Gridiron Boot Camp: Buckeye Trail football builds brotherhood with 'Military Games'

Yahoo13 hours ago
OLD WASHINGTON −The July heat isn't the only thing cranking up the intensity for the Buckeye Trail High School football team as they prepare for a new season on the gridiron.
Trail head coach Donnie Kerns has set about trying to mold his players into an cohesive, tough and hard working unit, and has split his Warriors' squad into four separate "military-style" teams for a unique "Military Games" competition.
Those four squads, the Scout Snipers, Navy Seals, Green Berets and Force Recon have been waging daily battles in a Military Games series of competitive athletic events such as tug of war, relay races with players carrying weights, and others drills specifically designed to challenge them both mentally and physically.
Each day in July, the teams face off in these various challenges that test physical strength, mental toughness, and the ability to work as a team to accomplish a goal. Traits that will hopefully lead to some successful Friday nights this upcoming fall.
"Anytime we have a chance to breed competition we want to do that," Kerns said. "Football is not an easy game, and I tell the kids its not for everybody. It's a lot of hard work and comes with a lot of responsibilities, expectations and requires lots of sacrifice from the players."
"Sometimes in summer workouts it gets a little dry and kind of complacent almost," the Trail head coach continued. "But since we started the Military Games here in July, it's been super intense and the kids have just been getting after it with everything they have. They battle every day, and it just brings out the best in all of them."
A helping hand from veteran football coach
Kerns credits former Massillon Perry head coach Keith Wakefield for the idea about putting in the Military Games program into his off-season workout schedule.
"A few years ago coach Keith Wakefield came in and gave us the idea, and helped us get started," Kerns said. "It was an idea that he brought about the values, hard work, and the grit that our military forces show every day.- And we kind of emulate that into our football team with this program."
"By no means at the same level as our military forces," Kerns added. "We just want to take some of their work ethic, ability to battle through hard times and a strong working together mentality. Coach Wakefield was a highly successful coach at Massillon Perry High School. Who I would venture to say was one of the best football coaches in Ohio."
Kerns mentioned that both legendary college football coaches Nick Saban and Urban Meyer both included military style workouts within their highly successful football programs.
"Heck if it's good enough for Urban Meyer and Nick Saban, I think it's good enough for Donnie Kerns and the Buckeye Trail Warriors," Kerns joked. "So maybe we are on the right track by implementing this into our program. Just like the military, it builds a brotherhood among the players by pulling together towards a common goal."
Senior captains confident Military Games can aide return to playoffs
Buckeye Trail is coming off a strong 6-4 regular season a year ago that earned the Warriors a berth into the Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason.
And despite dropping a hard fought 30-22 first round setback to Fort Frye, the Warriors have their sights set on a return trip to the OHSAA playoffs.
A pair of Buckeye Trail seniors, 4-year lettermen fullback/outside linebacker Mason Todd and wide receiver/cornerback Sammy Brown are convinced that hard work being done with July's military games workload will help the Warriors return to OHSAA postseason action.
"We are building a really strong brotherhood with our military game workouts," Todd, who serves as the captain of the Navy Seals squad said. "My teammates are pushing me and getting the best out of me with our tough competitions. I think this will really show up in tight games, knowing we have each others back. And will pull together to get those wins on Friday nights."
"It's kind of sad this is my last year with being a senior," Todd added. "And I want to make it the best year we can. And I think our military games experience can make a difference for us. It gives us a huge advantage over our opponents by already pushing through the adversity of these intense, physical battles we are going through now."
In addition to the playoffs, Brown, the captain of the Scout Snipers team pointed out another Warriors' goal this season of wanting to add a championship season in the always tough Inter-Valley Conference.
"We want to win the IVC this season, and then make a return trip to the playoffs," Brown said. "And I think these workouts have helped us push each other to our limits. By going through these together, gives us confidence we can lean on each other. And know nobody is going to quit when it gets tough on Friday nights."
Military games champion already decided??
Despite the Military Games competition continuing until Friday, July 25th, a confident Todd feels a champion has already been decided.
"My team and it's not even close," Todd said with a big smile when asked about who was leading the way atop the leaderboard. "We've got it wrapped up already."
Kerns explained whichever squad takes the title will receive some sort of award that has yet to be decided. Maybe with a pizza party, or special Military Games championship shirts or pullovers. But Kerns feels his entire team will be winners having gone through the experience.
"It's just been a great thing for our entire team," Kerns said. "Everybody wins by all of them getting stronger, tougher and forming a great brotherhood with each other. It's been a truly rewarding experience for our entire program, and we are excited for the upcoming season."

