Murwillumbah preview, tips: Ethan Ensby's Rainbow Lass chases hat-trick
Following two solid wins over 1000m and 1200m on her home track at Casino, trainer Ethan Ensby feels to time is right to test Rainbow Lass over a longer distance in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1550m).
'She is going enormous at the moment,' said Ensby.
'She is obviously stepping up to the 1500m for the first time and being by Pariah, she probably isn't bred to get that far but at home, my partner rides her work and she is showing us she is that 1400m to a mile type.
'She sat three-wide working up the hill at Casino over the 1200 metres last start which is like running 1300 or 1400 metres.

'She does like a wet track so the Soft 7 will suit her. My only concerns are the weight, she carriers 58.5kg after Izzy's (Neale) claim, and the gate if she happens to blow the start like she has been known to do.
'If she gets out and into a good position, she should be very competitive.
'If she happens to win this race, I might aim her at the Grafton Guineas.'
Ensby is looking forward to seeing Mahuika Maroi make her race debut in the Country Boosted Maiden Handicap (1200m).
The three-year-old has been safely beaten in both her barrier trials but Ensby said things didn't go as he'd hoped on either occasion.
'When she trialled at the Gold Coast, it was supposed to be on the B Grass but they switched to polytrack which I wasn't very happy about.
'I didn't want to trial on the poly but with the weather the way it was, she had to go around and use it as a bit of a gallop and hope for the best.
'She wasn't put under any pressure that day.
'We then went to Grafton for her next trial and she slipped coming out of the gates on the wet track and tweaked a muscle hence while it's been a while until her first start.
'She finds a really nice race start off in and although the 1200 metres will be short of her best, I think she will run a nice race with the expectation she will be better for it.'
Ensby has Shez Mysterious and Gold Puma in the Maiden Handicap (1550m) but is leaning towards splitting the pair and saving the later for either Port Macquarie or Lismore during the week.
Shez Mysterious failed on her home track on May 30 but Ensby feels it is worth forgetting that run and judge her on her first two starts.
The daughter of So You Think debuted with a fourth to Rainbow Lass on a Heavy 10 at Casino before coming from a conspicuous last when beaten just over a length in fourth place at Inverell on May 23.
'I think the heavy track and the quick back-up went against her last start. She just didn't handle it,' he said.
'I think it would pay to forgive her for that.
'I've given her a bit of time since then and the beauty of training at the farm is it allows me to put her out during the day.
'He first-up run at Casino was encouraging then second-up, she stood like a deer in the headlights in the barrier at Inverell and came out a clear last.
'She really closed of strongly though.

Back to 1010m and was beaten a nose at his only run at this trip. DARE TO LOVE (5) finished a half-length in front of Siglo De Oro when third in that Doomben race. Buffeted at start and worked early when seventh at Doomben last start. Will find this easier. MISS LINNY (7) will be better over further but can run well first-up.

Was a three-quarter length third at Warwick two starts back before a half-length second to Monastery at Ballina. BETTER YET (4) drop sin grade from his win and fourth at Ipswich at his past two starts.

INSINUATE (3) recorded her maiden win over this track and distance in February. After a couple of unplaced Eagle Farm runs, dropped back to country grade with a big win at Casino followed by a third last start both over 1400m. RAINBOW LASS (5) was just pipped at Ballina before winning her next two starts nicely at Casino over 1000m and 1200m. Up to 1550m for the first time which is a query but her dam won up to 1600m so worth a try. CAPITAL BOSS (1) has claims on his Gold Coast two starts back.

LUCKY NEKO (11) was caught three-wide without cover when fifth to Ultimate Say at Grafton first-up. Jumped straight to the front and scored by over a length from Rock The Machine over 1400m at Casino last start. Drops back to 1200m but drawn well and gets a 2kg claim again. FLAME TREE STAR (3) resumes here and has placed in both first-up runs. Was beaten a short half head by Neil over 1100m fresh up last time in. SUPERZOOM (6) had a tough run at Warwick last start and has been freshened. Is a winner this track and distance.

