HBO Max top 10 movies — here's the 3 worth watching right now
That's why we regularly comb through Max's top 10 list of most-watched movies to see what's got everyone buzzing, but there's bound to be some duds that don't live up to the hype. So we're highlighting the best of the bunch to help you put your precious streaming time to good use.
Leading the pack this week is Ryan Coogler's must-watch vampire thriller, a blockbuster video game adaptation that kids everywhere are obsessed with, and a powerful documentary from one of TV's greatest detectives.
So without further ado, let's dive into the best three movies in HBO Max's top 10 list.
I'll admit, I was late to the "Sinners" train. But I'm happy to report it's every bit as good as everyone says. Director Ryan Coogler's vampire horror blockbuster feels more like church than a movie; its sound design is so spell-binding and stunningly electric, you can't help but get swept up in the fever. Honestly, maybe it's for the best that I didn't catch this movie in theaters. I'd have been shoutin' down the aisles.
Set in 1930s Mississippi, "Sinners" tells the story of twin brothers (both played by long-time Coogler collaborator Michael B. Jordan), who return to their hometown to convert an abandoned sawmill into a lively juke joint. Opening night is a roaring success, until a gang of vampires crashes the party hellbent on siphoning the talents and vitality of their community. Blending horror and thrills with a cinematic flair and a haunting score, "Sinners" is an absolute must-watch for horror and music fans alike.

Mariska Hargitay is one of television's most beloved detectives, and as it turns out, she's also a gifted storyteller behind the camera. In a deeply personal and emotional documentary, Hargitay turns the lens on her own past, sharing the story of her mother, Hollywood star Jayne Mansfield, who died in a car crash when Hargitay was just three years old.
The film traces Hargitay's journey as she finally confronts a legacy she was once told to avoid, and reclaims her mother's story on her own terms. As she unpacks the carefully crafted image of Mansfield's Hollywood persona, Hargitay shines a light on how the "dumb blonde" facade was a carefully calculated performance. She also uncovers long-buried truths, including revelations about her biological father. The result is a poignant and powerful film, where the honesty and vulnerability of Hargitay and her family resonate with heartbreaking clarity.

Surprising no one, "A Minecraft Movie" is still holding strong in the Max top 10 after Minecraft fever swept the world this summer. Packed with meme-worthy moments, vibrant visuals, and over-the-top characters, this sugar rush of a film could prove delightful or tooth-achingly annoying depending on your tastes.
This chaotic adventure follows a misfit crew (Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen) who stumble through a portal into the blocky, unpredictable Minecraft Overworld. To get home, they'll need to join forces with Steve (Jack Black), a seasoned crafter with a few screws loose who's been stuck there for decades, and put their imagination to the test.

HBO vs. HBO Max: A simple guide to what's what
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. When Last Week Tonight host John Oliver mercilessly mocked his show's parent company Warner Bros. Discovery back in May over the umpteenth name change for HBO's streaming network, it was not only a hilarious bit from the cheeky host about a boneheaded marketing decision — it was also an indicator that the difference between HBO and what's now HBO Max might still be a bit… puzzling, to say the least, to some viewers. With so many names, rebrands, and mergers in the mix over the past few years, it's understandable if you're still not totally clear on what's what. So here's a quick explainer to help straighten it all out. Today's Top Deals XGIMI Prime Day deals feature the new MoGo 4 and up to 42% off smart projectors Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Whenever anyone refers to HBO, they're talking about the legacy cable TV channel that's been around for more than 50 years. It's known for prestige dramas (The Sopranos, Succession), original documentaries, and standup comedy. If you're watching Curb Your Enthusiasm or True Detective, for example, you're watching HBO. And while all HBO shows are also available to stream, the key thing here is that these titles were created for the cable channel first and foremost. If you're watching HBO, in other words, think 'watching TV.' Here's where things can get a little confounding. HBO Max is the streaming platform that launched in 2020 and has gone through multiple branding tweaks, most recently returning to the HBO Max name after a befuddling stint as 'Max.' This streamer includes everything from the HBO TV channel, but also a lot more (hence, the 'Max' in the title). In other words, the name implies HBO supercharged with extra content. HBO Max also includes Warner Bros. movies, some live sports, and originals made exclusively for the streaming platform. Which brings us to one more thing worth clarifying: Here's a distinction that trips people up: It's also important to define releases that are branded as Max Originals, which are shows and movies created specifically for HBO Max. In other words, these have never 'aired' on the HBO cable network. That includes streaming-only titles like The Flight Attendant, Love & Death, and Tokyo Vice. The recent movie Mountainhead from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong is also a Max Original. These are part of the HBO Max library, but technically, they're not HBO releases. I know, I know — it feels like splitting hairs. To wrap up, here's what to know about the key differences between all these terms: If you're watching something branded simply as 'HBO,' it's a TV show or movie that originally aired on the HBO cable network. If it says 'Max Original,' it's exclusive to the streaming service. And HBO Max is the umbrella platform where it all lives, along with a whole lot of other Warner Bros. Discovery content. I'll admit, it's definitely understandable that it can be confusing, still. But at least now, the next time John Oliver throws shade at his own streaming home, you'll be in on the joke. Buying IMAX might be the best way to invest in the movie industry, Jim Cramer says
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday explained why he thinks IMAX has momentum and is a more promising company than others in the movie theater business. "At a time when the movie studios and the movie theaters are struggling, IMAX has tremendous momentum because it's proven to be the best way to sell tickets," he said. "If you're at all inclined to invest in the movie industry, IMAX seems like your best bet." Cramer explained that IMAX's business model is different from many of its peers. Instead of operating its own theaters, the company sells or leases its theater systems to operators like AMC or Regal. IMAX also earns money from ongoing maintenance services. Cramer suggested movie theaters are eager to spend money on IMAX so they can charge moviegoers a premium for those tickets. IMAX beat the estimates when it posted earnings in April, and CEO Richard Gelfond said on the call that it was "our best first quarter ever," raking in more than $300 million in global box office revenue. He said the company signed agreements for over 100 new and upgraded systems year-to-date, compared with 130 in all of 2024. Management also reaffirmed that it's on track to make $1.2 billion in box office receipts this year — which would be a record for the company. Cramer said he was encouraged by IMAX's growing presence abroad, especially in China. Local language films account for more and more of the outfit's business. In 2019, the category comprised 12% of the total global box office and has grown to 68% by 2025, management said. IMAX has also been involved in lucrative domestic films — its theaters delivered 20% of the domestic opening of "Sinners," Gelfond said in April. Cramer pointed out that there are several major films designed specifically for IMAX, including "Mission Impossible — The Final Reckoning," as well as the upcoming installment in the "Avatar" series. The company doesn't seem worried about competition from streamers, Cramer suggested, noting that it has chosen to partner with major players in the field. Netflix's new "Narnia" film will first be released exclusively on IMAX screens, he said. IMAX partnered with Apple for "F1: The Movie," which has become the streamer's highest-grossing theatrical film ever. IMAX is also working on sports content and has produced its own documentaries, Cramer added. Wall Street's expectations are high for IMAX's next quarterly report, which is set to be released later this month, Cramer said. Although he said the stock is "not exactly cheap," the company's growth potential could justify buying some shares now. "So, if you don't have a position in IMAX already but want to, maybe put on a small position before the quarter," he said. "Please wait to see how the report goes. Maybe the stock will pull back and you can buy at a discount." IMAX did not immediately respond to request for comment.
