97,000 persons convicted in UP under 'operation conviction' since 2023
"Launched on July 1, 2023, Operation Conviction has proven to be a game-changer, leading to the conviction of 97,158 criminals between July 2023 and mid-June," ADG prosecution Deepesh Juneja said.
Juneja said of the 1,14,029 identified cases, 74,388 cases were disposed of.
Under the campaign, 68 accused persons were sentenced to death, 8,172 received life imprisonment, 1,453 were sentenced to over 20 years, and 87,465 were given up to 20 years' imprisonment.
The data showed the government's commitment to delivering swift and decisive justice, particularly in cases involving serious crimes, he added.
Targeting organised crime, the statement said, 395 accused were convicted in 272 cases involving the top 10 criminals.
When it came to crack down on the mafia, 29 of the 69 identified mafias were convicted, reaffirming that the crackdown was not limited to petty offenders, the statement added.
The campaign was stated to have also delivered results in cases of crimes against children as reflected from 17 accused being sentenced to death under the POCSO Act which included three such punishments in a month and 619 persons being handed out life imprisonment.
Of the 68 death penalties, 17 were under POCSO, 48 for heinous crimes, and the rest in other cases.
On average, 143 identified cases were resolved, and 187 criminals convicted each working day, it said.

NAGPUR: Saying 'I love you' does not amount to sexual harassment unless accompanied by conduct suggesting sexual intent, Bombay high court's Nagpur bench ruled Monday while overturning a 2017 conviction under the Pocso Act . Justice Urmila JoshiPhalke acquitted a 25-yearold man from Katol in Nagpur district, nearly eight years after he was sentenced to three years' rigorous imprisonment for harassing a 17year-old girl. He appealed the session court verdict in HC and was out on bail. 'If somebody says that he is in love with another person or expresses his feelings that in itself would not amount to an intent showing some sort of sexual intention' the judge said in her order. 'Words expressed as 'I love you' would not by themselves amount to 'sexual intent' as contemplated by the legislature,' she added. The case dated back to Oct 2015, when a class 11 student accused the man of stopping her and her cousin , grabbing her hand and saying: 'I love you'. Based on her complaint, police charged him under sections 354A (sexual harassment) and 354D (stalking) of IPC, along with Section 8 of Pocso Act. Two years later, the sessions court convicted him. His counsel Sonali Khobragade said his actions did not meet the legal threshold for sexual assault or stalking as there was no repeated contact or physical act indicating sexual intent. Justice Joshi-Phalke agreed. 'There should be something more that must suggest the real intention is to introduce the angle of sex…,' she said. 'The offence under Pocso Act is not made out as there is no allegation that the accused touched the girl with sexual intent.' Youth gets 20 yrs RI in POCSO case
Kurnool: In a significant verdict, the Special POCSO Court in Kurnool district has sentenced a 21-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl. The accused, Sheikh Chand Basha, a daily wage worker from Amaravati Nagar in Adoni town, was also fined Rs 25,000 by the court. The judgment was delivered on Tuesday by Special POCSO Court Judge E Rajendra Babu. In case of failure to pay the fine, the convict will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment. The case was registered on February 7, 2021, at Pattikonda UPS police station, following a complaint by the minor girl's mother. Based on her statement, a case was booked under Sections 366(A), 376(2)(i)(n) of the IPC and Sections 6 r/w 17 of the POCSO Act, 2012. The then DSP of Dhone, Y Srinivasa Reddy, led the investigation and filed a detailed charge sheet before the court, leading to a swift and conclusive trial. Kurnool district superintendent of police Vikrant Patil commended the police team for their effective handling of the case. The SP noted that the verdict stands as a strong message to those committing heinous crimes against women and children, reinforcing the strength of the justice system and the importance of timely prosecution.

Tamil Nadu cop booked for sexual assault of minor girl
CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Police have registered a Pocso Act case against an armed reserve (AR) sub inspector (SI) based on the statement of an eight-year-old girl. Meanwhile, after the SI's family filed a complaint against the girl's family stating that the complaint against the SI was false, a CSR has been registered, a police officer said. According to the complaint from the minor girl's family, the girl was living with her father and grandfather after her parents' separation. She was found unconscious at the SI's house on Sunday evening after she went missing while playing with friends. The complaint adds that a friend told the family she was last seen near the SI's house. The girl alleged she was drugged and sexually assaulted. Meanwhile, a senior police officer said the complaint may be linked to an ongoing dispute with the SI. He added that even though there seems to be no sexual assault, based on initial reports, a case has been registered as the child has given a statement.