Tamworth previews: Bowen's Zakor set for success

Muswellbrook housed galloper Zakor will make the trip out to Tamworth for the eighth time in his career chasing what would be his third win at the track and distance set aside for the feature event. The six-year-old's first run at Tamworth coincided with his first win; Aaron Bullock steering the then Jan Bowen-trained two-year-old to an easy triumph in the April 6, 2021 maiden immediately prior to his honourable fourth in the annual Romantic Dream Plate. Fast forward to the present and while Zakor is still owned by his breeder, Jan Bowen, he has switched stables to her grandson, Justin, for whom the horse has raced nine times. During that sequence, Zakor posted an emphatic win at his home track last centred in between four other minor placings. 'You take the winner (Flame Of Hestia) out and he's right there fighting it out for the finish. The winner was just a class above them on the day and we won't find one of them at Tamworth, that's for sure. 'The Wyong track is a little tight and he is a big boy so by the time he winds-up it's all over but a track like Tamworth will definitely suit him. 'He is always highly competitive and back to his own grade on Friday, it is certainly one of races that with the right run and a bit of luck, he'll be right there. 'If we can find the right race, which I think we have, he is ready to break through again.' Zakor has been ridden by some of the best in the business in his time with Justin Bowen, namely Aaron Bullock, Ashley Morgan, Clayton Gallagher, Darryl McLellan and Josh Parr. This week, it will be the turn of highly regarded young apprentice Bronte Simpson in the TLE Electrical Benchmark 74 Handicap (1000m). 'I have followed her for a while and she is riding really well,' Bowen said. 'She is always messaging me every time we've got a runner asking if we have anything and we finally got the right one for her. 'Zak is pretty tractable. He is pretty easy just to jump and be on speed and the way Bronte rides, she does such a good job, so I think she'll get along with him pretty well.' For the record, Zakor is a son of Golden Rose and Doomben 10,000 winner Epaulette who was exported to Turkey in 2021 to continue his stud duties. Bowen heads to Tamworth with a second Epaulette foal, this one named Atoka who is raced in partnership by Jan Bowen and the Hunter Valley living legend, Pat Farrell. The four-year-old Atoka is rated a $71 chance to win the Anytime Self Storage Units Class 1 Handicap (1200m) but is given a much better hope of securing a rare (second) win by her trainer. 'It is a nice race for her,' Bowen said. 'She gets through the wet and she enjoys Tamworth. 'I can see her bouncing back and running a good one.' Atoka will need a few scratchings to make the cut, stablemate Thirteen Under will need a flood of absenteeism in the same race, but is not without hope of a medal should he be granted the opportunity. 'He is his own worst enemy. He gets too far back and misses the kick but if he can jump clean and put himself in a position, he is also one that can just pipe up and run a blinder on the day,' he said. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Ace race broadcaster Anthony Manton can add another winner to his tally should the Waikato Stud graduate Imezaaki find his old spark in the Warnelec Electrical Services Benchmark 58 Handicap (2100m). Manton is no stranger to the winner's stall, most often with company from others in one of his Patriot Bloodstock ventures. As for Imezaaki, he was originally sold for $200,000 at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale to Bjorn Baker. It was during his stay there that Imezaaki recorded his career personal best when finishing third in the Group 3 BRC Grand Prix (2100m) in December 2023. This week's assignment is over the exact same trip, third-up off a 1400m and mile run for his new handler, Craig Clegg. 'He has run over a trip a few times before,' Clegg said. 'I have been happy enough with him. I would have loved to have had another mile under his belt, just to be more satisfying, but we'll know on Friday whether that's true or not. 'I have looked through his form, he's run places on Soft but it is going to be Heavy (this week) but they have all got to plough through it.' Clegg, meanwhile, takes two of his string into the rich and rewarding Anytime Self Storage Units Country Boosted Class 1 Handicap over 1200m with Rembroy and Cascan fighting it out for the enhanced purse. 'It's a $30,000 Country Boosted race,' Clegg said. 'It terrific what Racing NSW are doing for up here.' Clegg is leaning the way of Rembroy and hardly surprising given the powerful nature of the gelding's June 16 win at Tamworth under Aaron Bullock. 'The last 50 to a 100 metres was nice the other day and Aaron said the same thing,' Clegg said. 'He's drawn (barrier) 3 so Aaron will put him in a nice comfy spot, you'd think.' And while Rembroy has been dealt a 'winning draw', his stablemate will be one of the last of the runners called up. 'Cascan is drawn wide but it's a get back type who will hopefully run home,' Clegg said. 'It might be a bit short for her but I had to give it a run somewhere to get a bit of match fitness under her belt.'

