Bessie Carter 'doesn't care' she's accused of being a nepo baby

Perth Now25-05-2025
Bessie Carter doesn't consider herself to be a 'nepo baby'.
The 31-year-old actress - who is the daughter of actors Dame Imelda Staunton and Jim Carter - has brushed off suggestions that she's a so-called 'nepo baby', insisting she's not used her parents' fame and success to further her career.
Speaking to The Independent, Bessie explained: "I have a lot of drive to make stuff happen myself, instead of waiting for the phone to ring."
The actress - who plays Prudence Featherington on the hit Netflix series 'Bridgerton' - insists that she's worked hard for her success.
She reflected: "Some people might use that phrase (nepo baby), but I don't really care. I believe in myself and my trajectory being what it is, and I've never used my parents, ever, to get any work."
Despite this, Bessie still enjoys working in the same industry as her mother.
She said: "It's really nice when I'm in hair and makeup and the makeup artist says, 'I worked with your mum.' Who wouldn't like that?"
Imelda has enjoyed a hugely successful career, starring on stage and screen for decades. But Bessie only became truly aware of her mother's success when she was cast in the 'Harry Potter' film franchise.
The actress shared: "Like most children, I grew up reading them and going to the bookshops at midnight, so that was quite exciting."
Meanwhile, Bessie believes the timing of 'Bridgerton's release was one of the keys to its success.
The hit TV show - which is set during the Regency era in England - was released in December 2020, following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Bessie noted that fans were quick to attach themselves to the programme.
The actress - who has starred on the show alongside the likes of Jonathan Bailey and Nicola Coughlan - told the BBC: "It was December 2020, and I believe the world was ready to escape into something that was joyous, hopeful, and had a happy ending. And so ... that's the honest answer.
"I just think it was a delightful thing to look at, and hopefully a bit funny and a bit romantic."

Phil Collins recovering in hospital

Phil Collins is recovering from knee surgery. The 74-year-old musician - who admitted earlier this year that he is "very sick" - was the subject of online rumours last week that he was receiving hospice care, but his representative his confirmed to The Independent that is not the case. Instead, the former Genesis frontman is currently in hospital recuperating after having an operation on his knee. Phil - who has type 2 diabetes and ongoing complications from a 2007 spinal surgery which means he can "barely" hold a drumstick properly anymore - admitted earlier this year his health issues have meant he is no longer interested in playing music. He told MOJO magazine: 'I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore. 'The thing is, I've been sick, I mean very sick.' The In the Air Tonight hitmaker would love to be able to drum again one day, but he devastatingly believes he's 'used up my air miles'. Speaking in the Phil Collins: Drummer First documentary, he said: 'It's still kind of sinking in a bit… I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.' Phil picked up his first set of drumsticks aged five and he says the laborious playing has 'taken its toll' on his hands and legs. He added about his decision to retire: 'If I can't do what I did as well as I did it, I'd rather relax and not do anything. 'If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks then I'll have a crack at it. 'But I just feel like I've used up my air miles.' Phil has suffered for a long time with poor health since he injured a vertebrae in his upper neck while performing in 2009. Two years later, he stepped back from performing due to crippling nerve damage, which rendered him unable to play the drums, before returning in 2015. Promoting Genesis' reunion shows, he previously said: 'I'm kind of physically challenged a bit which is very frustrating because I'd love to be playing up there with my son.'

He also had make-up and a new wardrobe to match Sandler's character. 'When they called and said Happy Gilmore needs a golf swing double, I said say no more,' Mahan wrote. Outback Wrangler Matt Wright pleads not guilty over fatal NT chopper crash

Outback Wrangler's Matt Wright has pleaded not guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice more than three years after a fatal helicopter crash. The reality TV star was charged following the crash that killed co-star Chris 'Willow' Wilson in February 2022. Wearing a light blue shirt and blue jeans, Wright appeared calm when he fronted the Supreme Court in Darwin on Monday. He entered not guilty pleas for three counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice when he was arraigned, kissing his wife during an adjournment. The 2022 crash in remote West Arnhem Land killed Wilson, with pilot Sebastian Robinson also seriously injured. The trial is scheduled to begin on Wednesday and is expected to take four weeks. The trial will hear from about 25 witnesses. Wright rose to fame starring in National Geographic's Outback Wrangler and Netflix series Wild Croc Territory.
