Léon Marchand aiming to break the 200 individual medley record at the swimming world championships
Marchand won four individual gold medals a year ago at the Paris Olympics. But in these worlds he's swimming only the 200 and 400 medley — and a few relays — with his focus on taking down records.
This is Day 4 in Singapore and Marchand's first appearance, due to his lighter schedule.
American Ryan Lochte holds the 200 IM record (1 minute, 54.00 seconds) and Marchand set the 400 IM record (4:02.5) at the 2003 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan.
Five finals are set for Wednesday, and the Americans have a good shot in two. Claire Weinstein has the top qualifying time in the women's 200 freestyle with defending
Olympic champion Mollie O'Callaghan
of Australia just behind.
Luca Urlando leads the 200 butterfly qualifiers. He's aiming to be the first American since Michael Phelps in 2011 to win the world title in this event. It's also notable that Marchand isn't swimming. Marchand was the gold medalist in this event in Paris.
Ahmed Jaouadi of Tunisia had the top qualifying time going into the 800 freestyle final. Australia's Sam Short is the other top contender.
Qin Haiyang
of China is the favorite in the 50 breaststroke. He's already won the 100 breaststroke in these worlds. He swept the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke two years ago at the worlds in Fukuoka.
The day's last final is the mixed 4x100 medley relay.

NEW YORK (AP) — The first career save for Nic Enright was a particularly meaningful one. After four rounds of immunotherapy in early 2023, Enright made nine minor league rehab appearances for the Marlins before being designated for assignment and returning to the Guardians in late May. He missed most of last season due to a right shoulder strain, but went 2-1 with a 1.06 ERA in 16 appearances with Triple-A Columbus. The right-hander has one more round of cancer treatment scheduled for November. 'I made the decision when I was diagnosed in 2022 with Hodgkin lymphoma that I wasn't going to let that define my life and dictate how I was going to go about my life,' Enright said. 'It's something where, for anyone else who is going through anything similar, (it shows) I haven't just holed up in my house and felt sorry for myself this whole time.' Enright made his major league debut May 25 and has a 2.01 ERA in 19 appearances for the Guardians, whose bullpen is in flux with All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase on paid leave as part of a sports gambling investigation. Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith pitched the eighth and ninth innings Monday before Enright entered with a two-run lead. He gave up a two-out RBI single to Brett Baty before retiring Luis Torrens on a fly out to the warning track in right. 'I definitely held my breath as I saw Nolan (Jones) kind of keep running,' Enright said. 'But I had faith. As he kind of got closer to the wall, I realized it was losing steam.' Enright was showered with beer by teammates in the locker room. 'I was so happy, oh, I was going nuts in here,' Guardians starting pitcher Slade Cecconi said with a smile. 'I was going absolutely berserk. He came in running up the stairs, smile on his face.' Enright thanked his wife, his parents and the rest of his family for their support throughout an interview at his locker. He got the ball from the final out and plans to set aside his uniform and hat as well as a lineup card. 'Really, really cool,' Enright said. Raiders trade CB Jakorian Bennett to Eagles for DT Thomas Booker IV, AP source says
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders are trading cornerback Jakorian Bennett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade is pending physicals on both players. Bennett, drafted in the fourth round two years ago out of Maryland, started seven games for the Raiders last season before being shut down because of a torn labrum that required surgery. He played well as a cover cornerback, but Bennett was running with the second and third teams this training camp under first-year coach Pete Carroll. At 5-foot-10, Bennett doesn't fit Carroll's preference of playing taller cornerbacks. Six-foot Eric Stokes and 6-2 rookie Darien Porter have been competing with the starters this camp. Booker started one game and played in all 17 last season for the Eagles. He also appeared in four postseason games for the Super Bowl champions. But Booker, a 2022 fifth-round draft pick of Houston, was fifth on the depth chart at a deep defensive tackle position this season. The Raiders released defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on July 24 over a dispute over a recovery plan for a broken foot from last season.
