Experiencing a Tesla in India as EV maker enters market
The Tesla Model 3 was introduced as one of the most affordable offerings in the company's global lineup.
advertisementTesla Model 3: Exterior design and detailsThe Tesla Model 3 was introduced as one of the most affordable offerings in the company's global lineup, which now includes the Model S, Model X, Cybertruck, and, most recently, the Model Y — Tesla's debut model in India. At first glance, the Model 3 may look like a sleek sports car, but in reality, it's a full-fledged sedan. It measures 4,694mm in length, 1,849mm in width, and 1,443mm in height. The front-end design is clean and minimalist, devoid of a traditional grille, a now-common trait amongst electric vehicles. Sleek headlamps are integrated seamlessly into the bodywork, giving the car a futuristic appeal.Lift the bonnet and, unlike conventional cars, there's no engine. Instead, Tesla has cleverly used this space for a compact front trunk, or "frunk", which is surprisingly practical.

In profile, the Model 3 features a sweeping roofline that flows elegantly into the rear, enhancing its coupe-like silhouette. The large BBS alloy wheels add a bold stance, though the low-profile tyres do demand caution on rough Indian roads.Look closely and you'll discover several thoughtful design elements. Cameras embedded in the front fenders are part of the car's comprehensive sensor suite. The doors are pillarless, lending a true sports car vibe, and the B-pillar houses a sensor that unlocks the door with a key card. The flush-fitting door handles add to the aerodynamic styling and are fun to use.Around the back, the sloping design leads to a modest-looking boot, but don't be fooled. Open it up and you'll find generous cargo space. The all-glass roof is another standout feature, stretching across the top and offering an airy, panoramic experience. It's even openable. On the left rear fender sits the charge port. Tap on it and it pops open in a sci-fi-like motion. Inside, you'll find two connectors: one for a standard charger and the other for a Supercharger. The latter can provide up to 277km of range in just 15 minutes — a feature that has made Tesla models highly practical for long-distance travel in markets like the US, UK, and Europe. The good news? Tesla is in the process of building its Supercharger network in India, which is expected to be operational before customer deliveries of the Model Y begin.
All Teslas come with cabins that look smooth and devoid of a plethora of buttons. The Model 3 was no different.
Tesla Model 3: Interiors, space and featuresStep inside the Tesla Model 3, and it quickly becomes clear why this car feels so special. The dashboard is completely devoid of conventional knobs, buttons, or dials. There's no traditional instrument cluster either. Instead, a massive 15-inch touchscreen takes centre stage, serving as the nerve centre of the Model 3.Everything from starting the car (using a key card and code) to adjusting climate settings, navigation, and even gaming is controlled through this intuitive interface. It's an impressive piece of tech that redefines the in-car experience. The centre console features deep storage compartments, twin cupholders, and wireless charging pads for added convenience. The steering wheel includes compact rotary knobs that control various functions, and even the door releases are electrically operated, adding to the futuristic vibe inside the cabin.Tesla Model 3: Rear seat experienceAt the rear, the Tesla Model 3 continues to impress with its flat floor, which ensures ample legroom and added comfort for all three passengers. The absence of a central tunnel means the middle-seat occupant doesn't have to crouch or compromise on space, a rare advantage in most sedans.A standout feature is the expansive glass roof, which floods the cabin with natural light and enhances the sense of space. However, during peak summer months, it can contribute to increased cabin heat, something to keep in mind in a tropical climate.

Tesla Model 3: Powertrain and rangeWhat truly sets the Tesla apart is its powertrain. The Tesla All-Wheel Drive system features two independent electric motors, each with only one moving part, ensuring minimal maintenance and maximum durability. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive setups, Tesla's system digitally controls torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, resulting in superior handling and traction. The Long Range AWD variant we tested delivers an impressive 449bhp and 528Nm of torque. It also boasts a claimed WLTP range of 579km, adding to its practicality for long-distance travel.
The Long Range AWD variant accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in just 4.2 seconds.
advertisementTesla Model 3: The driving experienceThe Tesla Model 3 you see here hasn't been locally manufactured or modified in any way, and that means it demands extra caution over the notoriously sharp speed humps scattered across Indian roads.Driving it through city traffic is an experience in itself. It's almost entertaining to watch how heads turn and curiosity builds around this futuristic machine. But it's out on the open road where the Model 3 truly comes alive. The Long Range AWD variant accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in just 4.2 seconds, and you can instantly feel the surge of torque pushing you back into your seat. It grips the road confidently too, and on Bengaluru's NICE Road, we had quite an engaging drive. That said, those ultra-low-profile tyres demand caution; even a single sharp stone could spell trouble. At the end of the day, the Tesla is, at its core, an electric car like many others. But what sets it apart is the larger-than-life aura Elon Musk and Tesla have built around it. And for that alone, the Model 3 isn't just a car, it's a statement. A true stunner.Subscribe to Auto Today Magazine- EndsMust Watch