"We have done this the last two July's now," Kerns continued. "And I would never do it any other way now. Military Games will be what we do in July every year as long as I'm the head football coach here at Buckeye Trail. I'm a believer in the benefits it brings to our team."
Buckeye Trail travels to Caldwell to open the new season on Friday, August 22nd, 7 p.m.

Tanner Gordon's 6 scoreless innings help Rockies beat Cardinals for their 1st shutout of the season

DENVER (AP) — Tanner Gordon pitched six scoreless innings and Ezequiel Tovar hit a home run to help the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 on Wednesday and win back-to-back series for the first time since Sept. 13-18, 2024. Gordon (2-2) gave up four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Jimmy Herget threw two innings of one-hit relief before Tyler Kinley pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. The trio combined for Colorado's first shutout of the season. The Rockies hit five consecutive singles in their four-run second inning off St. Louis starter Andre Pallante (5-7) and Jordan Beck added an RBI double in the fifth to make it 5-0. Tovar's solo shot in the eighth capped the scoring. Germán Márquez, who was scheduled to start for Colorado, was moved to the 15-day IL earlier Wednesday due to right biceps tendinitis. The Cardinals snapped their streak of scoring at least four runs in 11 straight games at Coors Field since Oliver Marmol became manager in 2021. Key moment Ryan McMahon drew a leadoff walk and, after Tovar flied out, Austin Nola, Kyle Farmer, Adael Amador, Tyler Freeman and Mickey Moniak hit five consecutive singles to give the Rockies a 4-0 lead in the second. Key stat Colorado, which was an MLB-worst 22-74 at the All-Star break, is 4-2 since their return. The Rockies have won as many series since the break (two) as they did prior to it. Up next Sonny Gray (9-4, 4.04 ERA) is set to pitch for St. Louis on Thursday against Yu Darvish (0-2, 6.08) in the first of four games against San Diego. Kyle Freeland (2-10, 5.19) takes the mound Friday for Colorado against the Baltimore Orioles, who haven't announced a starter. ___ AP MLB:

De Minaur opens Washington campaign with solid win

Alex de Minaur has made an impressive start to his Washington Open campaign, notching a straight-sets victory over China's Bu Yunchaokete. Playing his first event since his heartbreaking defeat to Novak Djokovic in the fourth round at Wimbledon, the Australian No.1 claimed a morale-boosting 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 win to set up a last-16 clash with Czech Jiri Lehecka. As seventh seed at the tournament, de Minaur was favourite to see off world No.75 Bu. Now the Australian can take heart from a solid performance at the hardcourt ATP 500 tournament as he builds towards next month's US Open, where last year he reached his third consecutive grand slam quarter-final. Solid start 🫡@alexdeminaur fends off Bu 7-6, 6-2 to open his campaign in DC.#MubadalaCitiDCOpen — Mubadala Citi DC Open (@mubadalacitidc) July 23, 2025 De Minaur has enjoyed previous success in the American capital. In 2018, then ranked No.72, he made a surprise run to his first ATP 500 final, where he lost 6-2 6-4 to Alexander Zverev. Now 26, the world No.13 will look to make further progression at the Washington Open after racking up his 280th career win and 31st this season as he continues his quest to return to the top 10. However, there was no such joy for De Minaur's compatriot Aleksandar Vukic, the Sydneysider suffering a 6-3 6-2 defeat to the top-seeded Taylor Fritz. American Fritz was making his first appearance since his impressive semi-final run at Wimbledon, where he gave Carlos Alcaraz a real test. And Australia's world No.24 Alexei Popyrin is also out after a bruising 7-5 5-7 6-3 defeat to China's Yibing Wu, who claimed his first win over a top-25 player in over two years in two hours and 37 minutes.

Phoenix Suns bring back guard Jordan Goodwin after he's waived by Lakers

The Phoenix Suns have acquired guard Jordan Goodwin, who most recently was with the Los Angeles Lakers and formerly played for Phoenix. ESPN's Shams Charania first reported the news on July 23. Goodwin, 26, was claimed off waivers and agreed to a $2.3 million veteran minimum deal with only $25K guaranteed, and the remainder is fully protected if not waived by Jan. 7, per ESPN's NBA front office insider Bobby Marks. Goodwin was released by the Los Angeles Lakers alongside Shake Milton to bring in veteran guard Marcus Smart, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, signing him for their biannual exception of a two-year deal for $11 million. Goodwin fills one of the Suns' two remaining roster spots for 15 guaranteed deals, and helps with their point guard void. He originally came to the Suns from Washington in the Bradley Beal trade in June 2023. He was waived at the trade deadline in February 2023, signed with the Memphis Grizzlies on a 10-day deal, then signed with the Lakers in September 2024. Now, Goodwin replaces Beal, who was bought out by the Suns on July 16, then joined the L.A. Clippers. Support local journalism: Subscribe to today.
