Transformation Of Felda To Forge Ahead As Nation's Pride
KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- Felda is undergoing a transformation process by reorganising its strengths to face new challenges, to remain relevant, sustainable and continue to be the pride of the country, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
In a post on X, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said Felda is no longer just relying on traditional sectors but is now exploring the fields of education, entrepreneurship, food technology, arts and culture to ensure its survival and success.
"Since its establishment 69 years ago, Felda has not only been the backbone of rural development, but has also opened up opportunities for more than 112,638 settlers and almost three million Felda generations nationwide to enjoy a better life.
"Felda today is no longer just about rubber, oil palm and land scheme. It is undergoing a process of reorganising its old strengths to face new challenges, to remain relevant, sustainable and continue to be the pride of the country.
"I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all Felda settlers for their sacrifices, efforts and unwavering spirit since the establishment of Felda. God willing, with the support of all parties, Felda will continue to be a catalyst for rural prosperity and a strategic asset for the country," he said in conjunction with Felda Settlers' Day today (July 7).
Ahmad Zahid said that since the beginning, Felda has remained with the mandate of providing land to the landless, creating dignified jobs and eradicating poverty, which has been the basis of its success to this day.
For 2025, he said several key agendas would be the backbone of joint efforts for the benefit of the people and the country, including efforts to restore Felda's values and dignity to a higher level.
He said this included strengthening the economic well-being of settlers through increased income, new opportunities and community empowerment as national goals to uphold the services of settlers and ensure that they continue to be the backbone of rural and national development.
In addition, Ahmad Zahid said Felda's role also needed to be strengthened as a major power in the world's food and commodity industry, given that Malaysia is now emerging as a major player in the global palm oil industry through FGV, the world's third-largest crude palm oil (CPO) producer.

Umno must give youth the opportunity to make decisions
This step is crucial for Umno to keep pace with the evolving nature of today's political landscape, which is no longer driven by rhetoric. Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi attended the 2025 Lumut Umno Division Delegates Meeting at Dewan Merdeka, Manjung Municipal Council recently. Bernama FILE PIX SHAH ALAM – Umno should open up greater opportunities for youth to actively participate in the party's decision-making process by involving them directly in leadership teams that work collaboratively to interpret and communicate the party's ideals in a way that speaks to the younger generation. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) political analyst Professor Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said this approach should be supported by the introduction of progressive policies that align with the aspirations of today's youth. Doing so, he said, would encourage young voters to assess political affiliation based on values and direction rather than personal loyalty to individual figures. Umno must ensure that no significant generational gap exists. Inset: Sivamurugan He emphasised that this step was crucial for Umno to keep pace with the evolving nature of today's political landscape, which was no longer driven by rhetoric. 'The reality is that politics is dynamic and no longer static. Umno must respond to this dynamism through substantive transformation, moving beyond mere historical values or legacy, though those still have their place. 'Umno must ensure there is no significant generational gap and instead build a leadership continuity that includes the systematic development of future members,' he told Sinar on Monday. He was responding to recent remarks by Umno vice presidents Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, who both called on the party to adopt a fresh strategy to win over younger voters. Umno vice president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Bernama FILE PIX Johari emphasised the need for Umno to move away from politics rooted in nostalgia and instead embrace a more dynamic and forward-looking approach, acknowledging that no political party can realistically expect to secure a clear majority in future general elections. Wan Rosdy, meanwhile, highlighted the importance of adopting fresh strategies to reclaim lost seats, including the Kepala Batas constituency in Penang, ahead of the upcoming 16th General Election. Building on this, Sivamurugan echoed the concerns raised by the party's senior leadership. He stressed that Umno must also remain consistent in advancing an inclusive and progressive narrative that focuses on real, everyday issues affecting the public. 'The issues frequently raised require strong commitment, such as the cost of living, taxation, education, housing, healthcare, digitalisation and democracy. 'In the meantime, Umno should practise a form of moderate, realistic politics, humble and empathetic without compromising its ongoing defence of Malay-Muslim principles, but doing so through a more innovative approach suitable for the current age of artificial intelligence (AI),' he said. He added that communication is now the most vital element in politics, as it needs to connect with people's hearts and emotions. Therefore, he said, networks and communication channels must be built to enable sincere, trustworthy and integrity-based engagement.

Ringgit opens lower on cautious sentiment after US tariff policy update
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar on Tuesday as market sentiment turned cautious following the United States' (US) latest reciprocal tariff policy adjustments, which will take effect on Aug 1, 2025, said an analyst. At 8 am, the local note depreciated to 4.2345/2430 versus the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2310/2400. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose by 0.31 per cent to 97.480 points following the US government's announcement that the pause period for the reciprocal tariff would expire soon. The tariff rate for Malaysia has been revised up slightly to 25 per cent from 24 per cent prior to the pause. Mohd Afzanizam noted that under the latest round of tariffs announced, some countries -- such as Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Bosnia -- are seeing a reduction in tariff rates compared with the figures given in April, while others will have unchanged or slightly higher rates. "As for Malaysia, the tariff rate has been revised upward to 25 per cent from 24 per cent previously. We believe this will influence market sentiment today, likely leading to a risk-off mode,' he told Bernama. In this regard, Mohd Afzanizam said, the ringgit could trade on a cautious note, possibly around RM4.23 to RM4.25 today. At market open, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. The local currency appreciated versus the Japanese yen to 2.9029/9092 from 2.9091/9155 at Monday's close. However, it eased against the British pound to 5.7691/7807 from 5.7563/7685 yesterday and declined vis-à-vis the euro to 4.9700/9800 from 4.9647/9752 previously. Meanwhile, the ringgit traded lower against its ASEAN counterparts with the exception of the Thai baht. It rose versus the Thai baht to 12.9745/13.0082 from 12.9837/13.0173 at yesterday's close. However, the ringgit slipped vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3110/3180 from 3.3096/3172 on Monday, weakened against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.7/261.3 from 260.5/261.2 previously, and edged down versus the Philippine peso to 7.47/7.49 from 7.46/7.48. - Bernama
