'He has got everything, but a lot to learn'

BBC News30-04-2025
Former Brighton striker Warren Aspinall spoke to BBC Radio Sussex's Albion Unlimited podcast about midfielder Carlos Baleba: "He's got amazing attributes. For a young player, he's got everything. What frustrates me is that when he plays, it's like he's playing with his mates in the park. He knows he can switch it on and off whenever he wants."He sometimes gets caught out and Lewis [Dunk] has to be on to him. He's got a lot of things to learn because you have to be disciplined in that position. His pace has got him out of trouble on a couple of occasions. On his goal against West Ham: "The bend on it was incredible - he's got that goal in his locker. He's clever, he bent it round the defender and used him as a wall so that the keeper couldn't see the ball. It was a wonderful strike."Listen to the full podcast here on BBC Sounds

Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour has the skillset to play for Manchester City under Pep Guardiola - but he should stay at Napoli, according to Pat Nevin. Gilmour made the move from Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League to Italian side Napoli last summer. Alongside fellow Scotland internationalist Scott McTominay, he went on to win the Serie A title - only the fourth Scudetto in Gli Azzurri's history. And while former Scotland internationalist Nevin reckons the 24-year-old would thrive at a possession-based club such as Man City, he is better off staying in Naples. Billy Gilmour has excelled since moving to Napoli. | Getty Images 'Billy was playing for Chelsea when he was 18, playing against Liverpool and looking like the best player on the field,' said Nevin. 'Then he doesn't get his chance. 'He moves to Norwich, a team that wasn't suited to him. Then he goes to Brighton, finally a place that suits him, and they loved him and he was doing really, really well. But he didn't suit the way they were buying and selling so they moved him again. 'Honestly I do think if you stuck him in the centre of Manchester City's midfield he'd be fine. He's good enough. He can do that technically with his quality. If you're winning the scudetto, if you're getting lauded the way he and Scott McTominay are, I would be staggered (if he left). I think he'd look towards Spain if he were to move. I think that would suit Billy down to the ground. And I think he'd love them there. 'People that don't watch Napoli or Scotland sometimes roll their eyes and think it's just a Scottish guy. He plays against some of the best players in the world and he outshines them quite regularly.' Speaking to Nevin added: 'The downside is he's not going to score you any goals and he's not massively creative either. But he controls games. That control in games is massively important for certain types of teams.

Premier League manager shows off outrageous skills in training session as his club prepare for pre-season friendlies

A Premier League manager pulled off an impressive piece of skill during his club's training session ahead of their first pre-season fixture. The coach in question was seen showing off his kick-ups and tricks in a video posted to TikTok by the club he is in charge of. A player can then be heard speaking to the videographer in the background, saying: 'Admin, this is some quality content'. The video has since garnered huge traction on the platform, with over 100,views and 12,000 likes since it was uploaded on Sunday afternoon. It showed none other than Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler flexing his twinkled-toed ability with a football. Hurzeler, took over at the Amex Stadium last summer, making him the youngest-ever Premier League manager in history when he was appointed at the age of 31. Reacting to the video in the comments section, many users were quick to point out his age in comparison to some of his players. One user wrote: 'Virgil [van Dijk] and [Harry] Maguire are both older'. A second added: 'Remember he's younger than some of our players'. Another remarked: 'The other mangers aren't younger than James Milner'. A further comment read: 'Fabian Hurzeler is bringing some serious skills to the table!' Hurzeler was part of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich's academy as a youngster - spending eight years there and making 36 league appearances for their second team. However, he effectively ended his own professional playing career aged 22 as he only played for amateur sides in Germany afterwards. His career in management began in 2016 as a player-coach with FC Pipinsried, who he managed to promote in his first season. After being named assistant coach of St. Pauli in 2020, he was named their head coach in December 2022. Having won promotion to the Bundesliga with the club two seasons ago, he was named as Roberto De Zerbi successor on the South Coast. Following an eight-placed finish in his first campaign in charge, Brighton begin their pre-season for 2025-26 on Monday evening, as they face Spanish side Las Palmas.
