Alcaraz jokes he's done playing Murray after golf loss at Wimbledon

Malay Mail3 days ago
LONDON, July 7 — Carlos Alcaraz joked that he did not want to play Andy Murray again... in any sport after losing to the former world number one on the golf course.
The two-time defending Wimbledon champion revealed last week that he and the retired British star were level at 1-1 after two games of golf.
Murray tweeted on Saturday: 'We played the deciding match this afternoon. Maybe ask him what happened after the next match.'
Alcaraz, who had just beaten Russian 14th seed Andrey Rublev to reach the fourth round at the All England Club on Sunday, pretended he had forgotten his defeat.
'I didn't remember playing any matches yesterday,' joked the 22-year-old during his on-court interview. 'I have to show up. I have to say he beat me.
'We were playing in his home, so it could be really bad for him if I beat him in his home so I let him win once.
'But I lost against him as a player, as a coach, on the golf course, so I'm not going to play against him anymore.'
Murray, 38, retired last year after a career in which he won three Grand Slams, including two Wimbledon titles.
The two men met twice on the tennis tour, with one win apiece.
Murray also helped mastermind a win for Novak Djokovic against Alcaraz when he was coaching the Serb at this year's Australian Open. — AFP

Rugby-Former England captain Farrell named for Lions tour match against AUNZ

Lions head coach Andy Farrell brought son Owen into the squad last week following Elliot Daly's broken arm, which ruled the versatile back out of the three-match test series against the Wallabies. Though boasting 118 England caps and three previous Lions tours, the 33-year-old playmaker's inclusion was polarising given he has not played a test since 2023 and is coming off an injury-plagued season in French club rugby. Andy Farrell, who defended Owen's inclusion last week, said on Thursday his son was no different to other teammates in needing to catch up fast to the Lions' playbook. "He's the same as everyone else who's had to get up to speed pretty quickly," Farrell told a press conference in Adelaide on Thursday. "Everyone had to at the start and a few have come in since. I think the art of this stage of the tour is mentally being as switched on as you possibly can. "There's not that much training that you can do. We're at a captain's run tomorrow and that's the preparation for this game." With only a couple of days' break following the laboured 36-24 win over the ACT Brumbies, Farrell has overhauled his squad while retaining a few players from Canberra. Winger Mack Hansen and loose forward Henry Pollock, who each played off the bench against the Brumbies, were included in the starting 15. England playmaker Marcus Smith has also been retained on the bench after replacing injured fullback Blair Kinghorn when he came off in the first half in Canberra with knee trouble. Farrell said he was hoping for good news on Kinghorn ahead of the first Wallabies test in Brisbane on July 19. "Whether it's going to be long term or shortish term, I don't think it's as bad as what could have been," he added. "It was something innocuous, really. Just a rugby accident that was unfortunate." Hugo Keenan will start in the number 15 jersey in Kinghorn's place in Adelaide, with lock Tadhg Beirne to captain the side as Maro Itoje is rested. Farrell's team will face 14 test players in the AUNZ line-up coached by Les Kiss at Adelaide Oval, their final run-out before the Wallabies. "As a unit, how they gel together, there's a little bit of unknown there," Farrell said of their opponents. "It looks like a formidable side, doesn't it, that's going to be hard to stop." Team: 15-Hugo Keenan, 14-Mack Hansen, 13-Huw Jones, 12-Sione Tuipulotu, 11-Duhan van der Merwe, 10-Fin Smith, 9-Ben White, 8-Ben Earl, 7-Jac Morgan, 6-Henry Pollock, 5-Tadhg Beirne (capt), 4-James Ryan, 3-Will Stuart, 2-Luke Cowan-Dickie, 1-Pierre Schoeman Replacements: 16-Ronan Kelleher, 17-Andrew Porter, 18-Finlay Bealham, 19-Scott Cummings, 20-Josh van der Flier, 21-Alex Mitchell, 22-Marcus Smith, 23-Owen Farrell (Reporting by Ian Ransom in Melbourne; Editing by Christian Radnedge)

Swiss mum Bencic through to her first Wimbledon semi-final

LONDON: Switzerland's Belinda Bencic won two tiebreaks to beat teenage Russian seventh seed Mirra Andreeva 7-6(3) 7-6(2) on Wednesday and become a first-time Wimbledon semi-finalist. The only mother left in the singles draw had four match points after Andreeva double-faulted in the second tiebreak on Centre Court and needed only the one, sealing victory with a smash at the net. The first Swiss woman to make it to the last four since Martina Hingis in 1998 will now play Poland's five-times Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek for a place in the final. Andreeva, 18, fired four aces in the opening set to none for Bencic but there was next to nothing between the closely-matched pair until the Russian netted a couple of forehands in the ensuing tiebreak. Bencic then had two break points at 4-4 in the second set, Andreeva saving one before hitting long to go 5-4 down and leaving the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion to serve for the match. Andreeva refused to follow the script, however, and broke straight back to 5-5 before going to 6-5 with 28-year-old Bencic, who had her daughter Bella in April last year, then serving to take the match to another tiebreak. The Swiss raced to a 6-2 lead and wasted no further time with the match already entering its third hour, despite hobbling slightly with what she said later was a cracked toenail. "It's crazy, it's unbelievable. It's a dream come true," Bencic said. "I tried not to think about it at the match point. I'm just speechless. It is my second Grand Slam semi-final overall and my first at Wimbledon. Just speechless, so happy," added the 28-year-old. The sound of a champagne cork popping was something of an omen when it stopped Bencic mid-serve in the second set. She won the point and gave a thumbs up in the direction of the offender. "I studied all evening yesterday to come up with a plan. I think it worked out well," she said. "With two tiebreaks it is not easy, it's just a small edge." Bencic's only other Grand Slam semi-final was at the 2019 U.S. Open, when she lost to Canada's eventual winner Bianca Andreescu. Now back in the top 20 after maternity leave, she was proud of what she had achieved. "I didn't say it to myself much before but since having Bella I say it to myself every day," she told the crowd. "It's not only me, I wouldn't be able to do it without my amazing family and team. We worked so hard on the comeback.
