Illegal occupation inside Nagarahole tiger reserve; tribals demand land rights
A similar incident had happened six years ago in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve where tribals and others entered the forest seeking rights over forest land. Now the tribals who were relocated under the voluntary tribal relocation programme are seeking rights over forest land along with those who are already staying inside the forest. The Nagarahole Adivasi Janma- Pale Hakku Sthapane Samithi held a meeting on last Saturday and told media in Bengaluru that they wanted cancellation of the Forest Rights Act and the tribal relocation programme.
They also demanded implementation of the recent orders issued by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to provide all facilities (including road, water, electricity and other facilities) to dwellers staying inside forests. A forest official in Nagarahole said: 'We were unable to get out of the forest or call for more forces as we were gheraoed on Monday. We were unable to contact the police and the forest department head office on Monday. On late Tuesday evening when the message was relayed, help came in. But the police are not clearing the people. We also do not have the sufficient man-power to remove them forcefully.'
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Subhash B Malkhade, said: 'The tribals want their rights to be settled. But they are not forest dwellers. They have come from outside. The issue is not with the forest department alone. There are sub-committees at the gram, district and taluk levels which has to look into the rights of the tribals along with the Tribal Development Department'.
Despite repeated attempts, TNIE could not get a comment from the Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department.

Bengaluru: In a move to quell protests, industries minister MB Patil Sunday said the govt will announce a higher compensation package for the 1,777 acres of land that was notified for a defence and aerospace park in Channarayapatna hobli, Devanahalli taluk. The land acquisition process has sparked vociferous opposition, with prominent voices such as actor Prakash Raj publicly backing protesting farmers in Devanahalli. Patil told reporters that a key meeting scheduled for Tuesday with chief minister Siddaramaiah will determine the govt's final decision on the matter. "In a democracy, farmers have the right to protest land acquisition," Patil said. "But the govt will also try and take everyone along. The CM will take a final decision on Tuesday. Patil also took aim at certain activists and intellectuals who have supported farmers' protests, revealing that "one" of them had previously approached the govt seeking help with land conversion for 400 acres of own land. "A person who does not have land or stakes in the protest, is not an important person; it is the farmer who owns the land who is important," Patil said. "We will not force anyone. I know the facts of the case and those who are protesting the acquisition. We will discuss the entire thing once again on Tuesday and the CM will announce his final decision."

Devanahalli land row: Prominent personalities seek intervention of Congress high command
Ahead of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's July 15 meeting with Devanahalli farmers who are seeking shelving of land acquisition, 65 prominent personalities, including historian Ramachandra Guha and writer Devanur Mahadeva, have sought immediate intervention of the Congress high command to provide justice to farmers. In an open letter to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, the prominent personalities have appealed to him to act with urgency and foresight to ensure that the Government of Karnataka honours its word and stands by farmers who are demanding that process of acquisition of 1,777 acres of land in 13 villages of Channarayapatna hobli in Devanahalli taluk for the proposed aerospace park be shelved. 'This is the moment to stand not only with the people — but for the principles they entrusted you to uphold,' said these personalities who include environmentalist N. Yellappa Reddy, theatre artists B. Jayashree and Arundhati Nag, agricultuiral economist Prakash Kammaradi, progressive writer Vijayamma, and film-maker Girish Kasaravalli besides a host of former Vice-Chancellors. They expressed concern over some people in the government voicing apprehensions that meeting the farmers' demands may hinder development or drive industries to neighbouring States. 'This narrative appears to be paving the way for delays or a possible retreat from the commitment (made before the Assembly elections to farmers that their land acquisition will be shelved). Such backtracking will not only erode the credibility of the State government, but seriously damage the Congress party's standing among rural and agrarian communities,' they warned. 'Ahead of the July 15 meeting with farmers, we urge the Karnataka government to initiate inclusive consultations — including industry leaders — to evolve a comprehensive, transparent, and balanced land acquisition and industrial land use policy,' they said. Pointing out that 163 affected farmers belong to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and much of this land was granted to them under land reform schemes, they argued that such land cannot be acquired or transferred without special permissions and protections. Circumventing these would violate constitutional guarantees and the spirit of social justice, they contended.

'Not Intimated Earlier': Siddaramaiah Wants Bridge Inauguration Postponed
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday urged Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari to postpone the inauguration of Sigandur bridge and the foundation stone laying ceremony of infrastructure projects at Sagara taluk in Shivamogga on July 14, stating that he was not "intimated" in advance. Citing his scheduled visit to Indi taluk in Vijayapura district, the Chief Minister in a letter to Mr Gadkari said, it would have been more appropriate for MoRTH to have consulted with the state government before scheduling such a programme, and requested him to instruct the officials in this regard. "It has come to my notice that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways along with National Highway Authority of India is organising "Dedication to Nation and Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony" Programme on 14th of July, 2025 in Nehru Field, Sagara Taluk, Shivamogga District, and my name has also been printed in the draft invitation card. However, I have not been intimated about this programme in advance," Siddaramaiah said in his letter. Noting that an inauguration programme of various developmental schemes is already scheduled under his Chairmanship in Indi taluka of Vijayapura district on the same day, he said it would have been more appropriate for MoRTH to have consulted with the state government before scheduling the state-level programmes. "Therefore, I request you to instruct the department to coordinate with the state government while organising such programmes. Also, I request you to postpone this programme and provide me with a couple of dates convenient to you, so that I would be able to join you in this significant state-level programme," he added. Mr Gadkari is scheduled to inaugurate "Sigandur Bridge", which is said to be India's second-longest cable-stayed bridge between Ambaragodlu-Kalasavalli in Sagara taluk on Monday. The bridge has been built at a cost of Rs 473 crore and is 2.44 km long, official sources said. Earlier in the day, Shivamogga district in-charge Minister Madhu Bangarappa told reporters, "I have not got an invitation officially, there is some confusion. I feel that the Chief Minister has been disrespected by the central government...." Sagara Congress MLA Belur Gopalakrishna said he too has not got any invitation and has no information. He also hit out at Shivamogga BJP MP BY Raghavendra for making it a party event.
