HR Minister urges semiconductor industry to re-imagine Penang's future
"They should boldly re-imagine Penang's future, one that shifts the state's economic force from Made in Malaysia to Made by Penang/Malaysia, transforming it from an outsourced manufacturing hub into an innovation-driven economy," said the Human Resources Minister.
He was speaking at two industrial dialogues organised by InvestPenang over the weekend jointly with Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong and Invest Penang chief executive officer Datuk Loo Lee Lian.
The event gathered over 30 key stakeholders from Penang's semiconductor and advanced technology sectors, including those from multinational corporations and local small and medium enterprises.
Sim said nurturing local talent, developing homegrown technology and attracting strategic investments would empower Penang-based companies to not only serve global supply chains through manufacturing but innovate and design proprietary technologies backed by local expertise.
In a statement, Sim said more than RM40bil in financing and guarantees have been mobilised to empower micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the backbone of local industry and job creation.
"At the same time, government-linked investment companies will channel more than RM100bil domestically under the five-year (2024-2028) GEAR-uP programme to spur long-term growth.
"To reinforce household spending power, the government has approved civil service pay hikes and raised the private sector minimum wage, ensuring an additional RM20bil in extra income being spent in the economy.
As the Asean chair, Sim stated that Malaysia is leading efforts to strengthen the grouping's role as a cohesive regional economic bloc, where a recent joint statement by ASEAN economic ministers reaffirmed the region's united stance in navigating global economic challenges and external market volatility.

ROME: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was accorded a guard of honour upon his arrival at Chigi Palace, the official residence of his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni, on Thursday. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel and the resulting humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. Anwar was accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, as well as Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. Also present was Malaysian Ambassador to Italy, Datuk Zahid Rastam. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Italy increased by two per cent to RM14.61 billion (US$3.18 billion), compared to 2023. From January to May 2025, bilateral trade rose 3.3 per cent year-on-year to RM6.5 billion (US$1.48 billion). Italy remained Malaysia's fifth-largest trading partner and the third-largest importer of Malaysian palm oil among European Union member states last year. Anwar is scheduled to depart for Paris next, where he will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron during his two-day visit. Following that, the Prime Minister will head to Rio de Janeiro to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Anwar given official welcome by Italian government at Chigi Palace
ROME: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was given an official welcome by the Italian government at Chigi Palace, Rome, on Thursday. His arrival at around 12 noon local time was greeted by his counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, followed by the playing of both nations' national anthems. Anwar was then invited to inspect the guard of honour, followed by an introduction session with members of both countries' delegations. Accompanying him were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. Delegations from both countries then held a bilateral meeting, scheduled to last approximately 40 minutes. Anwar later departed for Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to continue his official visit to Paris, France.

Malaysia secures RM8.13 bill in potential investments from Anwar's Italy visit
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has secured potential investment worth RM8.13 billion in several sectors, including petrochemicals, machinery and equipment via bilateral meetings held in conjunction with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's visit to Italy. Anwar said potential investments were also secured in the electric and electronics (E&E) sector, as well as oil and gas services and equipment. Malaysia, meanwhile, generated RM425 million in potential exports for oleochemical products, biofuel feed, and livestock food additives. The bilateral meetings involved 41 Italian companies from the manufacturing, services and trade sectors and government agencies. Anwar said several key projects between Malaysia and Italy were reaffirmed during his official meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. "In my meeting with the Italian prime minister, which was the main highlight, Prime Minister Meloni and I reaffirmed several ongoing projects that are under discussion and consideration. "An interesting development is Italy's wish to elevate bilateral ties, as well as those between the European Union (EU) and Asean, as they see Asean's potential as a key driver in regional activities and economic development. "As we know, we achieved several framework agreements on economic activity. A project between Petronas and Italy-based European company ENI, known for its strength in biochemicals and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS)," he said at a press conference with Malaysian media yesterday. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is currently undertaking a series of visits to three countries – Italy, France, and Brazil – beginning July 1. This series of visits by the Prime Minister is part of Malaysia's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic cooperation at the global level.
