Egypt: El-Sisi orders airport development push, eyes PPPs for Hurghada airport by end-2025

Arab Finance: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi directed proceeding with the development of airports, in addition to offering Hurghada Airport for public-private partnerships (PPPs) by the end of 2025, Spokesman for the Presidency Mohamed El-Shennawy announced.
During his meeting with Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh El-Hefny and Chairperson of EgyptAir In-Flight Services Soheir Abdullah, El-Sisi reviewed plans to enhance the civil aviation sector in line with the state's objectives to raise the number of tourists to 30 million.
He followed up on the latest developments of air navigation, aircraft fleet, airport upgrades, and enhancement of human resource capabilities.
For his part, El-Hefny outlined the national strategy to involve the private sector in airport operations, based on an agreement signed with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in March 2025.
Scheduled to be completed by the end of summer 2025, the strategy aims to integrate the private sector in the operation and development of Egyptian airports.
This will improve civil aviation performance, boost operational efficiency, enhance service quality for travelers, and attract private investment and high operational expertise to develop 11 major airports, while ensuring these vital assets remain publicly owned.
El-Hefny also touched on the 'New Republic Air Gateway' project, which covers establishing a new passenger terminal as per the latest international standards, with a capacity of no less than 30 million passengers.
Complying with the safety, security, and environmental sustainability standards, the project would raise the airport's annual capacity to more than 60 million passengers.
The development of Egyptian airports falls within the framework of Egypt Vision 2030, which seeks to transform airports into advanced regional hubs operating under the latest global operational systems.
This plan is expected to secure an attractive investment environment that ensures economic feasibility and sustainable development.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the air navigation file, highlighting the international recognition of Egypt's air traffic control system, particularly amid the recent crisis in the Middle East and the closure of airspace in neighboring countries.
These circumstances resulted in a surge in air traffic over Egyptian airspace to more than 1,600 flights daily.
Finally, they discussed EgyptAir's fleet renewal plan, aiming to reach 97 aircraft by fiscal year (FY) 2028/2029, boosting its competitiveness and enhancing the travel experience.

Jordan's economy posts 2.7% growth amid regional challenges

AMMAN — The national economy has posted "positive" indicators in the first third of 2025, with national exports rising by 10.6 per cent to JD2.75 billion, up from JD2.49 billion in the same period last year, according to official data. Foreign reserves at the Central Bank of Jordan reached $22.8 billion by the end of May, sufficient to cover the Kingdom's imports of goods and services for 8.8 months. Inflation remained contained at around 2 per cent during the first five months of the year. The banking sector also saw "notable" growth. Customer deposits rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to JD47.3 billion by the end of April, while credit facilities extended by banks increased by 3.4 per cent to JD35.2 billion. Tourism revenue surged by 15.7 per cent during the first five months of the year, reaching $3.1 billion. Worker remittances rose by 3 per cent in the same period to $1.2 billion. Jordan recorded a GDP growth rate of 2.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, an improvement that economists say marks a gradual but meaningful recovery. "This 2.7 per cent growth is a healthy and positive sign, especially given that the past four years did not see this level of performance," former minister of economy Yousef Mansour said in remarks to the Jordan News Agency, Petra. He noted that the growth represents a half-point increase over the same period last year. Mansour underlined the role of the manufacturing sector as a key driver of growth, and pointed to a slight dip in unemployment, down 0.1 per cent, as an early sign of momentum in the labour market. "Economic growth rarely jumps suddenly unless driven by major external factors," Mansour said, referencing the 2004–2008 influx of Iraqi capital into Jordan. "Achieving 0.5 per cent growth internally, without external stimulus, is a noteworthy accomplishment." Echoing the same remarks, Economist Hussam Ayesh said that the latest figures reflect the economy's resilience, especially in light of ongoing regional instability, including the war in Gaza. "The growth achieved shows that Jordan's economy can absorb shocks and move toward recovery," Ayesh said, adding that the performance sends a 'strong' message to investors about the strength of Jordan's economic policy framework. While he acknowledged that the 2.7 per cent growth figure does not mark a "quantum leap," he said it remains a 'significant' signal amid regional and global uncertainty, particularly in the face of high energy costs and volatile markets. Ayesh also noted robust growth in the agricultural sector, up 8.1 per cent, as well as improvements in the electricity and water sectors. However, he cautioned that tourism, transportation and construction remain weak due to continued geopolitical tensions. Economist Adly Qandah said that the growth figures suggest a gradual recovery in productive sectors, despite ongoing challenges such as gas supply disruptions and regional conflict. He pointed to agriculture and manufacturing, growing by 8.1 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively, as key contributors. Still, he warned that these sectors alone cannot drive structural transformation, especially as labour-intensive industries like tourism and construction remain sluggish. Qandah called for "smart investment policies, real job creation, and innovation stimulation so that growth translates into meaningful change in citizens' lives." Professor of Finance at Al Al-Bayt University Omar Gharaybeh said that the 2.7 per cent growth rate underlines the national economy's flexibility and the success of government policies despite mounting regional pressures. "Jordan's political and monetary stability, combined with sectorial diversity, has helped support economic performance," he said. Growth across agriculture, manufacturing and energy, he added, has reduced dependence on any single sector, making the economy more resilient to external shocks. © Copyright The Jordan Times. UK operators seek to connect rural areas

