Boston man in bid to win UK's strongman crown
A National Grid worker from Lincolnshire is taking part in the final of the UK's Strongest Man contest this weekend.Dean Mason, from Boston, will be competing against 15 others in the televised competition in Nottingham.Events include a 12-tonne truck pull, bending a metal bar and carrying a 310lb (140kg) sack three times over a 27-yard (25m) course.Mr Mason, who works as a cable jointer, credits working outdoors as helping with his training.
The 35-year-old began his career just after the Covid outbreak when his gym installed some strongman equipment."I had a play and fell in love with it," he said.He entered his first competition in 2021 and soon won Boston's Strongest Man, before working his way up to national competitions.Weighing 25 stone (about 160kg), Mr Mason's preparation for the three-day event involves consuming 7,000 calories a day, with a breakfast including eight eggs.He said winning the event would "be amazing" and added: "I'm just going to enjoy it and give it my all."I never expected to get to this level as it is, so to be crowned the UK's strongest man is like the ultimate dream."Mr Mason's supporters from Boston will be at the event at the Motorpoint Arena.Listen to highlights from Lincolnshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North or tell us about a story you think we should be covering here.

June 28 - Jose Berrios tossed seven scoreless innings to lead the visiting Toronto Blue Jays to a 9-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. Toronto doubled its lead in the second on Bo Bichette's RBI single that drove in Ernie Clement, and it was 3-0 after Clement's two-out single scored Springer in the third. In the seventh, Addison Barger scored on Alejandro Kirk's double to extend the lead to 4-0 before Gimenez drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Guerrero to stretch Toronto's advantage to 5-0. Toronto's four-run eighth featured an RBI single by Springer, a sacrifice fly by Myles Straw and a two-run single by Gimenez. Boston Legacy name Filipa Patao as first head coach
June 27 - Boston Legacy FC named Filipa Patao as the NWSL expansion club's first head coach. Patao, 36, coached Benfica in her native Portugal from 2020-25, compiling a 156-28-15 record in all competitions. She led Benfica to five consecutive league titles and was nominated for Ballon d'or Coach of the Year in 2024. Patao will join Boston in July once her visa is approved to begin preparations for the club's 2026 debut. "I'm very excited about going to Boston. I can't wait to get to the city, meet all the people, and start working," Patao said in a team release on Wednesday. "The American league is extremely competitive -- and that's one of the reasons I accepted this project. ‘Delighted' Premier League club gets green light for 35,000-seater stadium redevelopment with stand to be demolished
NOTTINGHAM FOREST have been given the green light for a major stadium redevelopment which will see a stand get demolished. Forest put forward plans to their local council this week expressing their desire to bulldoze and rebuild the Peter Taylor stand. 4 4 The huge project costs around £130million — up £36m from its original estimates in 2019. And Forest's plans have now been approved by Rushcliffe Borough Council, allowing the club to move forward with building work. They will now rip down the Peter Taylor Stand and replace it with a new 10,000-seater terrace coming in at 38m high. That will boost the City Ground's capacity from 30,000 seats to 35,000. And it will also inject £13million a year into the local economy by creating hundreds of new jobs. Forest revealed their 'delight at the news' in a statement on Friday. They added: 'We look forward to working closely with our partners on the next steps and will provide a further update in due course.' The rebuild comes at a perfect time for Forest, who defied expectations to qualify for the Conference League last season. The City Ground has seen multiple improvements since it opened in 1898, with the last of five rebuilds taking place in 1996. But once work is done on the new stand, Forest plan on another expansion. The longer-term plan is to develop the Bridgford Stand, eventually taking the City Ground's capacity to 40,000.
