Science, tech to drive ASEAN's digital and green economy vision

The Sun08-05-2025
SERDANG: ASEAN must embrace science and technology and produce innovations to power up the region's digital and green economy visions sustainably, in order to achieve its ambition of becoming the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030.
Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said this is why the 18 Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs) also include the development of policy recommendations and guidelines to support the ASEAN Electric Vehicle (EV) Implementation Roadmap.
'This marks a significant step in aligning regional regulatory and infrastructure initiatives to drive the growth of a robust and sustainable EV ecosystem across ASEAN,' he said at the launch of the Malaysia Autoshow (MAS) 2025 here, today.
He cited the ASEAN Battery Swapping Standard as an example of the region's vision in action, aimed at streamlining EV charging infrastructure through a unified standard across ASEAN.
'This harmonisation not only reduces operational costs and attracts more investments, but also enhances convenience, accessibility, and consumer confidence. This ensures a more seamless and impactful green mobility transition and reinforces our leadership in the sector,' he added.
However, he stated that true resilience in the automotive sector hinges on deeper regional supply chain integration.
'By fostering complementary supply chains and developing markets within ASEAN, we can significantly boost production efficiency, reduce dependence on external markets, and build a more agile and robust automotive ecosystem.
'With each member state bringing its unique strengths to the table, we can position ASEAN as a global hub for sustainable and next-generation mobility solutions,' he said.
Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia is significantly strengthening its contribution to ASEAN's vision through the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030).
'A key mission of this plan is our 'Push for Net Zero', which includes strategic initiatives focused on e-mobility, to cultivate a greener, more vibrant, and prosperous Malaysia by 2030.
'Through our clear policies, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is firmly guiding industries to move up the value chain to remain competitive and resilient amid rapid technological disruptions and shifting (global) trade dynamics,' he added.
As the ASEAN Chairman in 2025, he said the country is proud to take the lead in shaping the region's political, economic and social agenda. ASEAN—the world's fifth-largest economic bloc with a gross domestic product of US$3.8 trillion (US$1=RM4.22), stands at an important crossroad.
'ASEAN must remain agile, forward-thinking and united in navigating these evolving global challenges such as the US-China trade war.
'How we manage the US tariff issue as a bloc is key to the region's future growth trajectory. To this end, several of our 18 PEDs are related to the upgrading the ASEAN Trade in Good Agreement, as well as advancing ASEAN's trade-based frameworks with China, India, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC),' he said.
MAS 2025, held for the third consecutive year, features 200 exhibitors and more than 500 vehicles.

Hartalega stays anchored by long-term strategy

Hartalega CEO Kuan Mun Leong. PETALING JAYA: The overcapacity situation in the glove sector persists and operating costs are rising amid intense competition, especially from China and other regional manufacturers, says Hartalega Holdings Bhd chief executive officer Kuan Mun Leong. 'Ongoing uncertainty surrounding US tariff policies continues to weigh down on demand, especially in the US market, while also prompting a shift in long-term sourcing strategies among US importers,' he added in his review of the company's first-quarter of financial 2026 (1Q26) results. According to Kuan, the company's 1Q26 performance reflects the ongoing recalibration taking place in the global sector. Hartalega posted a net profit of RM12.61mil in the quarter under review, a sharp decline from RM31.93mil in the year-ago quarter for an earnings per share of 0.37 sen against 0.94 sen in the comparative quarter. It said revenue was lower at RM553.11mil in 1Q26 as compared to RM583.84mil in 1Q25. The group said the performance was impacted by a reduction in average selling prices (ASP) as well as lower sales volume, primarily owing to front-loaded inventories held by US customers and deferred orders in response to ongoing tariff developments. At the same time, pricing pressures intensified in non-US markets, driven by excess supply from Chinese manufacturers. In addition, operating profit was affected by the lower ASPs, strengthening of the ringgit and less favourable cost absorption resulting from lower capacity utilisation. Kuan said Hartalega was anchored by its long-term strategy, focusing on enhancing production efficiency and cost optimisation, investing in advanced automation, maintaining robust fiscal discipline, and sharpening its sales approach to strengthen its competitiveness and resilience. 'While near-term conditions are challenging, structural glove demand for rubber gloves continues to hold strong prospects, driven by growing global healthcare needs and hygiene awareness. 'Our focus remains on building long-term value while continuing to uphold best practices in responsible manufacturing and environmental, social and governance compliance.' Separately, Hartalega said its wholly-owned subsidiary, Hartalega NGC Sdn Bhd, has received a Notice of Additional Assessments totalling RM101.36mil from the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) for the years of assessment from 2017 to 2022. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the glovemaker said the assessments, dated Aug 4, 2025, comprised RM13.92mil for 2017, RM36.35mil for 2018, RM10,695 for 2019, RM32.89mil for 2020, RM18.10mil for 2021, and RM90,625 for 2022. 'The company is currently seeking legal advice and evaluating its legal options, which may include initiating a formal appeal to the IRB,' Hartalega said.

