Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend Diogo Jota's funeral to avoid overshadowing the service. Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash.
Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend the funeral of Diogo Jota on Saturday, despite being teammates with him on the Portugal national team.
Jota, 27, and his brother André Silva were laid to rest at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar near Porto, after both tragically died in a car crash in Spain earlier this week.
The ceremony drew a large turnout, including Jota's Liverpool teammates, Portuguese national team members, and former Wolves colleagues. Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson were seen carrying red floral tributes into the church, while Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Ruben Neves were present inside the Chapel of the Resurrection.
Ruben Neves, who shared the pitch with Jota for both Wolves and Portugal, helped carry the coffin, having flown in from the United States after playing in the Club World Cup for Al-Hilal.
Ronaldo, Portugal's captain, was not among the mourners.
Why Cristiano Ronaldo Did Not Attend Jota's Funeral?
As per a report in the English media, Cristiano Ronaldo chose to stay away out of concern that his presence in the small town of Gondomar could overshadow the service. He has been staying out of the public eye in recent days, spending time privately with his family.
Cristiano Ronaldo did post a heartfelt message on social media – 'It doesn't make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you."
Also in attendance were Liverpool players Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo, Darwin Núñez, and Federico Chiesa, along with manager Arne Slot. Former Reds Caoimhín Kelleher, Jordan Henderson, and James Milner also paid their respects.
Jota and his brother lost their lives early Thursday morning when their Lamborghini veered off the road in north-west Spain and caught fire. A private wake was held on Friday, attended by Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, whom he had married just weeks earlier, and close family members.

Bumrah will definitely return to India's 11 in Lord's: Shubman Gill

India, after going down in the first Test against England in Leeds, came back all guns blazing in the second Test at Edgbaston as they won the match by an incredible 336 runs to level the series 1-1. Indian skipper Shubman Gill led from the front by scoring 269 runs in the first innings and 161 runs in the second innings to script India's first-ever Test win over England at Edgbaston. He was also named Man of the Match for his efforts. Gill, while receiving his Player of the Match award after the match, answered one of the biggest questions all Indian fans were thinking about. Gill confirmed that ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah will make his return to India's playing XI at Lord's for the third Test match starting Thursday, July 10. Notably, Bumrah was rested for the second match to manage his workload, and Akash Deep — who took 10 wickets in the match — was named his replacement. First innings total helped While talking about the match, Gill said that the team knew that despite the wicket at Edgbaston favouring batters, a score of 400 or 500 runs would keep them in the game. India scored 587 runs in the first innings and 427 runs in the second innings to hand England a huge target of 608 to win, which the English team failed to chase and crumbled for just 271. He was moving the ball both ways Gill also showered praise on his bowlers, especially Akash Deep, who was India's highest wicket-taker in the match with match figures of 10 for 187. Gill said, 'He (Akash Deep) hit the right lengths and was getting the ball to move both ways, which was difficult on a pitch like this. He was magnificent for us.' Gill also praised other bowlers and credited them for removing the English top order early in both innings. England lost their first five wickets on 84 in the first innings and on 85 in the second. Gill also acknowledged Prasidh Krishna by saying that even though the pacer did not get many wickets in the game, he was hitting the right line and was providing much-needed support to the other two pacers.

ENG vs IND 2nd Test: India scripts historic first-ever win at Edgbaston

Shubman Gill has finally tasted success as India's red-ball captain for the first time after a historic outing with the bat in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. His bowlers delivered right on time as they won the game by 336 runs to secure their first-ever win at this venue. India have levelled the series at 1-1 and will have a three-day rest before taking the field at Lord's for the third Test. First innings The match started with England once again winning the toss and opting to field first. Their trick worked as India lost their first wicket on just 15 runs in the form of KL Rahul (2), but then Karun Nair (31) went on to add 80 runs for the second wicket with Jaiswal before losing his wicket. Yashasvi Jaiswal then went on to score 87 and added 66 for the third with stand-in skipper Gill before missing yet another century against England. India then lost Rishabh Pant (25) and Nitish Reddy cheaply, but skipper Shubman Gill (269) played a marathon, record-breaking innings and stitched crucial partnerships with Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42) to power India to 587 runs in the innings. Shoaib Bashir, with three wickets, was England's best bowler in the innings. Second innings England's first innings can be described in three words: collapse, record, collapse. The hosts lost their first five wickets for just 84 before Jamie Smith (184 not out) and Harry Brook (158) went on to add 303 runs for the sixth wicket to get England back in the game. But India hit back hard and went on to take the rest of the English wickets while conceding just 20 more runs, as the hosts were all out for 407—giving India a big lead of 180 runs. Siraj was India's best bowler with six wickets, while Akash Deep got four wickets to his name. Third innings In their second innings, India once again came all guns blazing, with Shubman Gill again at the centre. Gill went on to score 161 runs and once again stitched crucial partnerships with KL Rahul (55), Rishabh Pant (65) and Ravindra Jadeja (69 not out) to take India to 427 for 6 before declaring the innings and setting a mammoth 608-run target for England to chase. Fourth innings England's second innings started almost the same way as the first, as Akash Deep struck twice and Siraj also took one to quickly reduce them to 50 for 3. England tried to rebuild with Ollie Pope (24) and Harry Brook (23), but Akash Deep once again struck to remove both batters as England lost five wickets for just 83. Ben Stokes (33) added 70 runs for the sixth wicket in an attempt to push the match towards a draw, but Washington Sundar removed him to put India right back on top. Chris Woakes (7) was next to depart off Krishna as India continued to inch towards the win. Akash Deep then removed Jamie Smith (88) to complete his five-wicket haul. Jadeja was the next bowler to add a wicket to his name after dismissing Josh Tongue for 2. Finally, Akash Deep removed Brydon Carse (38) to finish the English innings on 271 and hand India a historic 336-run win.
