Soulsborne Sequel Gets Very Metal Trailer Full Of E3 2008 Energy

This metal-infused Mortal Shell II trailer really reminded many of us at Kotaku of the kind of over-the-top but fun trailers we'd seen back in the mid-00s. The screaming metal, the angry executions, and the mention of what the song is at the start. Very 2010 or so energy. And I'm here for it.
The devs have removed any kind of stamina system from Mortal Shell II, according to a press release shared by Gematsu. 'Mortal Shell II's combat system is agile yet grounded,' say the devs. 'Unrestricted by stamina, players exploit multiple tactics to shatter enemy posture and strike critically.'
Mortal Shell II is set to launch on consoles and PC in 2026. No specific console was shared, but I expect it will arrive on PS5 and Xbox sometime next year.

Supergiant's latest Hades II patch is likely its last before launch
Despite it having upward of 61,000 reviews on Steam, Hades II isn't actually out yet. The sequel to Supergiant Games' hugely successful roguelite dungeon crawler has been in early access on PC for over a year, and even the early builds were extremely polished and content-rich for what is still a work-in-progress game. But we (and Switch owners) have been waiting patiently for that 1.0 release date, and it looks like it might be just around the corner, with Supergiant confirming that the latest Unseen Update patch is likely to be the final one ahead of the full launch. The third major early access update arrived on June 17, and was focused primarily on combat tweaks, as well as adding a new Vow of Rivals that not only made Guardian encounters tougher, but forced players to switch up their strategies for each bout. The latest patch is mainly a host of minor adjustments to existing items and abilities, as well as some balancing on the aforementioned Vow of Rivals Encounters. No more new story content or areas are due to be added ahead of the v.10 launch, with Supergiant confirming back in June that the game's true ending is being held back for the full release. If you're a console player or just wanted to hold out until the game is finished, it's probably safe to start getting excited. That said, PlayStation and Xbox owners are going to have to wait a little longer, because while we still don't know Hades II 's release date, we do know that the game is launching on PC and both the Switch and Switch 2 initially, mirroring the release roadmap of its predecessor. The developer has already assured fans that both Nintendo consoles can run the game at a smooth 60 fps, with the Switch 2 version benefiting from the console's larger 1080p display in handheld mode.

