Why a brutal June could lead to a better July for these New York teams — and where it could get worse
The Knicks' season had just ended on the last day of May with a gut-wrenching Game 6 loss to the Pacers, which capped a gut-wrenching Eastern Conference finals that forever will be remembered for the Game 1 choke.
That's when the chaos began.

When the calendar flipped from May, the Mets were 14 games over .500, atop the National League East and operating with a manageable injured list. While the cracks started to show for the Yankees, they still possessed a comfortable American League East edge and, of course, a captain in the middle of yet another historic season. Remember those murmurs about Aaron Judge hitting .400? The reigning champion Liberty still hadn't lost a game, and Jonquel Jones' right ankle hadn't been injured yet.

Francisco Lindor had a June to forget with brutal month at the plate

Try it free Juan Soto's numbers were up across the board in June, but Francisco Lindor's stats went in a different direction. The Mets leadoff man posted a slash line of .204/.259/.369 with four homers and 14 runs scored in 103 at-bats. Advertisement 'I feel like when he's on, he's aggressive, and he's using the whole field … and not chasing as much,' Carlos Mendoza said before Tuesday's rainout against the Brewers. 'You see how his swing decisions continue to get better when he's clicking. So I feel like there's been a few games where I feel like he's getting there, but then there's a couple where he goes back to chasing a little bit too much or missing good pitches to hit, especially early in counts. 'But I think he's in one of those stretches where other players go through it, and if someone knows how to get through it and come out the other side, it's Francisco.' Francisco Lindor hit just .204 in June. Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images Advertisement Soto produced a slash line of .322/.474/.722 in June with 11 homers following a slow start to the season. Sean Manaea had the scheduled resumption of his minor league rehab assignment also washed out by rain. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS Advertisement Manaea was supposed to be back on the mound Tuesday night for Double-A Binghamton following last week's scare that caused him to be shut down briefly with loose bodies in his pitching elbow. The left-hander, who has been on the injured list all season due to an oblique issue, was supposed to pitch for the Rumble Ponies against Hartford. Sean Manaea, throwing a pitch during spring training, is scheduled to throw another rehab start on July 2, 2025. Corey Sipkin for New York Post The Mets said Manaea now will pitch for one of their minor league affiliates on Wednesday, but they did not specify which one. Advertisement 'Let's get through today first. With Manaea, we just gotta wait … and see how he responds afterwards,' Mendoza said before the rainouts were announced. 'I think he's [scheduled to throw] 45-50 [pitches] today and we'll continue to take it one day at a time, one outing at a time. 'We'll see how he bounces back from this one, but the fact that he's in a real game, that's a good sign, and we'll go from there.' Kodai Senga (hamstring) faced hitters Sunday in a live BP session and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, in addition to fielding practice. Mendoza said 'it's possible' that Senga could then progress to a rehab assignment, but 'we'll see how he responds to the bullpen tomorrow.' Tylor Megill (elbow) has another MRI exam upcoming, and according to Mendoza, 'he's definitely feeling better, but not throwing yet.' Advertisement Outfielder Jesse Winker (oblique) also was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Binghamton. He is expected to play two games at Double-A, Mendoza said, before moving to Triple-A Syracuse this weekend after an off-day Thursday. Clay Holmes is scheduled to pitch the opener on Wednesday at 1:10 p.m., and the Mets listed the nightcap (7:10 p.m.) as TBD instead of originally scheduled starter Blade Tidwell. Griffin Canning plans on reaching out to NBA star after Achilles injury, sees ‘positives to build off'
Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free There was a rash of Achilles injuries across the NBA during the postseason, and Mets pitcher Griffin Canning has a personal connection with a hoops star who has dealt with the surgery in recent years. NBA stars Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton all suffered the same season-ending injury during the playoffs that Canning sustained in the third inning of his start last Thursday against the Braves. Advertisement 'It sucks. Obviously, I want to and wanted to be out there with the guys, but I just love baseball, so I think that's probably the worst part, is I just don't get to play for a while,' Canning said before Tuesday's rainout at Citi Field in his first public comments since undergoing season-ending surgery on Friday. 'I think I'll be doing some research and reading up on all the basketball players and stuff that have had this so, yeah, figure out what to do.' Canning, who finished the season with a 7-3 record and a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts after signing with the Mets as a free agent from the Angels, said he hasn't reached out yet to Klay Thompson. 3 Mets pitcher Griffin Canning is helped from the field after getting injured in the third inning on June 26, 2025. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Advertisement The five-time NBA All-Star missed more than two full seasons after tearing his Achilles in 2020 while already recovering from an ACL injury. 'I'm good friends with Trayce, so he kind of connected me with his brother,' Canning said. 'So it's pretty early in the stages of this. Once I have some questions, I'm gonna reach out to Klay, for sure.' The 29-year-old Canning emerged as a bargain for the Mets after inking a one-year deal worth $4.25 million in the offseason, and this injury likely will cost him a bigger payday in free agency this winter. Advertisement 'I felt like I was just executing pitches and had a good understanding of what I wanted to do going out there,' Canning said. 'Yeah, it sucks. That last game, I felt like I took something from the [previous] game in Philly, and felt like I was getting better. But it is what it is. 'I think there's a lot of positives to build off. It was just awesome being part of this group of guys. So I'm looking forward to sticking around and helping in any way I can, and just taking it one day at a time.' CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS The Mets also presently have starting pitchers Kodai Senga, Tylor Megill and Sean Manaea on the injured list, though Manaea was slated to resume his minor league rehab assignment Tuesday night for Double-A Binghamton at Hartford. Free agent signing Frankie Montas recently returned from a season-opening IL stint. Advertisement Canning said his doctors 'didn't really give me an exact timeline, but maybe like nine months' before he can return. The veteran righty added that the surgery was 'not super painful or anything,' and the initial injury felt like 'somebody kicked me in the back of the leg.' 3 Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson (31) shoots the ball past Memphis Grizzlies forward Santi Aldama, left, during the second half of an NBA play-in tournament basketball game Friday, April 18, 2025. AP 'The doctor said it went really well. I saw him [Monday], got the splint off. There wasn't that much swelling or bruising or anything,' said Canning, who was on crutches and wearing an immobilization boot. 'It stinks. I'm a competitor. I want to play. I want to be with the team. I'll be here for every game I can and help in any way I can from here on out. 3 New York Mets player Griffin Canning injured on the field. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post 'Maybe I can [provide] kind of an outsider-looking-in perspective, and might be able to see some things. I'll sit down with Hef [pitching coach Jeremy Hefner] and [assistant] Desi [Druschel] and see how I can help.'

