Blues sign center Pius Suter to 2-year, $4 million contract
Suter, 29, is coming off the best season of his career, notching 25 goals and 46 points in 81 games with the Vancouver Canucks. During two seasons in Vancouver, Suter did the bulk of his scoring — 34 of 39 goals — at even strength.
He scored twice in 13 games with the Canucks during the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Nikolaj Ehlers chooses Carolina Hurricanes, taking NHL's top free agent off market
The long wait for Nikolaj Ehlers' free agent decision is over. Ehlers decided Thursday to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes, taking the top player available off the market more than 72 hours since the NHL's signing period began. Ehlers agreed to terms on a six-year, $51 million contract. He'll count $8.5 million against the salary cap through 2031. It turned out to be worth the wait for the speedy 29-year-old winger from Denmark who played his first 10 seasons with Winnipeg. Ehlers' contract is the most lucrative of any signed by an unrestricted free agent this week and second only to K'Andre Miller — also with Carolina in a sign and trade from the New York Rangers — in total dollars. 'Nikolaj was the top free agent available on July 1, and we are proud that he's chosen to make Carolina his home,' general manager Eric Tulsky said. 'He's a highly skilled winger who can really skate and will fit very well with our forward group.' Ehlers joins a core that has reached the playoffs seven consecutive seasons under coach Rod Brind'Amour with two trips to the Eastern Conference final over the past three springs. Elsehwere, Dmitry Orlov is heading to the spend-happy San Jose Sharks, who have been active in NHL free agency and made a pickup off the waiver wire Thursday to reach the salary floor. Orlov, who turns 34 later this month, signed a two-year contract worth $13 million. A Stanley Cup champion from his time in Washington who spent the past two seasons in Carolina, the veteran defenseman will count $6.5 million against the cap through 2026-27. Orlov is the latest addition for the Sharks, who needed to add $20 million somehow to get to the $70.6 million minimum for player salaries. That counts money owed to captain Logan Couture, whose playing career is over because of a debilitating injury. San Jose also claimed Nick Leddy off waivers from St. Louis to add to its new-look blue line that includes recently signed veteran John Klingberg, who got $4 million for next season. 'Klingberg was someone we had targeted for a little while now,' general manager Mike Grier said earlier this week. 'We need someone who can run a power play. We think, as he showed he was getting healthier and healthier this year and another year out from his hip (surgery), I think he'll be even better' Leddy also has a year left on his contract at a cap hit of $4 million, with $3 million in actual dollars owed. Orlov is the only experienced defenseman San Jose has signed beyond 2026. Brent Burns, who played alongside Orlov the past two seasons with the Hurricanes, agreed to terms with Colorado on Wednesday night to a one-year contract worth $1 million with up to $3 million more attainable through performance bonuses. The 40-year-old who won the Norris Trophy as top defenseman in 2017, is set to become the 23rd player in league history to play at least 22 seasons. 'I just love it: I love coming to the rink every day and working,' said Burns, who is three games shy of reaching 1,500 in the regular season over his career. 'It really is the best. You're around guys that they're chasing one goal and there's just something special about it: all the laughs and the working hard together. It's really special to try to build something together, and I just enjoy that process.'

Arsenal head of recruitment James Ellis to be promoted to technical director
Arsenal's head of recruitment James Ellis is set to be promoted to the role of technical director. The Athletic previously reported that new sporting director Andrea Berta is looking to expand the group working around him following the departure of predecessor Jason Ayto. Ellis, who joined the north London club from Fulham in the summer of 2021, is now set to take on more responsibility alongside the Italian. Advertisement Arsenal were in talks with Matteo Tognozzi, formerly of Juventus and Granada, over the role but that is not now expected to result in an appointment. Ellis was originally a first-team scout but was given a bigger role under previous sporting director Edu. Arsenal will be pleased to retain Ellis' services: his burgeoning reputation has attracted interest from other clubs. Ayto held the sporting director position on an interim basis following Edu's exit in November before the club instead opted for former Atletico Madrid executive Berta. Berta moved to Arsenal after 12 years in Spain and has overseen one signing so far with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga arriving from Chelsea. Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is expected to be confirmed as an Arsenal player soon while the club have agreed a deal for Brentford captain Christian Norgaard. ()

Hurricanes sign Nikolaj Ehlers to 6-year contract with $8.5 million cap hit
The Carolina Hurricanes signed free agent forward Nikolaj Ehlers to a six-year contract with a $8.5 million cap hit on Thursday. Ehlers had spent his entire 10-year NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets, registering 225 goals and 295 assists over 674 games. He ranks fifth all-time for the Jets in career goals and assists. Advertisement The 29-year-old winger nearly matched his career high with 63 points this past season for the Jets, scoring 24 goals in 69 games. He added five goals and two assists in eight playoff games, returning from an injury midway through the first round series against St. Louis. He had a pair of two-goal games in the second round against the Dallas Stars. Ehlers is a fast-skating winger with excellent playmaking ability and defensive responsibility. He has a plus-106 on-ice rating for his career, and has never finished a season with a negative goal share at even strength. When healthy Ehlers has proven to be a consistent 20-goal scorer over a decade in the NHL. He was also great for Winnipeg's power play in 2024-25 with a career-high 22 points with a man advantage. The only possible concern for the Dane is his recent injury history. Ehlers has reached 70 games played only once in the last five seasons. It's another big move for Carolina, which traded for defenseman K'Andre Miller on Tuesday, sending first- and second-round draft picks and prospect Scott Morrow to the New York Rangers. Carolina also signed Ehlers to an eight-year contract with a $7.5 million cap hit.
