Chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Hindustan Zindabad' echoed through Delhi Airport late Friday night as a special flight carrying 290 Indian nationals evacuated from Iran under Operation Sindhu touched down.
Emotional returnees, including students and religious pilgrims, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian government for ensuring their safe return amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.
Among those evacuated was Tazkiya Fatima, a resident of Noida, who recounted the tense situation in Iran and praised the coordination between Indian authorities. "There is a situation of war over there. We were not sure how we would make it out of there, but the Government of India made the whole process very smooth. I am very thankful to the Indian government. I am a resident of Noida," she said.
Eliya Batool, another evacuee, described the emotional relief of returning home. She said, "... I am unable to express what I am feeling right now. My family was very worried. In Iran, we were at ease, we were provided with a 5-star hotel and safety was provided to us. But after coming here, we feel at ease. Thank you so much, Indian government. We did not face any issue there because our Embassy made everything easy for us..."
Maulana Mohammad Saeed Saeed also praised the swift and safe evacuation. He said, "We are happy and grateful that we have been able to return home safe and sound. The situation in Iran is no good and we all know. Indian Embassy and our Ambassador made the evacuation process very smooth and safe..."
Sehrish Rafique, an MBBS student at Iran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, highlighted how the situation escalated rapidly. "The situation in Iran was quite devastating. At first we didn't expect that it would escalate so much. At first I couldn't believe the Indian Embassy would make so much efforts for us. All Kashmiris are really thankful to the Indian government..." she said.
Mir Mohammad Musharraf, from Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama, also praised the efforts of the Indian government, saying, "I am from Pulwama, Kashmir... Operation Sindhu is amazing and really helpful. The services were very good. We contacted our embassy. We were stuck in Tehran, unaware of what to do. Our landlords also left and were left behind. It was only our embassy that helped us reach here. Thank you so much, Indian government."
Speaking to the media in Delhi, Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (CPV & OIA), Ministry of External Affairs, said, "... The third flight carrying 290 Indian nationals from Iran, as part of Operation Sindhu, has landed. 190 out of them are from J&K, others are from Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, West Bengal, and other states. It is a matter of happiness for us that the Government of Iran has opened its airspace for us, and it shows the relationship between India and Iran... These people are very happy on reaching home, and they have thanked the Indian government... Operation Sindhu flights will soon commence from Israel as well..."
Many evacuees also expressed their appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the MEA.
Mehboob Ali Musharraf from Bijnor said, "I thank Modi Ji and the Indian government for making such good arrangements for our return. We are very happy. I am from Bijnor... Every moment felt very long. I am very grateful that we were evacuated at the earliest..."
Syed Mansur Hussain, another evacuee, added, "Everyone expressed their gratitude and bowed their heads as soon as they landed in India. We thank PM Modi and the Indian government... I love India."
The special flight landed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport late Friday night, as part of Operation Sindhu, India's ongoing mission to evacuate citizens amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.
The flight arrived at 11:30 PM IST on Friday and was received by Secretary (CPV & OIA) Arun Kumar Chatterjee.
Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), said in a post on X, "Operation Sindhu flight brings citizens home. Evacuated 290 Indian nationals from Iran, including students and religious pilgrims, by a charter flight. The flight arrived in New Delhi at 2330 hrs on 20 June and was received by Secretary (CPV & OIA) Arun Chatterjee."
He added, "The Government of India is grateful to the Government of Iran for the facilitation of the evacuation process."
Earlier on Thursday, a flight carrying 110 Indian students evacuated from northern Iran arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
The Central government has launched Operation Sindhu to bring back Indian citizens stuck in Iran and Israel amid escalating conflict between them.
Conflict between Israel and Iran has entered its 9 day. The conflict erupted after Israel launched 'Operation Rising Lion' on June 13, targeting Iran's nuclear and military facilities. In retaliation, Iran also launched several drone and missile attacks.