Hawkesbury preview: Rain brings optimism for Stephen O'Halloran

Local trainer Stephen O'Halloran was quite happy to see the rain this week and the track enter the heavy range for his in-form gelding Mal Coupe. The three-year-old was good on the soft when a close second at Canberra first-up this preparation but excelled on the heavy ground when he won his maiden at Bathurst by four-and-a-half lengths. He then followed it up with a solid length second behind Hawker Hall on a Soft 6 at Gosford. With that big win on his resume, Mal Coupe has been a popular on TAB Fixed Odds where he firmed from $5.50 second elect into a $3.20 favourite ahead of Duke Of Bronte ($2.80 to $3.60) in the Essential Asset + Fire Conditional Benchmark 68 Handicap (1100m). 'Even when he got beat at his next start at Gosford, he was pretty good there as well where he ran into a nice horse of Kris Lees'. 'He's very honest and gives a hundred per cent every time he goes around. You can't ask for any more than that. 'I know it's in the heavy range again this week so he's going to get conditions to suit. 'Obviously this race is a benchmark 68 which is stronger than what he has been up against but I don't think he is out of place. 'He's rock hard fit and only carriers 55 and a half kilos. He has ticked the 1100 metres box and the heavy track box. 'It's his home track and hopefully he can get across the line in front. The son of Xtravagant raced well in his first campaign including a debit fifth behind Lady Zodiac and Gunroom at Hawkesbury last October but O'Halloran always knew he would be better this preparation. 'He has definitely come back more mature than he was last preparation and he hasn't put a foot wrong in his three runs so far,' he said. 'He's a home-bred for his owners, Gary and Kay Stevenson, who have been very patient with him. 'He was very immature as a young horse so we have taken our time with him. 'Last preparation was more about education but he showed us a little bit. 'We gave him a nice break and hopefully they reap the rewards with him this preparation.' O'Halloran and the Stevenson's also combine with Rule Of Faith who makes her race debut in the Davo's Dash 2YO Maiden Handicap (1000m). The daughter of Hellbent finished in the second half of the field in her two trials but O'Halloran has seen enough in her trackwork to suggests she has nice ability. 'She is only a two-year-old and was very new when she first came in so she had a couple of short preparations. This campaign is the furthest she has got but she is a nice filly,' he said. 'We gave her two trials. The first at Rosehill when there weren't any in the provincial area and she met good horses there. 'Then she had another trial here where she was caught wide. 'I worked her in blinkers last week and she went really well so she will start with them on. 'Emma Ly has been on in her two trials and knows her well so she will ride her. 'She's an emergency at the moment but I expect there to be a few more scratchings with the way the track is. 'I know she has drawn wide but you probably want to be out there when the track is in the heavy range.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Trainer Amanda Turner said her promising gelding Point Score had genuine excuses for the last start defeat and is ready to bounce back. The striking black colt suffered interference on the home turn which led to further complications when fourth behind Zouripper at Kembla 12 days ago. Prior to that, Point Score sat outside the leader before racing away to an impressive win by nearly two lengths from Mysterious Master and Kilbrannan when resuming on a Heavy 8 at Kembla on May 31. 'He was very good winning at Kembla. He seems to be pretty comfortable on the heavy ground,' said Turner. 'I was disappointed last start, not in his performance but rounding the turn, he was just looming in to it lovely when he was hampered and all but came down. 'He got going again and went to sprint but his race plate shifted and he got two nails stuck in his foot. 'He could have dropped right out but to run fourth was a good effort. 'I really looked after him to make sure nothing came from that. His foot is as good as gold so he is right to go now.' The two-year-old son of Blue Point will again get a heavy track when he lines up against older horses in the Brad Widdup Racing Class 1 Handicap (1000m) with Mollie Fitzgerald to continue her association with him. 'Mollie galloped him last Saturday morning and we were very happy with him,' Turner said. Turner will head to Hawkesbury with another youngster in Over The Limit who makes his debut in the Davo's Dash 2YO Maiden Handicap (1000m). The first crop son of Anders trialled nicely when a length third to Warson in his first heat at Warwick Farm on May 26 and followed up with a win from War King in his second heat there on June 10. 'He is doing well (to get to this point) because this is his first serious preparation,' said Turner. 'His nickname is Tiny because he was so small and last time in, we didn't get to do much at all. 'We gelded him and tipped him out for a good break and he is now almost 16 hands so he has really grown. 'I just want him to have a very good race day experience this week. 'I expect he will be much better next time in.'

