Ara: People of Jawaniya village under Damodarpur panchayat in Shahpur block of Bhojpur district are spending sleepless nights as the Ganga river continues to erode land at an alarming pace, swallowing homes and temples.
"About 50 houses have been lost to the river in the past seven days," said Ram Awatar Yadav, a local resident whose house was among 15 that were swept away on Tuesday.
Another villager, Lagan Gond, shared his ordeal: "Even the remains of my house, which partially survived last year's flood, have been completely consumed by the river this time. I built it with much effort, and now it's gone."
The erosion has also claimed a concrete water tank built by the govt in ward no.
4 of Jawaniya village. Religious sites, including Govardhan and Kali temples, and two ancient peepal and neem trees, have also been submerged.
On it's part, Bhojpur district administration has given Rs 1.20 lakh each to 59 flood-affected people whose houses went under the river Ganga last year. Besides this 29 people have been given the land 'parcha' for building their new homes at safer places, said DM Tanai Sultania.

To help the displaced, the administration has increased the number of community kitchens from one to three. These are currently operational at Jawaniya High School, Jawaniya embankment and Damodarpur village embankment, according to revenue official Nitish Kumar.
Relief measures include free medical camps, potable water, milk for children, fodder for cattle, polythene sheets and transportation to safer areas.
"Instructions have been issued to ensure the distribution of quality meals to affected villagers," stated a press release from the DM's office.
Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Ara MP Sudama Prasad called for immediate and permanent measures. "A concrete embankment must be constructed to prevent future disasters. The root cause erosion needs a lasting solution," he said, also demanding compensation of Rs 25 lakh each for families who lost their homes in the flood.

Cracks in Mangaluru-Madikeri NH275 retaining wall spark landslide fears; residents evacuated
MADIKERI: The first landslide-prone spot on the Mangaluru-Madikeri NH275 that caved in during the 2018 floods is once again under threat, with the multi-crore retaining wall at the site developing major cracks. Residents living right below the wall have been asked to shift to a relief center in Madikeri. Permanent relief work across the Mangaluru-Madikeri National Highway, which has become vulnerable to landslides and road slips, has remained a distant dream from 2018. While crores of funds have been sanctioned for temporary relief works, the National Highway faces the threat of collapse and poses a risk to commuters every monsoon season. This highway is lined with several retaining walls, including the Rs 7.5 crore retaining wall behind DC Office that also faced the threat of collapse and is currently being strengthened. Another retaining wall on this road is located about 4 km from Madikeri city centre and was sanctioned after a major landslide on the road in 2018. Thousands of sandbags were then lined across this vulnerable spot and crores of funds were released for the establishment of the retaining wall. After over five years of project sanction, the retaining wall recorded was completed in 2023. Nevertheless, just two years after its completion, massive cracks have developed on the retaining wall that faces the threat of collapse. Following the development of cracks, Madikeri taluk tahashildar visited the spot and requested the families residing below the retaining wall to shift to a relief centre. Meanwhile, the locals voiced against the authorities for poor quality work and urged them to take action against the concerned contractor. DC Venkat Raja visited the spot and inspected the retaining wall.

3.3L sit for Haryana teachers' test, result in 3rd week of Aug
Rohtak: A total of 3.3 lakh candidates appeared for the Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test (HTET) 2024 on Wednesday and Thursday, said an official here. The test is usually conducted in Oct-Nov period, but it was held in July for the first time this year. Haryana Board of School Education chairman Pawan Kumar and secretary Munish Nagpal said the test had been conducted successfully and distributed sweets as a celebration. According to the Board, on July 30, 1 lakh candidates sat for the PGT Level 3 exam. On Thursday, two tests were conducted. While 1.67 lakh candidates sat for TGT Level 2 exam, 66,000 candidates appear for the PRT Level 1 exam, said Kumar. During a press conference, Kumar said the results would be declared in Aug third week. "Candidates can file objections against the answer key from Aug 1 to 3. A fee of Rs 1,000 per question has been set for objections, but if a challenge is found to be valid, not only will the candidate receive full marks for that question, but the objection fee will also be refunded," said Kumar. The board released the answer key five minutes after the last exam was finished.
