Murder suspects in early morning escape from custody
At about 5.35am, murder suspects Patrick Mbombi, Thabo Moye Makgopa and Javas Mongwe allegedly overpowered officers on duty and fled on foot, Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said.

Maake police launch manhunt after prisoner escape
LIMPOPO – Maake Police have launched a manhunt for 29-year-old Mola Matome Reuben Modiba, who escaped from police custody on Monday afternoon (June 30). Modiba was awaiting trial in connection with a burglary at a residential property, reported in April this year. He had just been formally charged by a detective when he allegedly fled while being escorted back to the holding cells. The circumstances surrounding the escape are currently under investigation. Co-operate with forensic investigation or face the music, Cogta MEC tells Msunduzi municipality
KwaZulu-Natal co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has warned Msunduzi municipality to co-operate with his investigation into their finances or face the consequences. Buthelezi launched forensic investigations into Msunduzi, Nongoma and KwaDukuza municipalities in March after allegations of fraud and corruption and in the wake of the auditor-general's findings. 'While investigations at KwaDukuza and Nongoma are at an advanced stage, the Msunduzi municipality has refused to co-operate with the investigation,' Buthelezi said on Tuesday. He has written to the Msunduzi municipality, placing it on terms to co-operate or face the consequences of non-co-operation with a statutory investigation. 'We are resolute in our commitment to enforcing good governance and accountability in all KZN municipalities and will not hesitate to act without fear or favour in the interest of residents and ratepayers.' Buthelezi said his action is mandated by the Municipal Systems Act, which stipulates an MEC is obliged to conduct an investigation after maladministration, fraud and corruption allegations. Auditor-general Tsakani Maluleke found R6bn in unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure in several municipalities. Buthelezi said the investigations will specifically address allegations of abuse of municipal assets, elevated levels of political instability, political interference in procurement processes, deficiencies in consequence management, contraventions of supply chain management regulations, irregularities in recruitment procedures, maladministration, fraud and corruption. Nongoma municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal is plagued by allegations of corruption which resulted in the recent arrest of mayor Mshangane Ndabandaba, his deputy Sabelo Nkosi and speaker Babongile Sithole. All are out on R5,000 bail. In KwaDukuza, mayor Ali Ngidi was accused of using the mayoral back-up van to take his children to school. Despite several interventions including placing it under administration several years ago, Msunduzi continues to fall short of financial protocols. The municipality told TimesLIVE it would comment later.

Police seek leads after a man was brutally murdered near Beitbridge port of entry

Image: Phill Magakoe Police at Musina have launched a manhunt following the discovery of the body of a murdered man in bushes behind the Limpopo truck park near the Beitbridge port of entry. The brutal murder was reported on Monday, according to provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba. 'Police responded to the scene and, upon arrival, discovered the lifeless body of an African male with multiple gunshot wounds to the head. A projectile was recovered at the scene,' said Ledwaba. Police said the motive for the brutal murder is currently unknown, and the killers are still at large. 'The deceased was found wearing white All Star sneakers, blue jeans, black Hemisphere tracksuit top, RJ brown belt, and a black Uzzi sporty that was also found lying on the ground next to the body,' said Ledwaba. 'At this stage, the identity of the deceased is unknown, but he is believed to be a Zimbabwean national aged between 35 and 40.' Police in Limpopo are appealing to members of the community to assist in identifying the deceased or providing any information that may lead to the arrest of the killers. 'Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the investigating officer, Captain Moloko Setjie at 082 565 7889, nearest police station or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111. Alternatively, information may be shared via the My SAPS App and can be provided anonymously,' said Ledwaba. Earlier, IOL reported that a 40-year-old Limpopo man, Lesiba David Ledwaba, made his initial appearance before the Seshego Magistrate's Court on Monday, accused of killing his 87-year-old mother. Lesiba Ledwaba was arrested following the brutal murder of his octogenarian mother in Sebora Village, in the Mashashane policing precinct. In court, the case was postponed to 9 July 2025 for a formal bail application. Colonel Ledwaba, said the murder incident was discovered on Saturday afternoon. 'Police on the afternoon of Saturday, 28 June 2025, responded to the complaint of a missing person from a neighbour who was worried that the 87-year-old was not seen for over two days,' he said. After receiving the report, police officers immediately went to the home of the missing 87-year-old woman. 'Upon investigation, they were met by a very disturbing scene, where they discovered the woman's dismembered body parts placed inside the plastic buckets,' said Ledwaba. Several items that were allegedly used in the brutal murder were also found at the scene.
