Futra Days review – esoteric sci-fi romance offers lovers time-jump ‘happiness heists' to save relationships

The Guardian12 hours ago
With studio projects abandoning Los Angeles as a shooting location, it's the low-budget crowd that are still holdouts, presumably out of necessity. Futra Days is another in the line of esoteric films about overheated Angeleno creative minds that the pandemic seemed to encourage; the likes of the hermeneutic sci-fi Something in the Dirt or family found-footage He's Watching. But running time-travel rings around a dysfunctional relationship, Ryan David's sophomore effort is just a bit too infatuated with itself.
Jaded record producer Sean (Brandon Sklenar, looking like Chris Evans and Glen Powell spliced) is wondering whether a new crush on thrift-shop worker and aspiring singer Nichole (Tania Raymonde) will go the distance. So he signs up to a 'happiness heist': being catapulted into the future by an experimental time-travel clinic run by Dr Felicia Walter (Rosanna Arquette) whose medical qualifications seem, well, questionable. After replacing his future self, who is in the process of walking out on an exasperated future Nichole, he decides to try to reboot their relationship.
The opening is a kaleidoscopic blitz that sets a promisingly dislocated tone for what is shaping up as an Eternal Sunshine-style breakdown of disintegrating love. But it quickly degrades into a set of maudlin pity-party conversations; neither svengali Sean or his protege Nichole emerge clearly enough as characters to jump satisfyingly through the hoops of the big plot transitions. Sean crashlands back into the wreckage of their mutual contempt in the present, then appears to have some kind of Lost Highway-esque psychogenic fugue into another reality in which he is now the inferior partner living on her dime.
The chronology is sloppy and semi-logical, rather than artfully fractured; David overcompensates by lathering on a highfalutin philosophic voiceover, as well as gratuitous visual glitches and unnecessary stylistic fussing. Sklenar and Raymonde's chemistry and deftly layered performances, as well as consistently sharp shot-making and editing, are a touch wasted on a film that can't see the characters for the concepts.
Futra Days is on digital platforms from 21 July.

Livvy Dunne wowed by baseball star's impressive performance... but it's NOT boyfriend Paul Skenes

Livvy Dunne was left gobsmacked after one of her boyfriend's baseball teammates hit some absolute bombs during the MLB Home Run Derby. The TikTok sensation and former LSU gymnast was at Truist Park in Atlanta with her Pirates-star beau Paul Skenes for the annual All-Star Game event on Monday night. And while taking in the action, Dunne could not believe her eyes when Pittsburgh outfielder Oneil Cruz let rip with one of his 21 home runs that saw him advance to the semifinals. Cruz, who crushed a 513-foot homer on the night, averaged 447 feet during the first round with a top exit velocity of 118mph. Dunne shared a video on Instagram of the Dominican star sending one flying into the stands, before spinning the camera round to show her stunned reaction. She also included the caption 'holy cr@p' while saying in the background 'oh my god'. Dunne and Skenes, who is set to make his second consecutive All-Star game start on Tuesday after being drafted by the Pirates last year, were captured on ESPN's broadcast cheering on Cruz from the sidelines. The social-media beauty also shared a pic of her and Paul taking in the festitivies while sat side by side. Earlier on Monday, Dunne had shared a pair of snaps to her Instagram Story of herself and her man on a private jet bound for the ATL. The couple rode in style and in comfort - with the cabin of the aircraft adorned with slick wood accents and cushioned leather chairs. The couple are both in Georgia this week after Skenes was named one of the best baseball players at this point in the season.

If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission - learn more 'As If!' the 30th anniversary of the famous movie Clueless wasn't a big enough deal, Mattel has now released a brand new line of Barbie dolls to celebrate the staple 'it girl' movie of the 90s. Creators of the dolls are 'totally buggin' as the line features main characters Cher and Dionne, bringing to life the essence of the cult-classic 90's movie. Inspired by Jane Austen's novel Emma, Clueless was written and directed by Amy Heckerling and earned $56.7 million worldwide following its July 1995 release. It immediately became a pop culture favorite, with iconic lines like 'whatever!' and, 'she's my friend because we both know what it's like to have people be jealous of us' from main character Cher (Alicia Silverstone) about her best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash). The socially successful and somewhat shallow teens live their luxurious life in Beverly Hills, where they indulge in all things shopping, playing with digital wardrobes and driving enviable convertible cars. After her first day of junior year, Cher takes upon herself philanthropic duties, in which she undertakes the responsibility of giving the new loner girl, Tai, a much needed makeover. She starts to 'bug,' however, when she finds out Tai has become more popular than she ever was, while also struggling with the emotional journey of finding her perfect boyfriend…. which turns out to be her ex-step brother, Josh (Paul Rudd). The movie pokes fun at popular high schoolers of the 90s, while also shedding light on the fact that Cher, the glamorous and rich party girl, struggles with her own self-image issues. 'Girls and women all over the world respond to the movie to this day because the characters have this sense of themselves,' says costume designer Mona May, who spoke to the New York Post. 'Even though Cher had flaws and was self-centered, her actions come from trying to improve the world as she's improving herself.' Its iconic quantities have carried on 30 years later, as Mattel looks to re-imagine the renowned Cher and Dionne duo. Looking to mirror the playful preppy look of the 90s compared to the grunge aesthetic that took the fashion world by storm, Mona May used plaid in Cher and Dionne's duo outfits to show off the defining look of the era. The Cher doll, features her classic sunshine yellow plaid suit with a pleated skirt, matching blazer and over-the-knee white socks. 'The doll also carries a mini white backpack, cellphone and learner's driving permit… a homage to her not-so great driving skills. The Dionne Barbie doll, wears a black-and-white plaid suit with a ribbon and rose donned top hat. 'The doll carries a cellphone as well, obviously. The dolls are now available for pre-order and set to be released to the public on July 19th, with each available for $59.40 on the Walmart website and $55.99 on Amazon and Target websites.