Warwick Farm preview: Doyle backs Llewellyn in metro debut

Apprentice jockey Shannen Llewellyn impressed new boss Nathan Doyle with her winning ride on Aroha Stone and he didn't hesitate in keeping the combination together as they make their metropolitan debuts. Llewellyn had only been with Doyle's Newcastle stable for 10 days when she guided Aroha Stone to a near two length win from Cha Cha Cha over 1600m at Gosford. It was also just reward for Aroha Stone who was just pipped by stablemate Caltsar at Kembla the start prior. 'They did get all the favours. They went lickety-split up front and she just camped behind them,' said David Dyson, Doyle's racing manager. 'That was Shannen's (Llewellyn) first ride for the stable and she did everything right. 'She never went around a horse, quickly pouncing on the inside run when it come and they were too strong late. 'Each run this preparation has been good in its own right. It was just good to see her get the monkey off her back last start. 'Hopefully she can go on with it now.' Aroha Stone steps out in the TAB Handicap (1600m) where she has drawn ideally in barrier 5. 'Nathan has always thought she was a metropolitan class filly and she gets the chance to prove it this week,' Dyson said. 'Shannen started with us on June 9 - she is on loan to us for three months – and she is a very hard worker, very dedicated to what she does. 'Nathan had no hesitation in keeping her on this week. The minute we nominated Aroha Stone for this race, we told Shannen she had the ride. 'They have drawn to get the perfect run and Shannen's three kilo claim brings her into it quite well. 'If they get the breaks, lightning might strike twice.' Doyle loyalty also extends to Andrew Gibbons who sticks with Mornington Pier in the Hawaii Five Oh @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1600m). Gibbons had to work overtime to guide Mornington Pier to a first-up win at Newcastle when he came from last to run down Dalio and Tango Queen. 'He was first-up over 1400 metres and Andrew rode him every step of the way. He never travelled at any stage,' said Dyson. 'I spoke to Andrew about him a couple of days ago and he said 'it wasn't until the 150 metres where I thought I was going to win'. 'It was a really good effort to actually win. 'He came to us with the thinking he was a stayer but in his trials he looked a little sharp which is why we went to 1400 metres first-up instead of a mile. 'Everything he did prior to coming to us suggested he will get a trip and what he showed us the other day says the same thing. 'He will appreciate stepping up to the mile and will be even better as he gets out further.' Doyle also saddles up Mercy Me who makes her debut in the Asahi Super Dry Plate (1200m) for two-year-old fillies where she has barrier 5. The daughter of Hellbent has been very good in her trials including a last start win in her Wyong heat on June 16. After leading, she was given a shake up after straightening and extended nicely before pricking her ears near the line to beat Raging Force. 'She was asked to find the line by intent in that trial,' said Dyson. 'Nathan has a very good opinion of this filly. 'She is a very sharp filly and drawn to get a beautiful run in the race. 'Ash (Morgan) rode her in her trials and was keen to ride her on race day.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Trainer John Thompson couldn't have been happier with the way American Starlet performed first-up and gives her a great chance to break through. The daughter of American Pharoah was the victim of a wide barrier when resuming in the 1200m Midway Handicap at Rosehill on June 14. Having to go back to last in the field of 14, American Starlet was spotting the leaders a conservative eight lengths approaching the home turn before closing nicely between horses to finish just over two lengths off Motoscafo in fifth place. 'She ran really well first-up. She closed off very well and the jockey (Braith Nock) came back very happy,' said John Thompson. American Starlet has fared much better in the draw this week where she drew barrier 3 in the Castelvecchio @ Arrowfield Handicap (1400m) with Braith Nock again on board. 'This is another nice race for her. Up a little bit in distance suits, she's got a good draw and a good rider so she ticks a few boxes,' Thompson said. 'The good draw is the key. She is going to get a nice run from there. 'I would expect she is box seating and be prominent in the finish.' While American Starlet is one of the favourites in her race, Thompson saddles up a couple of long price runners in other races but feels they can run cheeky races on a likely heavy track. Welcome Gypsy has been a victim of outside barriers in both starts back from a spell forcing her to endure wide runs in Benchmark 78 races at Randwick. She has again drawn out in the Brave Smash @ Yarraman Park Handicap Benchmark 72 (1000m) where she has gate 9. 'She just can't draw a barrier,' Thompson said. 'This is a good drop in grade for her though so that should help. 'She can run a much improved race. 'She loves it wet, a Heavy 10 is her go. She's a swimmer. 'The draw could turn out to be not so bad because they will probably want to get to the middle of the track. She will go forward and make her own luck.' Stablemate Hellaine also has a wide gate to overcome in the Traffic Warden @ Darley Handicap (1200m) but will relish the wet track. 'She hasn't had much luck of late. Doing it a bit tough up front,' he said. 'We will ride her a bit quieter this week and I expect her to run alright.'
