155 MALBATT 850-12 Personnel Honoured With UN Medals In Lebanon

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- A total of 155 officers and personnel from the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) 850-12 were awarded the United Nations (UN) Medal during a ceremonial medal parade held at Camp Marakah, Lebanon, yesterday.
In a statement issued today, MALBATT 850-12 confirmed that the recipients included 20 officers, 134 rank-and-file personnel, and one Administrative and Diplomatic Officer.
'Leading the list of honourees was MALBATT 850-12 commander Colonel Johan Effendi Mohd Shalleh, receiving the medal as a symbolic recognition of his leadership and key role in the successful execution of the mission.
'The medals were then presented to senior officers and all other personnel by UNIFIL Western Sector commander, Brig Gen Nicola Mandolesi,' the statement said.
The medal parade was led by MALBATT 850-12 deputy commander Lt Col Firdaus Shah Budin and accompanied by a military band from the Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT).
Also in attendance was Malaysian Ambassador to Lebanon, Azri Mat Yacob, who took part in the medal presentation as a gesture of the Malaysian government's support and appreciation for the battalion's contributions to international peacekeeping.
'The awarding of the UN Medal is formal recognition of MALBATT 850-12's contributions to regional peace and their professional and dedicated execution of international duties,' the statement said.
MALBATT 850-12 began its deployment under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in November 2024, during a particularly volatile period marked by conflict in southern Lebanon and heightened regional tensions involving Israel and Iran - factors that have severely strained local political stability and security.
'In this context, the presence of MALBATT 850-12 plays a vital role in supporting UNIFIL's mandate to assist the Lebanese Government in strengthening security control and monitoring within their area of operations.

Prabakaran. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The government's decision to review the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is not a hasty reaction but one that has gone through discussions over the past two weeks, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the discussions began with a draft presented by the Economy Ministry secretary-general to the Cabinet. 'We've actually discussed this. In my press conference a few weeks ago, I mentioned that the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) had issued a directive to review the draft presented by the Economy Ministry secretary-general. 'As you know, any policy, programme or decision must first be presented at a Cabinet meeting. 'So, on Friday last week, the Prime Minister requested that all ministries review the draft and provide their feedback to the Economy Ministry,' he said at a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda programme organised by the Community Communications Department (J-KOM) yesterday. Fahmi, who is also the government spokesman, said a special Cabinet meeting was held last Monday to review feedback from all ministries. 'During the meeting, it was determined that several issues raised by the ministries require further consideration by the Economy Ministry in the preparation of the 13MP document.' 'That was one of the reasons why, in last Wednesday's Cabinet meeting it was decided that Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah would take on the duties and functions of the Economy Minister,' he said, Bernama reported. Earlier, former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli was reported to have questioned the government's move to review the 13MP, calling it a hasty response to social media criticism. This followed Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar's announcement on Friday that Amir Hamzah had been tasked with 'reviewing and revamping' the 13MP while concurrently performing the duties and functions of the Economy Minister, effective immediately. The 13MP is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on July 31.

The Defence Minister said armed forces commanders should issue firm instructions to their personnel to use social media responsibly and avoid compromising national security. 'Sometimes, in their eagerness to showcase training or equipment, personnel may unintentionally reveal where such assets are stored. This could expose our strengths to those with ill intent,' he told reporters after an event here, Bernama reported. The minister was responding to a reminder issued by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who cautioned military personnel against sharing everything on social media, particularly sensitive information related to troop movements and operations. His Majesty, when officiating the commissioning parade of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) cadet officers on Saturday, decreed for military personnel to be cautious and refrain from disclosing unnecessary information to the public. Meanwhile, Mohamed Khaled said his ministry will continue to acquire strategic assets annually to strengthen national security. These are not off-the-shelf purchases, he stressed, but custom orders tailored to the armed forces' operational needs across land, air and sea to ensure suitability and effective deployment. 'We have already procured 18 FA-50 aircraft from South Korea and three Littoral Mission Ships.
