South Africa: Sibanye-Stillwater to acquire US PGM refinery for $82mln

Zawya5 days ago
Sibanye-Stillwater announced that it has entered into a purchase agreement to acquire Metallix Refining for $82m.
In operation for the last 60 years, Metallix produces recycled precious metals, including gold, silver and platinum group metals (PGMs), primarily from industrial waste streams.
It operates two processing and recycling operations in Greenville, North Carolina. Metallix has a global customer base, which it services from the United Kingdom and South Korea, in addition to its customers in the United States.
For the 12 months ended 31 December 2024, Metallix processed approximately 4.2 million lbs of precious metals bearing waste materials and produced approximately 21koz of gold, 874koz of silver, 48koz of palladium, 48koz of platinum, 4koz of rhodium, 3koz of iridium and 263klb of copper.
Metallix complements Sibanye-Stillwater's US recycling operations in Montana and Pennsylvania, adding processing capacity and proprietary technology.
Sibanye-Stillwater CEO Neal Froneman commented: 'We are excited to be adding Metallix to our existing recycling footprint – the scale, technology, and know-how add positively to our existing recycling operations and advance our urban mining strategy. We expect significant value uplift through the large number of synergies with our existing recycling operations.'
The acquisition enhances the group's global recycling reach and internal logistics capabilities, increasing its ability to source materials from multiple regions, facilitating the delivery of end-to-end solutions to customers.
Based on the latest audited financial information, Metallix has recorded positive earnings and cash flow and is expected to contribute positively to the Sibanye-Stillwater Group's earnings and cash flow immediately.
The transaction is expected to close during the third quarter of 2025, subject to receipt of applicable regulatory approvals customary to a transaction of this nature.

ENEC, Westinghouse ink MoU to accelerate nuclear energy deployment in US

Image: Supplied The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) and US-based Westinghouse Electric Company have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies in the United States, the companies said. The agreement, signed in Washington, DC, aims to support the expansion of nuclear power in the US, in line with federal ambitions to quadruple the country's nuclear capacity by 2050. It comes as the US seeks to meet growing electricity demand driven by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and data center expansion. Supporting US plans to quadruple nuclear capacity Under the terms of the MoU, ENEC and Westinghouse will explore opportunities to accelerate the rollout of Westinghouse's AP1000 reactors. The companies also plan to collaborate on US nuclear new build and restart projects, reactor deployment models, fuel supply chain cooperation, and operations and maintenance. ENEC touts Barakah experience as model 'This marks a significant step in supporting the United States' bold ambitions to rapidly expand its nuclear fleet,' said Mohamed Al Hammadi, CEO of ENEC. 'With The AP1000 is currently the only large modular reactor design fully licensed and ready for construction in the U.S., according to Westinghouse. Interim CEO Dan Sumner said the company is working with partners to meet a federal target of having 10 new large-scale reactors under construction by 2030. 'A fleet of AP1000 reactors would generate billions in direct economic impact and create tens of thousands of skilled jobs,' Sumner said. 'ENEC's expertise in nuclear deployment is a valuable asset to this goal.' The partnership also aligns with ENEC's international strategy to export nuclear development expertise gained from the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the UAE, which is now fully operational and supplies approximately 25 per cent of the country's ENEC is pursuing global opportunities through its ADVANCE programme, which includes an interest in small modular and advanced reactor technologies. Westinghouse, which built the world's first commercial pressurized water reactor in 1957, is involved in about half of the world's operating nuclear plants. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

South Africa: REACT drives inclusive recycling in CT with hubs relaunch

To drive sustainable and inclusive waste management in Cape Town, Regenize has relaunched its first five Recycling for the African Context (REACT) hubs across the city. Each of these decentralised micro hubs is designed to serve up to 1,200 households, bringing job-creating recycling infrastructure directly into underserved communities. Inclusive recycling ecosystem This relaunch forms part of Regenize's long-term vision to establish an inclusive recycling ecosystem across South Africa, laying the groundwork for future innovation, including the integration of electric vehicles into the collection process. Each hub offers free recycling collection services while integrating local waste reclaimers into the formal economy. Participants are rewarded with Remali, a virtual currency redeemable for essentials like airtime, data, and grocery vouchers. The relaunched hubs are strategically positioned to deepen community participation and environmental stewardship. They can be found in: - Bridgetown: Reable Centre, 152 Tarentaal Road - Kewtown: Kewtown Primary School, Klapperbos Street - Alicedale: Elizabeth Drive, Athlone - Norma Road: Silvertown - Rylands: 2 Carnie Road, Rylands Estate 'We're not just setting up recycling stations; we're building a model of community-driven sustainability,' said Ashley Arendse, Regenize chief business officer. 'By combining local engagement and practical solutions, we're creating a blueprint that can be replicated throughout the continent.' Residents are encouraged to take part by separating their recyclables and connecting with their nearest hub. All rights reserved. © 2022. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Oil prices gain on US trade optimism, drop in crude inventories

LONDON - Oil prices rose on Thursday, buoyed by optimism over U.S. trade negotiations that would ease pressure on the global economy and a sharper-than-expected decline in U.S. crude inventories. Brent crude futures had gained 52 cents, or 0.76%, to $69.03 a barrel by 1040 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures climbed 60 cents, or 0.9% to $65.85 per barrel. "The U.S. crude inventory draw and the trade efforts are adding some support to prices," said Janiv Shah, an analyst at Rystad. Two European diplomats said on Wednesday that the EU and the United States were moving towards a trade deal that could include a 15% U.S. baseline tariff on EU imports and possible exemptions, potentially paving the way for another major trade agreement following the Japan deal. On the supply side, U.S. Energy Information Administration data on Wednesday showed U.S. crude inventories fell last week by 3.2 million barrels to 419 million barrels, exceeding analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll for a 1.6 million-barrel draw. Oil had also seen some support from a suspension of Azeri crude exports from the Turkish port of Ceyhan and a brief halt to loadings at Russia's main Black Sea ports which has since been resolved. BP said that organic chlorides were detected in some of the oil tanks in the terminal at Ceyhan, adding that oil loading continued from some of the tanks with chloride levels assessed to be within normal specifications, while export activities via the BTC pipeline also continued. But analysts expect oil price gains to remain limited. "Uncertainty over U.S.-China trade talks and peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia is limiting further gains," said Hiroyuki Kikukawa, chief strategist of Nissan Securities Investment, a unit of Nissan Securities, predicting WTI would likely remain range-bound between $60 and $70 a barrel. Russia and Ukraine held peace talks in Istanbul on Wednesday, discussing further prisoner swaps, though the two sides remain far apart on ceasefire terms and a possible meeting of their leaders. "Next to watch would be the demand indicators as we are in the peak season and any upside or downside would impact refining margins," Shah added.
