South African 1 500m record falls
Tshite, 28, crossed the line in 3:31.35, shaving more than half a second off the previous South African record of 3:31.93 set by Johan Cronje in 2013.
It was Tshite's first national outdoor record, adding to his existing South African indoors records in both the 1 500m (3:35.06) and the mile (3:54.10). Fastest in recent history
While Tshepo Tshite finished ninth in a stacked field, the race was one of the fastest in recent history.
France's Azeddine Habz took the win in 3:27.49, setting the fastest time in the world this year and dragging five other runners under the 3:30 barrier.
Athletics South Africa (ASA) president James Moloi praised Tshite's achievement while also calling for broader performance improvement across the national team ahead of major competitions, including the upcoming World Championships in Japan this September.
'As we congratulate Tshite for achieving his feat of breaking a record, we also take the opportunity to encourage all athletes to drastically improve their performances in order to reach podium positions,' said Moloi.
'We don't take anything away from him – for a national record is always an achievement to be celebrated.
'It becomes a new benchmark for others.
'We therefore congratulate Tshite, his coach, and all of his support staff.'
Meanwhile, in the men's 5 000m event, fellow South African Adriaan Wildschutt finished 14th in 13:28.67, well behind Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha, who stormed to victory in a world-class 12:47.84.
The next leg of the Diamond League series will take place in Eugene, Oregon in the United States on Saturday, 5 July.
NOTE: All South African records are subject to official ratification.

Orlando Pirates: SEVEN more midfielders heading out of Mayfair
Orlando Pirates have released one midfielder. Many more are expected to follow him out. Orlando Pirates squad overhaul is well underway. The Bucs have already unveiled NINE new Bucs players. Meanwhile, FOUR players have been released. So, the good news is more players will be signed. However, the bad news is that more players are set to leave – including several midfielders. Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, Goodman Mosele, Azola Tshobeni, Siphelo Baloni, Thusi Moleleki, Selaelo Rasebotja and Karim Kimvuidi all face uncertain futures at Pirates, according to KickOff. So, most of these players will leave the club. Some will be loaned out. Whilst, others will be sold permanently. As reported on The South African, these THREE midfielders are amongst the FOUR Pirates players who are likely heading out of Mayfair. Ndlondlo is likely to become the next player to leave Pirates. Meanwhile, Otladia and Kimvuidi have been linked with exits for months now. Baloni would be released or loaned out. Meanwhile, Mosele, Tshobeni, Moleleki and Rasebetjo have struggled for gametime under Jose Riveiro. Meaning, this is unlikely to change under Abdeslam Ouaddou. Also, Pirates have signed several talented midfielders such as Sihle Nduli and Sipho Mbule. Therefore, the aforementioned players have now fallen further down the pecking order. So, a move to another club (whether on loan or permanently) is in their best interests. Also, they will have a better chance playing more frequently elsewhere. Especially, in 'smaller' clubs in the PSL that boast less depth and buying power than Pirates. Springboks launch first official flagship fan store
The launch of the first official Springbok store marks the start of an exciting new chapter for South African rugby merchandise. And it fulfils SA Rugby's 2024 goal to meet growing fan demand, curb counterfeit sales, and strengthen the Springbok brand both locally and internationally. The ground-breaking development was inaugurated at a special ceremony on Thursday featuring Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, and Solly Malatsi, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, and is planned to be followed by further store openings elsewhere in the country. The store will feature the official Nike replica teamwear as well as an exciting new range of off-field supporters clothing, called Springboks, designed to be worn everywhere – from the office to the braai. 'In retrospect, it is amazing that we have not had such an offering before now,' said Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union, at the shop launch. 'Before today, if you'd asked the question 'where is the Springbok shop?' you'd have been met by blank faces. 'Famous sports teams around the world have club shops. If you're in the Champs Elysee in Paris, you can visit the Paris St Germain club shop; if you're passing through Munich airport you can visit the Bayern Munich club shop and if you're in the Old Trafford area of Manchester you can visit United's megastore. 'But if a visitor to South Africa wants to take home with him or her a memento of one of Africa's most famous sports teams where was the Springboks store? Now we have an answer.' The new store's offering is also available online for fans both in SA and overseas and can be found at The opening marks the successful completion of a goal set by SARU's Executive Council at the start of 2024 to answer South Africa's hunger for the Springbok brand. Rian Oberholzer, SA Rugby CEO, said: 'The explosion of counterfeiters and imitators since 2019 has flooded e-commerce channels with fake product, borrowing from the colours and iconography of the Springboks. 'The Exco recognised there was a gap in the market that others were exploiting and that there was an opportunity and a need for SA Rugby to meet that demand and retain the value for the benefit of rugby. 'The intention is that this store will be followed by others in due course with a range of clothing that will allow rugby fans to show their support for the Springboks in many different items of clothing – it's not just for Saturdays. 'That we have got here so quickly – within 18 months of setting the goal – is a tribute to the hard work of the team that has gone on behind the scenes. 'This is the start of an exciting new chapter for the Springboks and will take the brand into places it has never been before.' The store is located at Protea Court in Sandton City and can be most easily reached from the Rivonia Road entrance.