'Playing Xizang Card…': China Says Dalai Lama Succession Thorn In Ties With India

Last Updated: China said India should be aware that the Dalai Lama's reincarnation and succession is an "inherently internal affair of China, brooking no interference of any external forces" Ahead of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's visit to China – the first time since the Galwan clashes in 2020 – China on Sunday said the succession of Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, is a thorn in its relations with India. The Chinese embassy in New Delhi said India should be 'fully cognizant" to the sensitive nature of issues related to 'Xizang' – a term used by China to refer to Tibet – and that the reincarnation and succession of the Dalai Lama is an 'inherently internal affair of China, brooking no interference of any external forces". 'In reality, Xizang-related issue is a thorn in China-India relations and has become a burden for India. Playing the 'Xizang card" will definitely end up shooting oneself in the foot," Yu Jing, spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in India, wrote on social media platform X. 🔹It has been noted some people from strategic and academic communities, including former officials, have made some improper remarks on the reincarnation of Dalai Lama, contrary to Indian government's public stance.🔹As professionals in foreign affairs, they should be fully… — Yu Jing (@ChinaSpox_India) July 13, 2025 WHAT DID CHINA SAY ABOUT 'XIZANG'? noted 'some people from strategic and academic communities, including former officials" have made 'improper remarks" on the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. This, Beijing claimed, is 'contrary to Indian government's public stance". ' Yu did not name anyone but in recent days, Indian strategic affairs analysts and a government minister backed the Dalai Lama's remarks on his succession. The Indian government has made political commitments to China and recognises Xizang Autonomous Region as part of the territory of the People's Republic of China, Yu said. It does not allow Tibetans to engage in political activity against China in India, the embassy official added. WHAT IS INDIA'S STANCE? Earlier, too, China had warned India over the 'sensitivity of issues" related to Tibet and the Dalai Lama by using the term 'Xizang' for Tibet. It had said India should avoid interfering in China's internal affairs. It was objecting to remarks made by Union minister Kiren Rijiju, who sat next to the Dalai Lama during the birthday festivities a week ago, and said as a practising Buddhist, he believes only the spiritual guru and his office have the authority to decide on his reincarnation. His remarks seemingly backed the Dalai Lama's statement that China had no role to play in his succession. Calling this 'anti-China separatist nature", Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning called on India to honour its Tibet-related commitments. In response to this, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) had said the central government does not have a position on the succession of the Dalai Lama. It reiterated India's stance of not taking a position on faith or religion. 'Government of India does not take any position or speak on matters concerning beliefs and practices of faith and religion," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, while responding to media queries on July 4. 'The government has always upheld freedom of religion for all in India and will continue to do so." Ahead of celebrations this month for his 90th birthday that were attended by senior Indian ministers, the Dalai Lama riled China again by saying it had no role in his succession. Tibetans believe the soul of any senior Buddhist monk is reincarnated after his death, but China says the succession will also have to be approved by its leaders. The Dalai Lama has been living in exile in India since 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet, and Indian foreign relations experts said his presence gives New Delhi leverage against China. India is also home to about 70,000 Tibetans and a Tibetan government-in-exile. (With agency inputs) Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Sayfollah "Saif" Musallet was killed in the town of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. A second man was also reported killed by gunfire in the same incident, news agency ABC reported. He died before he could be taken to hospital. American citizen killed amid West Bank violence He is the fifth American reported killed in the West Bank since the Israel–Hamas war began on October 7, 2023. Musallet was born in Florida, lived in Tampa and owned a business there. He had traveled to the West Bank on June 4, his family said. In a statement, his family described him as 'a kind, hard-working, and deeply respected young man' known for his generosity, ambition and strong connection to his Palestinian heritage. "This is an unimaginable nightmare and injustice that no family should ever have to face," the family said in a statement demanding justice for Musallet's death. Musallet's family has demanded the US State Department to lead a thorough investigation and hold those responsible accountable for their crimes. A US State Department spokesperson confirmed the death of a US citizen in the West Bank on July 11, but declined further comment out of respect for the family's privacy. "The US Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of US citizens overseas," the spokesperson said.
