India seeking energy, lithium investments in Argentina
Secretary V.L. Kantha Rao visited Buenos Aires for the first in-person meeting with Argentine counterparts since the two countries tied up a preliminary agreement in 2022 on mineral exploration, critical minerals supply and technology development.
Indian state firms Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL) and Coal India (COAL.NS), opens new tab, along with private company Greenko, are already exploring lithium in Argentina's northwest province of Catamarca, on the border with Chile.
"We hope that in the next six months there will be a new announcement," Rao told Reuters at an event at the Indian embassy in Argentina on Tuesday, where he added that there is interest in other nearby provinces such as Salta.
India, a major greenhouse gas emitter, is securing key minerals in resource-rich nations like Australia, Argentina, and Chile. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has identified 30 critical minerals, including lithium, for its clean energy push.
"India has a very ambitious plan to transition many vehicles to electric. We aim to convert 30% of our vehicles by 2030," India's ambassador to Argentina, Dinesh Bhatia, told Reuters.
Indian officials, who will visit Catamarca and meet Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo, touted potential benefits from the Latin American nation's so-called Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI), which offers tax benefits for investments over $200 million.
"We want a stable (framework), not one that changes every five years," Rao told reporters. "Right now, policies are investment-friendly, and companies are coming."
Argentina, the world's fourth-largest lithium exporter, is part of the "lithium triangle" with Chile and Bolivia. President Javier Milei is pushing deregulation to attract investment and ease a prolonged economic crisis.
India is also eyeing investments in Argentina's copper, gold, gas and oil resources. Last week, Argentina's state-controlled oil firm YPF (YPFDm.BA), opens new tab signed a memorandum of understanding with three Indian companies for potential liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.

LIMA, July 3 (Reuters) - Peruvian President Dina Boluarte will double her salary to the equivalent of some $10,000 per month, angering many Peruvians who said the money would be better spent on alleviating poverty. The economy minister announced late on Wednesday that the salary of Boluarte - whose approval ratings are among the lowest of any leader worldwide - had been increased to 35,568 soles ($10,067), about 30 times higher than Peru's minimum wage. The president's salary had previously been fixed at 15,600 soles ($4,400), a level introduced in 2006 when former President Alan Garcia reduced it from 42,000 soles. The minister said the salary hike had already been approved by the cabinet and should come into effect immediately. The government justified the increase by saying that compared with 12 counterparts across Latin America, her prior pay ranked 11th, above only that of the Bolivian president. Reuters could not determine the accuracy of the government's ranking, but an evaluation by the Rio Times last year showed Latin American presidents' salaries ranging between $3,000 and $22,000, averaging at around $9,600. However, Peruvians that Reuters spoke to were not impressed. "It's a joke," pensioner Rolando Fonseca said outside a newspaper stand in the capital Lima. "There is extreme poverty all over Peru and the president needs to set an example." Peru's economy has rebounded over the past two years, following a recession triggered by anti-government protests early in Boluarte's term. However, poverty rates, which worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, remain close to 30%. Boluarte is set to finish her term in July 2026, after presidential elections scheduled for next April. "She is about to leave and there is no need for her to increase her salary, she should be helping hospitals and sick children," said Carmen Juarez, a Lima housewife. Boluarte came to power in late 2022 after her predecessor Pedro Castillo was removed and arrested after attempting to dissolve Congress. Her approval ratings hover around 2% to 4%, according to recent polls by Datum and Ipsos Peru. She has faced accusations of corruption, including allegations of illicit enrichment involving Rolex watches. She was also investigated over her role in overseeing the police and military reaction to the anti-government protests, in which over 50 people died. Boluarte, 63, denies any wrongdoing. Repeated efforts to impeach Boluarte have been stymied by conservative political parties that support her. Peru has had six presidents since 2018, and three are currently behind bars. Opposition lawmaker Jaime Quito said he plans to promote an initiative in Congress to annul the pay rise. "This is a mockery to a country that is facing such serious problems," he said. The company said that it could cause engine damage or complete failure, increasing the risk of crash. The recall includes the 2021-2024 Rogue, 2019-2020 Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 and 2022 Infiniti QX55. All vehicles have either a three-cylinder, 1.5 litre or four-cylinder, two litre variable compression turbo engine. A majority of the recalled motors are the 2021-2024 Nissan Rogues. Nissan said in its announcement on the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website: "The engine bearings may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure." The company said dealers will inspect the engine oil pan for metal debris and, if needed, repair or replace the engine for free. For vehicles with a three-cylinder, 1.5 litre VC-Turbo engine, if no debris is found during an inspection, dealers will replace the oil pan gasket, engine oil and reprogram the engine control module. And dealers will replace the engine oil on the four-cylinder engines if no debris is found. Nissan plans to notify dealers in the US starting from July 15 and drivers from August 25. This comes as the struggling car brand has reportedly asked to delay payments to suppliers in a bid to free up funds. The company's new CEO has already confirmed it will be axing hundreds of jobs at a UK factory after reporting £4 billion in losses in the last financial year. Nissan's Sunderland factory will axe 250 jobs as part of a "voluntary leave scheme". He said: 'We have found big changes on the business side because people used to come so often, but because of things like the economy and the cost of living crisis it is getting harder for everyone, so we don't see people coming every week like before. 'Especially after Covid it is all completely changed. Business is getting harder as well, but still, we're trying our best to carry on.' But Sayad said he 'hopes to be doing it all again in 20 years time'.