PETRONAS to seek US$1bil for oil field stake sale

PETRONAS bought the stake in the Tartaruga Verde oil field in 2019. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) is working with Bank of America Corp to sell its 50% stake in the Brazilian oil field Tartaruga Verde, according to people familiar with the matter. PETRONAS, as the Kuala Lumpur-based company is known, is looking to get about US$1bil for the stake, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing non-public information. Citaglobal acquires 12.8% stake in Mutiara Perlis

PETALING JAYA: Citaglobal Bhd has proposed to acquire a 12.8% indirect stake in Mutiara Perlis Sdn Bhd, the master developer of the Perlis Maritime Corridor (PMC), a US$6.5bil (RM27.8bil) logistics infrastructure project. The acquisition involves purchasing a 20% stake in Manjaran Sdn Bhd for RM40mil from Dedap Rimbun Sdn Bhd, satisfied through issuing 42.11 million new Citaglobal shares at 95 sen each. Dedap Rimbun will continue to hold 80% of Manjaran post-completion of the acquisition by Citaglobal. The PMC includes the Perlis Inland Port (PIP), Perlis Sanglang Port and Perlis Power Hub. The PIP, located 4.7km from the Malaysia-Thailand border in Padang Besar, is set to replace the overloaded Padang Besar Container Terminal. It will start operations in September 2025, offering increased container capacity and services such as warehousing for the halal, automotive and rubber industries. The Perlis Power Hub, meanwhile, will supply up to 5GW of electricity to Northern Malaysia and Southern Thailand, while the Sanglang Port will feature a bulk cargo terminal and a supply base for vessels and oil and gas operations. Citaglobal's involvement in the PMC began in August 2022, when its subsidiary, Citaglobal Land Sdn Bhd, was appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for PIP's Phase 1, valued at RM573.5mil. The federal government, through the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority, has invested nearly RM400mil in external infrastructure for the PIP, which aligns with the 12th Malaysia Plan and Northern Corridor Economic Region development plans. Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, executive chairman and president of Citaglobal, said: 'Our involvement and investment in the PMC aligns with our broader vision to emerge as one of Malaysia's leading players in infrastructure development and energy transition.' He noted that the completed Phase 1 of PIP and its upcoming operations could contribute to Citaglobal's revenue, with potential for future valuation gains as PMC assets mature. Datuk Shabaruddin Ibrahim, group executive chairman of Mutiara Perlis, said: 'We welcome Citaglobal into the Perlis Maritime Corridor family, and are excited to work together. 'We have a shared vision of developing the local economy of Perlis, improving social wellbeing while also strengthening Malaysia's regional logistical reach in Asia.' Mutiara Perlis is a joint venture, with Mutiara Infra holding an 80% stake and the Perlis State Government, via Menteri Besar Incorporated, holding 20%. Citaglobal, a public-listed company, operates in clean energy, civil engineering, telecommunications and manufacturing, with additional ventures in waste-to-energy and clean energy collaborations globally.
