Commercial film shoots in national parks: Kerala HC seeks state govt's views
The court was hearing an appeal by Angels Nair, general secretary of NGO Animal Legal Force Integration, Ernakulam. Nair's appeal raised concerns regarding the 2018 shoot of the Malayalam film Unda, including soil dumping in a reserved forest in Kasaragod.
Responding to the petition, the forest and wildlife department's under secretary filed a counter-affidavit enclosing a GO that revises entry fees and security deposits for filming in protected areas.
The order sets separate fee schedules for commercial, documentary and educational films.
After examining the documents, the court questioned whether commercial shoots should be allowed at all in such areas. At the special govt pleader's request, the matter was adjourned to Jun 23 for instructions, and Manu Vyasan Peter was appointed amicus curiae.

The Kerala High Court is set to watch the Malayalam film JSK – Janaki Vs State of Kerala starring Union Minister Suresh Gopi, for which the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not issued censor certificate yet, on Saturday (July 7, 2025). The court said it would first watch the movie before passing any orders. Justice N. Nagaresh will watch the movie at 10 a.m. at Lal Media, Palarivattom. The film's production company Cosmos Entertainments, which is the petitioner, had requested that the court watch the film. Justice N. Nagaresh stated that a representative of both the petitioner and the CBFC, or their counsel, be present during the screening. 'Considering the allegations in the petitions, I believe it is appropriate to watch the movie before arriving at a decision,' he added. The court had on Monday termed the CBFC's revising committee seeking a change of the name 'Janaki' in the title and of the protagonist 'a challenge to the freedom of creative expression.' Justifying the demand for the change of name, the board's counsel had contended that the character Janaki in the film is sexually assaulted. To this, the counsel for the petitioner argued that the character Janaki who is portrayed in the film is 'a fighter for justice.' He said the CBFC had not cited any problem with 'Janaki' in the title earlier this year when its trailer was released. 'The same board had also issued a censor certificate to a film by name 'Janaki Jaane,' he pointed out. The court observed that 'the character is a victim who is fighting for justice, and is not an accused. Moreover, In India, a good share of names are either of gods and goddesses or have similarities with their names.' The case has been posted for hearing on July 8.

Kochi: Maharaja's College is set to revamp its history syllabus under the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUGP) by integrating local history with global developments. The history department's board of studies has submitted recommendations to the academic council, including electives that focus on the local history of Kochi and the achievements of the college's distinguished alumni. As part of the first-semester minor subject in the history department, the life and achievements of Dakshayani Velayudhan, the only dalit woman in the Indian Constituent Assembly, are now included. Her story will be part of a unit titled "Influential social reformers and thinkers of Kochi." The syllabus will also feature figures such as Pandit Karuppan, KP Vallon, Arnos Pathiri, PK Padmanabha Menon, PK Balakrishnan, and PS Velayudhan. In addition, the department has proposed a new elective on the history of Malayalam cinema. This course will examine the chronological evolution of the industry and include a sub-theme on stardom, focusing on the life and work of celebrated actors who were once students at Maharajas College. "MG University has put forth a syllabus, but as an autonomous institution, we adapt or amend it. During our discussions, we found there is a need to study the larger issues concerning Kochi's local history," said Dr Sakhariya Thangal, head of the history department. Kerala's Governor opposes inclusion of Vedan song in Calicut University syllabus
Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has sought an explanation from Calicut University for its inclusion of rapper Vedan's song Bhoomi Njan Vaazhunna idam. The university recently made it a part of its undergraduate course in Malayalam Language and Literature. However, the Governor has opposed the move and asked for the university's explanation for it, based on a complaint by a BJP supporter named AK Anuraj. The Governor is also a Calicut University Chancellor, and he has sought the explanation from its Vice Chancellor. The Governor's contention stems from the fact that Vedan has been under fire following his arrest for consumption of drugs and possession of a tiger's tooth. The Governor argued that including his song in the syllabus would make him a bad idol among students, prompting them to follow in his footsteps. It is worth noting that, in 2021, a group of women also accused the rapper of sexual misconduct, a claim to which he agreed and an act for which he apologised. Vedan has been in the news following the LDF-led Kerala Government's invitation to him to take part in a recent event marking its 10th anniversary in power. Subsequently, filmmaker Pa Ranjith supported the embattled rapper as he shared an image carrying a piece of text that read, "We Stand With Vedan".
