Malaysia National junior team edges CBDT; HUTN, SAI-NCoE play out an exciting draw
Three matches produced a total of 21 goals with each match outdoing the other in terms of quality and suspense.
In the first match of the day, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu (HUTN) and SAI-NCoE (Bhopal) were involved in an eight-goal thriller, with both teams sharing the honours in a Pool-A tie.
Later in the two Pool-B matches, Indian Navy produced a robust performance to outwit Karnataka 4-2 while the Malaysian National junior team delivered a stand-out performance under pressure to edge out Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) 4-3.
After the shocking win over Indian Army the other day, much was expected from HUTN and the host did impress in the first quarter, attacking and defending with aplomb, leading 2-0.
However, SAI-NCoE fought back admirably scoring thrice in the second quarter exposing HUTN's defence.
The hosts, however, pulled up its socks in the third quarter by plugging the gaps and improving in the final third. HUTN captain B. P. Somanna was the star as he marshalled the team admirably. His second goal, off a penalty stroke, enabled it to equalise 3-3 and Balachandar scored off a rebound in a matter of minutes. However, TN's joy was short-lived as Amit Yadav converted.
The Malaysian junior team delivered a sparkling performance, especially through the flanks to beat CBDT, which put immense pressure on the young side in all the quarters.
Malaysia came up trumps, with a last-gasp goal through Shakir Azimuddin, who scored a scorching grounder off a penalty corner.
The results: Pool-A: HUTN 4 (Patras Tirkey 3, B. P. Somanna 15 & 41, Balachandar 44) drew with SAI-NCoE (Bhopal) 4 (Mohammad Zaid Khan 20, Manjeet 26, Manish Sahani 29, Amit Yadav 47).
Pool-B: Indian Navy 4 (Sushil Dhanwar 3, 20 & 34, Prashanth 53) bt Karnataka 2 (Bhrath Mahalingppa 12, G. Vishwas 35).
Malaysia National junior team 4 (Muhd. Danish Aiman 20, Mohd. Harris Iskandar 41, Shakir Azimuddin 54 & 60) bt CBDT 3 (Pranam Gowda 24, Pardeep Singh Mor 27, Vikash Choudhary 57).

Certainly, this is not the best Indian Army team that one has witnessed in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup invitation hockey tournament. Its forwards haven't stepped up to a great extent, though the defence has been saving grace. To be fair, it has played well within its limitations. Requiring a victory to stay alive in the competition, Army huffed and puffed to a 2-1 win over Maharashtra in a Pool-A contest at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Wednesday. Army will make it to the playoffs provided SAI-NCOE (Bhopal) loses or draws with defending champion and table-topper Indian Railways on Thursday. NCOE will enter the semifinals in place of Army if the former defeats Railways. Meanwhile, host Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu has been knocked out. Later, in a Pool-B tie, Indian Navy impressed with a 4-1 victory over Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), thanks to a brace each by Selvaraj and Ajinkya Jadhav. Navy, which has entered the last four with three straight wins, will take on former champion IOC in its last group match to decide the group topper. After a drab goalless first quarter, Maharashtra opened the scoring in the second through a penalty corner strike by Ganesh Patil. Within few minutes, Army equalised through a strong counter-attack from the left flank. A swipe by Mohd. Alishan from the backline found Pradeep Singh Bisht, who deftly deflected it home. Maharashtra returned stronger in the third quarter with attacks that rattled the Army defence. First, Arjun Hargude's strike from the top of the circle saw Army 'keeper Senthamizh Arasu come up with a fine save. A few minutes later, a withering backhander by Taleb Shah missed the post by a whisker. With seven minutes remaining for the hooter, Army found the winner when Niraj Kumar Singh took a little time before unleashing a reverse hit after receiving a pass from Rajant Singh. MCC-Murugappa Hockey Gold Cup: Railways blank TN 6-0, IOC beat Malaysia
CHENNAI: INDIAN Oil Corporation secured their third win of the tournament when they defeated Malaysia Junior National in a Pool B match in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Tuesday. After a goalless first half, Gurjinder Singh scored in the 33rd minute for Indian Oil. Sumit Kumar doubled the lead in the 58th minute. The Malaysia Junior National team showed flashes of promise but struggled to convert opportunities against a well-organised IOCL defence. In the second match of the day, Railways delivered a commanding performance defeating Tamil Nadu 6-0 in a one-sided encounter. Gursahibjit Singh and Pankaj Rawat each struck twice as RSPB overwhelmed their southern rivals. Simranjot Singh added a fifth in the 52nd minute, and Shivam Anand capped off the scoring spree two minutes later with another field goal.

Perhaps for the first time in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu (HUTN) sensed that it could enter the knock-outs. Starting with a draw against Maharashtra, the team then recorded a huge win over Indian Army in its second match, followed by a thrilling draw with SAI-NCOE (Bhopal) giving the belief that the host might make it to the semifinals. But defending champion Indian Railways did it no favour, posting a 6-0 thrashing here on Tuesday to maintain an all-win record. In Pool-B, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) put it across Malaysian National junior team 2-0 through goals from Gurjinder Singh and Sumit Kumar, both coming off penalty corners. Malaysia is out of contention along with Central Board of Direct Taxes from the pool. With five points and a goal difference of -2 from its four matches, Tamil Nadu's chances of making the last four depend on how the other two teams in contention fare, NCoE (four points from three matches) and Army (three from three), in their last group matches. Two goals each from former International Gursahibjit Singh and Pankaj Rawat ensured Railways complete the rout. But it was Gursahibjit who was instrumental in the champion team's triumph.