NBA rumors: Bill Simmons floats intriguing Darius Garland trade to Nets
The post NBA rumors: Bill Simmons floats intriguing Darius Garland trade to Nets appeared first on ClutchPoints. After earning the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers were stunningly eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the NBA playoffs, leaving the team's fans and analysts wondering if the 2025 offseason could be one of change. In particular, could Darius Garland be on the move? Advertisement Popular NBA podcaster Bill Simmons certainly thinks so. Simmons, on the latest episode of his podcast, suggested Garland could be traded by the Cavaliers this offseason. To whom is unclear, but he thinks a potential deal with the Brooklyn Nets could make sense for both sides. 'I feel like Garland is going to be in play, and I think a lot of people in the league feel this way. And now in the last week, there's been some media people and there's been some buzz about it. There's a couple pieces to this, which is Cleveland, the second apron, the tax. They have some real money stuff,' Simmons said. 'So if they trade Garland, they have to go down a little bit. I was looking at Brooklyn for him, and that's going to be my 'I wouldn't be surprised if' team. With Brooklyn, if it was Garland and Okoro, Cam Johnson coming back to the Cavs with the number-seven pick and some other asset, because I think he's worth more than that. But there's something there. And if you're Brooklyn, you're like, we finally have our guy. This is one of the best 25 guys in the league. He's young, he's gonna be [on] his own team, he could be our Haliburton, we're going to build an entire roster around everything that he's good at.' The Nets, after shipping out veteran players Dennis Schroder and Dorian Finney-Smith, don't have much else other than Johnson that could entice a team trying to compete for a championship like the Cavaliers. However, Cleveland could theoretically make a trade for Johnson in order to get under the second apron, opening up other trades in the process. Advertisement A potential wrench in the plans of a Darius Garland trade may be his health; the All-Star guard struggled with a toe injury during the playoffs, and earlier today, he underwent surgery and will be rehabbing for the next four to five months. The Cavaliers say Garland is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, but ESPN's Shams Charania and Brian Windhorst reported that he 'is likely to miss time to start the regular season.'