With so many incredible games to play, it might be a bit of a struggle to pick out which ones are worth playing, which is why we've put together this list of the best games of 2025 so far. These rankings are decided by Metacritic, where an aggregate of review scores from professional critics is applied to each game, and the Metascore is listed next to the game's name in our list. We've also excluded remasters and re-releases, and picked the highest scoring platform for each game, as scores tend to shift a bit depending on the hardware it's being played on. 1. Split Fiction – 93 Split Fiction is the latest game from Hazelight Studios, best known for its prior work on award-winning games like It Takes Two and A Way Out. Like those games, Split Fiction is an exclusively co-op affair, filled with a lovely story of overcoming differences, accepting the past, and embracing the future. You can play solo on a single screen in the same room, or use the free friend pass to play over the internet, which is also a huge plus. Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PC 3. Blue Prince – 92 Indie roguelike puzzle game Blue Prince was a surprise smash hit when it released earlier this year, nearly instantly taking over the free time of anyone who caught wind of it. It's a fascinating game that has players exploring a mansion that changes every day, which can be influenced by drafting certain cards and rooms. Just about everyone who played Blue Prince absolutely fell in love with it, so just be aware that if you pick it up, you may lose weeks of your life to it. Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC 4. Death Stranding 2: On The Beach – 90 Hideo Kojima and the team at Kojima Productions have done it again. Death Stranding 2 is a sight to behold, and it's one of the best-looking games on the PS5. It's got a bonkers story, as you'd expect from Kojima, and a whole host of gameplay improvements over the first game, and both make it worth checking out, even if you weren't super keen on the first game. Available on: PS5 5. Monster Hunter Wilds – 90 The Monster Hunter series has been rapidly growing in popularity since the release of Monster Hunter World back in 2018. Monster Hunter Wilds took the lessons learned from World and its follow-up Monster Hunter Rise to create a story-driven, fast-paced game with some of the best combat in the series' history. Some players have been mixed on the game's difficulty – or lack thereof – and PC optimization could certainly be better, but nobody has any complaints about the gameplay itself. It's phenomenal. Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC 6. Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector – 90 Citizen Sleeper was a huge leap forward for the RPG genre, and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector took it even further. It's filled with tension, incredible world-building and character writing, and a whisper of tabletop gaming that made it feel both familiar and fresh. It's best played after its predecessor, and there's no better opportunity to play both games than right now. Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC 7. Despelote – 89 Despelote came out of seemingly nowhere to become one of the most fascinating and beautiful games of the year. It's an autobiographical slice-of-life adventure game set in Ecuador in 2002 when the country qualified for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. As a player you'll explore the city through the eyes of an eight-year-old boy, connecting with others and yourself through soccer, video games, and shared national pride. It's got an entirely unique art style that captures the fuzzy memories of a simpler life, and you owe it to yourself to play it. Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC 8. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – 88 As much a medieval life simulator as it is a video game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 takes a system-heavy, immersive approach to storytelling and gameplay. You'll step back into the shoes of Henry of Skalitz, who'll need to fulfil the role of a soldier, a spy, a blacksmith, or so much more to make his way through medieval Bohemia. It's an incredibly ambitious game that sticks the landing more often than not, and it's been highly praised by press and critics alike. Available on: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC 9. Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo – 88 Pipistrello is a delightful indie game from Brazil that is heavily inspired by some of the best games of yesteryear, including The Legend of Zelda. It's got some gorgeous pixel art, a great mix of puzzling and adventure exploration, and a brilliant soundtrack featuring a guest track from Kingdom Hearts composer Yoko Shimomura. If you miss adventure games from the GBA era, Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is for you. Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC 10. Monster Train 2 – 87 Sometimes you just need a rock-solid deck-building roguelike to get you through the day, and Monster Train 2 does exactly that, building on the incredible foundation that the first Monster Train laid. There's a truckload of new content, some incredible tweaks to the first game's formula, fantastic quality of life additions, in addition to everything people loved about the first game. PlayStation Game Helldivers 2 is Coming to Xbox Next Month

The announcement was made during a stream by developer Arrowhead Games, where it was announced that Helldivers 2 will be released on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025. PlayStation Publishing, the publishing arm of Sony Interactive Entertainment, will predictably be publishing the multiplayer third-person shooter on Xbox, as it did on PS5 and PC. Sony Helldivers 2 first launched on PC and PS5 in February 2024, where it immediately became a huge success among critics and players. Despite some post-launch hiccups, with player backlash arising from a PlayStation login requirement on PC added after launch, the game went on to sell over 15 million copies and win dozens of awards, including Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards 2024. In the year and change since its release, it's also received a swathe of post-launch content, including expansions and regular in-game events, all of which has been well-received by the community. It's also been praised for its emergent storytelling, with actions from the community helping shape the overall story of the game. Helldivers 2 will be available in two editions on Xbox Series X|S, a standard edition costing $39.99 and a deluxe "Super Citizen Edition" coming in at $59.99, which includes an armor set, a cape, a weapon, Super Citizen status, and a Stratagem Hero Ship Game. Both are available to preorder on the Xbox store now, and preordering offers three promotional armor sets. "We know gamers have been asking for this for some time and we are so excited to bring more Helldivers into our game," Helldivers 2 game director Mikael Eriksson said in a post on Xbox Wire. "We have so much more in store for the future months and years – and the more players we have the more stories we can tell! The fight for Super Earth has only just begun." Curiously, the game is launching on the same date as one of Xbox's in-house games, Gears of War Reloaded, which is coming to Xbox, PC, and PS5. It comes after Microsoft cancelled multiple Xbox games amid aggressive layoffs that have seen 9000 staff laid off across the company, many of which were under the Microsoft Gaming and Xbox Game Studios banner. Rare's Everwild, The Initiative's Perfect Dark, and more games were shut down, with other projects expected to be announced to be ending in the coming days.
