Chip Gaines responds to criticism about ‘Back to the Frontier' casting

CNN15-07-2025
Chip and Joanna Gaines are responding to backlash over the latest show in their media empire.
Chip Gaines took to social media on Sunday to defend their new Magnolia Network reality series, 'Back to the Frontier.' The show drew criticism from some Christian conservatives for featuring a gay couple, Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs.
'Talk, ask [questions], listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never,' Gaines wrote on his X account. 'It's a sad sunday when 'non believers' have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian [broken heart emoji].'
The post came in response to comments from Franklin Graham, the son of the legendary evangelical pastor Billy Graham.
'It is very disappointing,' Graham wrote on X of the casting. 'While we are to love people, we should love them enough to tell them the truth of God's Word. His Word is absolute truth. God loves us, and His design for marriage is between one man and one woman. Promoting something that God defines as sin is in itself sin.'
Gaines and his wife have built off the success of their HGTV show 'Fixer Upper' to build several other businesses, such as a line of home goods. Their partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, which is owned by CNN's parent company, resulted in the launch of the Magnolia Network in 2022.
The new show features three families attempting to live like homesteading pioneers in the 1880s without modern day conveniences, including electricity.
Hanna told Queerty he and Riggs, who are parents of 10-year-old twins, welcomed the 'amazing opportunity to normalize same-sex couples and same-sex families.'
'I'm super honored that when they were choosing three modern-day families, they did choose a same-sex couple as a modern-day family, because we are,' said Hanna, who also shared that when he first saw the flyer advertising the forthcoming series on social media it featured a gay couple. 'We are your neighbors and your coworkers.'
'Back to the Frontier' airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on Magnolia Network and streams on HBO Max.

Report: WWE SmackDown To Extend Three-Hour Format

WWE SmackDown may not return to a two-hour format… yet. 2025 began with WWE SmackDown running as a three-hour show on the USA Network, instead of its usual two hours. This was a significant change for the blue brand, which had largely been a two-hour show since its inception in 1999. Triple H later mentioned in January that this change was only temporary and that SmackDown would go back to two hours later. Advertisement In September 2024, WrestleVotes reported SmackDown would switch back to two hours in June after many three-hour episodes. Last month, WrestleVotes confirmed this again and said the change would likely happen with the June 6 episode of SmackDown, with Dave Meltzer also confirming this detail. However, recent reports from PWInsider say that things might not go as expected. The reports mentioned that the USA Network had internally listed WWE SmackDown as running three hours long in early June. This means the show might continue with the longer, three-hour format instead of going back to the usual two-hour format. It remains to be seen how much longer this format will last, but it looks like SmackDown will be a three-hour show a bit longer. WWE SmackDown May 23rd match card update The May 23 episode of Friday Night SmackDown will air live from the EnMarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia. Patriots, Blues pay tribute to legendary musician Ozzy Osbourne after singer's death at 76

Legendary metal singer and frontman Ozzy Osbourne died Tuesday. He was 76. Osbourne leaves behind quite the legacy. After a successful (and, at times, controversial) music career — both as a solo artist and as the frontman for Black Sabbath — Osbourne was introduced to an entirely new audience on the MTV reality show "The Osbournes." Given the hard-rocking, energetic nature of some of his most popular songs, Osbourne made a few appearances at NFL games over his career. One of those appearances came prior to a New England Patriots game in 2005. The Patriots used Black Sabbath's "Crazy Train" to introduce its players during the team's dynasty. Prior to the team's opener in 2005, it invited Osbourne to sing the song at the stadium in person. He obliged. The Patriots thanked Osbourne for being the voice of that introduction in a tweet Tuesday. Osbourne made a similar appearance during the Los Angeles Rams' season opener in 2022. Doing a live performance of two songs during halftime as the team took on the Buffalo Bills. His sports moments weren't limited to just NFL games. In 2003, he appeared at a Chicago Cubs game, where he sang an ... interesting ... rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" with his wife Sharon. Osbourne also found himself connected to the St. Louis Blues thanks to an unfortunate image. In 1984, Osbourne was arrested for public intoxication. In his mugshot, Osbourne is wearing a Blues jersey. He had played in St. Louis a few days before the arrest. Osbourne, however, decided to poke fun at the moment years later. When the Blues were in the midst of a playoff run in 2019, Osbourne tweeted out an image of the mugshot with the message "Let's go @StLouisBlues." He later tweeted out a picture of himself wearing an updated Blues jersey to show he was still supporting the team. The Blues replied to that tweet Tuesday, saying, "St. Louis loves you, Ozzy. RIP."