10 year yield spikes amid a decline in bets on August rate cut
Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our ETMarkets WhatsApp channel Yields of the 10-year benchmark government security spiked six basis points to 6.37% on Friday, before softening slightly and closing at 6.34%.The spike in yields came after the central bank governor said price stability will be the primary concern for the central bank amid cooling retail inflation, despite Mint Road winning the 'battle' against 10-year yield had closed at 6.31% the previous day.A section of the market started pricing in another rate cut in August after India's retail inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI), hit a six-year low of 2.1%, data released on July 14 change in expectations of the rate cut trajectory also impacted auction of the 10 year paper conducted on Friday, pushing prices below 100 at 99.95, with cut off yield at 6.33%. The auction was for Rs 30,000 crores'When people are not positive about the rate cut next month, why would someone hold the security, they would want to sell,' said a bond trader at a primary dealership. 'There were quite a few people who had priced in a cut in the August policy, but after the interview, markets were not very positive about it,' the trader said.'The battle against inflation is won, but war continues,' RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said at a banking summit organised by the newspaper in Mumbai on Friday. 'Our primary objective is to maintain price stability and we have mentioned that it is not inconsistent with the other objectives we have of growth because that is a prerequisite.'This comes just a few days before the monetary policy committee (MPC) is set to announce its rate decision on August 6. During the last MPC meet, the repo rate was reduced by a larger-than-expected 50 basis points to 5.50%'The rates went up because the market was anyway long, and those positions increased after the inflation data. Maybe because inflation was lower, markets thought that the RBI would be more open to further rate cuts in August. The governor today did not say anything different, but maintained what he has said in his previous encounters,' said a senior bond trader at another primary dealership.

Tesla plans to launch Robotaxis in San Francisco this weekend
Tesla is preparing to launch its robotaxi service in San Francisco as soon as this weekend, Business Insider reported on Friday, citing an internal staff memo. The company's robotaxi business is still in its early stages, having only conducted a controlled test run in Austin, Texas, earlier this year. The geofenced area where the robotaxi service will operate covers a large swath of the Bay Area, including Marin, much of the East Bay, San Francisco and stretching south to San Jose, the report said. The launch timeline has been moved up to as early as Friday and some Tesla owners will receive invites to use the service, according to the report. CEO Elon Musk has shifted Tesla's focus toward robots and self-driving taxis to counter declining sales for the electric automaker's aging vehicle lineup. Meanwhile, The Information reported that Tesla is well behind the pace necessary to meet Musk's goal of producing at least 5,000 of its Optimus humanoid robots this year, having made only a few hundred of them. Reuters could not independently verify the Business Insider and Information reports, while Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the reports. During the earnings call this week, Musk said Tesla is getting regulatory permission to launch robotaxis in several states, including California, Nevada, Arizona and Florida. California regulators told Reuters on Wednesday Tesla had not yet applied for permits needed to pick up and charge passengers for rides in fully autonomous vehicles. Companies need a series of permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Public Utilities Commission to test and deploy autonomous vehicles in the state. The DMV and CPUC did not respond to requests for comment. Regulatory hurdles pose a challenge to Tesla as it must gain the trust of safety officials before launching fully autonomous services. (

Bank of Baroda Q1FY26 results: Net profit up 1.9%, margins compress
Public sector lender Bank of Baroda 's (BoB) net profit rose 1.9 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to Rs 4,541 crore in the first quarter of financial year 2025-26 (Q1FY26), aided by treasury income amid pressure on net interest margin. Sequentially, the net profit fell from Rs 5,048 crore. Net interest income (NII)—the difference between interest earned and interest expended—fell 1.4 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 11,435 crore. Net interest margin (NIM) from domestic operations fell to 2.91 per cent in Q1FY26, down from 3.18 per cent in Q1FY25. 'Pressure on NII will continue to be there for the next quarter because the transition matrix, both on the asset and liability side, will fully realign in the next quarter and Q3 onwards. Banks may experience lower or negative growth in NII because the cost of deposits will take a bit more time to realign,' said Debadatta Chand, managing director and CEO, Bank of Baroda. Other income, including fees, commission, and treasury earnings, expanded by 88 per cent to Rs 4,675 crore in Q1FY26 from Rs 2,487 crore a year ago. Treasury gains increased to Rs 2,226 crore in the first quarter, compared to Rs 295 crore during the same period last year. 'RAM (Retail, Agri, and Micro, Medium, and Small Enterprises) was at 62.7 per cent because the growth in the corporate loan book was very low at 4.2 per cent, which is expected to increase in the subsequent quarter. However, the bank plans to grow RAM to 65 per cent in the next two to three years,' Chand said. The bank's domestic deposits expanded by 8.1 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 12.04 trillion. The share of low-cost deposits—current account and savings account (CASA)—stood at 39.33 per cent in June 2025, down from 40.31 per cent a year ago. Going forward, deposit growth is expected to remain around 9-11 per cent. On the credit front, the guidance for FY26 is 11-13 per cent, said Chand. The asset quality profile improved, with gross non-performing assets (NPAs) declining to 2.28 per cent from 2.88 per cent a year ago. The net NPAs declined to 0.60 per cent from 0.69 per cent in June 2024. The provision coverage ratio (PCR), including those for write-offs, stood at 93.18 per cent in June 2025. The lender's capital adequacy ratio stood at 17.19 per cent, with the common equity tier I (CET-1) at 17.61 per cent. On Friday, the BoB stock closed 1 per cent lower at Rs 243.5 per share on the BSE.
