaded before this flight continued to Alicante. 'Ryanair has a strict zero tolerance policy towards passenger misconduct and will continue to take decisive action to combat unruly passenger behaviour, ensuring that all passengers and crew travel in a respectful environment, without unnecessary disruption. 'This is now a matter for local police.'