UK mobile operators are ahead of schedule in their plans to cover 95% of the landmass with 4G as part of a rural connectivity scheme, with attention now shifting to areas marked total not spots (TNS). Along with the landmass targets, companies involved in the Shared Rural Network (SRN) completed projects involving roads and premises which were scheduled for January 2027. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) stated it is now working to address areas completely without coverage based on consultation with relevant communities and interest groups. The TNS plan is mostly focused on Scotland, with priority now being given to popular tourist areas, walking routes and Munros. In a related statement, the SRN organisation explained state aid would be available to operators only when tackling areas 'with no 4G coverage' from any player, with a view to connecting the public, devices, emergency services, and 'rural activities and operations'. The TNS plan proposes constructing 44 new shared masts across northerly and north-westerly areas of the Scottish mainland and islands. Although hailing the SRN progress and refreshed TNS targets, the DSIT conceded the latest plan involves building fewer masts in Scotland than originally envisaged, though emphasised the current strategy focuses on popular tourist destinations. The DSIT emphasised any new masts would still 'go through the proper planning processes' and be 'considerate to areas of natural beauty', local history and ecology. Emirates launches inaugural flight to China's tech hub Shenzhen

Emirates launched its inaugural flight to Shenzhen on Tuesday, marking the carrier's entry into China 's fourth-largest city. Senior delegation from the Dubai airline, including Orhan Abbas, senior vice president for commercial operations in the Far East, was on board. Departing Dubai International's Terminal 3 at 3.35am local time, flight EK328 arrived in Shenzhen's Bao'an International Airport at 3.30pm, completing a seven-hour and 55-minute journey across the Arabian Peninsula, the Indian subcontinent, mainland South-East Asia and southern China. From Wednesday, the route will operate daily, departing Dubai at 10.05am and arriving in Shenzhen at 10pm. The return flight leaves Shenzhen at 11.55pm and lands in Dubai at 3.40am the following day. According to the airline, the schedule supports connections through Dubai to destinations across Africa, Europe and the Americas. Shenzhen is Emirates's fourth destination in mainland China, joining Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. It is also the first Chinese destination to be served by the airline's retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER. It has a capacity of 332 passengers, along with private suites in first class, lie-flat seats in business, as well as dedicated premium economy and economy cabins. For Shadi Al Refai, one of the passengers on the inaugural flight, the direct link to Shenzhen is a major time saver. As the founder of Dubai's Garage Studios, the Jordanian entrepreneur has travelled frequently to Shenzhen over the past three years to source everything from custom-made cables to cameras for his company. 'Before, you had to fly into Hong Kong and then catch a train or boat to Shenzhen, which added at least three to four more hours,' he tells The National. 'Now it's more streamlined and that's great because it allows me to focus on what I need to do. At the same time, instead of spending that extra time travelling, I can use it to explore the city, which I've found to be really friendly and full of things to see.' Taxiing to the traditional water‑cannon salute, Emirates's arrival adds to the busy operations at Bao'an International Airport, which handled more than 61.5 million travellers in 2024, according to industry intelligence firm, the Centre for Aviation. The airport currently has two runways, with a third nearing completion and reportedly expected to open later this year. Terminal 3 has been expanded to accommodate international flights to destinations such as Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. Bao'an International Airport also serves as a key gateway to China's Greater Bay Area, which includes Hong Kong, Macau and other mainland cities. The new route adds to Emirates's passenger and cargo operations from China, with the airline stating its weekly cargo capacity from the mainland now totals 2,000 tonnes. Positioned as a growing technology hub – home to Huaqiangbei, one of the largest electronics markets in the world – and located within China's Special Economic Zone, Shenzhen is expected to generate new cargo demand, particularly for the specialised handling and export of electronics and tech products. 'Our expansion into Shenzhen opens new doors for business and economic exchange between this technological powerhouse and global markets,' said Kazim Adnan, Emirates Airlines deputy president and chief commercial officer, as part of the March announcement of the route. 'As we prepare to launch operations, we extend our gratitude to the Chinese authorities and airport partners for their ongoing support, and we are committed to ensuring this route's success while fostering cultural bonds and unlocking future economic potential.' Shenzhen follows the resumption of Emirates's daily flights to Phnom Penh via Singapore in May. This month, a direct service also launched from Dubai to Bogota, while five additional weekly flights to Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires are scheduled to begin in December.
