PM Shehbaz directs for early finalization of national industrial policy
Chairing a high level meeting in Islamabad, he said development of domestic industries is inevitable for export-led economic growth.
Pakistan reveals National Tariff Policy draft, aims to eliminate RDs, ACDs in 5 years
The Prime Minister said equipping the industries with international standard manpower and technology is the government's top priority.
He said recent economic policies have been devised with the aim to give a boost to domestic industries.
He mentioned the tariff rationalization policy, and said it will promote investment in the country.
During the meeting, recommendations were presented for development of domestic industries. It was informed that the country's manufacturing sector will be revived through an effective industrial policy.
In a related development earlier, the federal government unveiled the draft for the National Tariff Policy (NTP) 2025–30 at the Regulatory Reforms Conference on Wednesday.
The conference, organised by the Board of Investment (BoI), aimed at advancing regulatory simplification and industrial competitiveness, bringing together federal ministers, diplomats, and private sector representatives for a strategic dialogue on Pakistan's economic direction.
'The National Tariff Policy 2025–30 is designed to create a predictable, transparent, and investment-friendly tariff structure,' said Rana Ihsaan Afzal, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Commerce, read a statement released by the Ministry of Commerce.
The NTP 2025–30 outlines ambitious reform goals, including the phasing out of ACDs in four years, elimination of RDs and the 5th Schedule within five years, and the establishment of a simplified four-slab Customs Duty structure (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%).

Sustained tariff reforms: Aurangzeb underscores significance
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee for the Implementation of the National Tariff Policy here on Monday. The meeting was attended by Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, Governor State Bank of Pakistan and senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and other relevant ministries, divisions and organisations. The finance minister underscored the significance of sustained tariff reforms as a cornerstone of Pakistan's trade policy. He highlighted that the National Tariff Policy represents a five-year roadmap toward liberalising trade, fostering export-led growth, and enhancing industrial competitiveness. Pakistan prepared for regional fallout, optimistic on US tariff talks: Aurangzeb Aurangzeb emphasised that the Steering Committee, constituted by the prime minister, has been entrusted with the critical task of continuously monitoring implementation progress, state of forex reserves, and guiding the transition of domestic industry during this period of reform. During the meeting, the National Tariff Commission (NTC), operating under the Ministry of Commerce, delivered a detailed presentation on its mandate, core functions, and recent performance. The Commission outlined its pivotal role in safeguarding domestic industry through rational tariff structuring and trade remedy actions against unfair trade practices, including dumping, subsidised imports, and harmful import surges. Participants were also apprised of the NTC's ongoing efforts to bolster institutional capacity. These include organisational reforms, targeted technical training, automation of internal processes, the proposed establishment of a dedicated facilitation centre for exporters, and initiatives to enhance legal and analytical capabilities to strengthen service delivery. The finance minister acknowledged the valuable contributions of the NTC and urged the commission to maintain its focus on ensuring a level playing field for local producers. He extended his support for addressing the commission's resource challenges and emphasised the importance of reinforcing Pakistan's anti-dumping framework. However, he advised that rather than expanding in size, the NTC should strive to become a lean, responsive, and fit-for-purpose organisation aligned with international best practices and compliant with the rules of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The meeting concluded with a shared resolve among participants to continue working in close coordination for the successful implementation of the National Tariff Policy, thereby, reinforcing Pakistan's trade competitiveness and industrial development. PM Shehbaz unveils FBR's first AI-powered customs system
Listen to article Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched Pakistan's first-ever artificial intelligence-based Customs Clearance and Risk Management System (RMS), Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced during a meeting to review ongoing FBR reforms. Under the new system, AI and BOTs will assess the nature and cost of imported and exported goods. Officials said the system will use machine learning to automate and refine customs operations over time, reducing delays and human intervention. Initial testing showed a 92% improvement in system performance. Tax determination through Goods Declarations (GD) rose by 83%, while green channel clearances more than doubled. The government expects the RMS to increase transparency, boost efficiency and reduce pressure on customs officials. The AI tools are designed to offer faster, more accurate estimates, saving time for both authorities and traders. Prime Minister Sharif called FBR reforms a 'top priority' and said automating the tax system would help ensure fairness and convenience for taxpayers. 'By automating the tax system, we are making it more transparent and effective,' the prime minister said adding that the technology-based modern system will bring ease in doing business and provide convenience to taxpayers. The premier also reviewed new video analytics-based tax collection tools targeting the manufacturing sector. These technologies are expected to enhance revenue collection without direct human involvement and were found to be 98% efficient during pilot tests. Ministers Muhammad Aurangzeb (Finance), Attaullah Tarar (Information), FBR Chairman and other senior officials attended the meeting.
