Former Texas A&M O-line coach named interim HC of the UFL's Memphis Showboats
Looking back at Texas A&M's best offensive lines over the last two decades, one O-line coach has consistently stood out outside of current mainstay Adam Cushing, who followed head coach Mike Elko from Duke before the 2024 season. Before Cushing arrived in College Station, Aggie fans consistently brought up veteran coach Jim Turner as the potential successor to Steve Adazzio.
Going back to the HeyDey of Texas A&M's offensive line play during the Mike Sherman era, Turner ran the Aggie trenches in NFL fashion. From 2009-11, Texas A&M ranked among the nation's top 25 teams in total offense, averaging more than 440 yards per game each season. Regarding pass protection, Turner's coaching led to just nine sacks allowed during the 2011 season.
After leaving the Aggies, Turner coached the Miami Dolphins offensive line from 2012-2013. Turner returned to Texas A&M in the same capacity from 2016-2018, working under coaches Kevin Sumlin and Jimbo Fisher. During the 2018 season, Turner's O-line paved the way for Texas A&M running back Trayveon Williams, who went on to lead the SEC in rushing yards (1760), rushing touchdowns (18), and total touchdowns (19).
Since leaving Texas A&M for the second time, Turner's short one-year stint with the Cincinnati Bengals led to his last college job with Texas State before joining the Memphis Showboats of the UFL. In a shocking change, Showboats head coach Ken Whisenhunt unexpectedly stepped down for personal reasons, vaulting Jim Turner into the interim head coaching role.
Turner's experience at both levels is the primary reason for his promotion, despite his never having served as an offensive or defensive coordinator.

Popular analytics guru projects Wisconsin football win total for 2025 season
The calendar is just days away from reading 'August,' which means it's time for final preparation before the 2025 college football season. One notable milestone in that preparation is Big Ten media days, which are currently taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell and player representatives quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., cornerback Ricardo Hallman and center Jake Renfro all spoke on Wednesday. Here is further coverage of their comments. Another important stage of the season countdown is updates to various power ratings and projection models. One leader in that regard is Parker Fleming (@statsowar on X), who released his model's projected win totals for every Football Bowl Subdivision team on Monday. Wisconsin's projected win total: 5.2. Meanwhile, Wisconsin's Big Ten schedule includes games against Ohio State (10.1 projected wins), Oregon (10), Indiana (8.6), Michigan (8.4), Illinois (7.6), Washington (7.3), Iowa (7.2) and Minnesota (6.2). Of course, each team's schedule heavily weighs into their projected final record. But in Fleming's model, eight of Wisconsin's nine Big Ten opponents are projected bowl teams, with three potentially representing the conference in the College Football Playoff. Wisconsin's projection of 5.2 wins falls in line with the consensus. ESPN's Football Power Index projects 5.6 wins for the Badgers, while most sportsbooks hold their line at 5 1/2. We at Badgers Wire are a bit more optimistic -- we picked a 6-6 record for Luke Fickell's team with wins over Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee, Maryland, Iowa, Washington and Indiana, and losses to Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Illinois and Minnesota. College football's current structure creates a significant discrepancy between five and six wins. If Fleming's projection comes true, Wisconsin would miss a bowl game for the second straight season and risk falling even further in the Big Ten pecking order. 6-6 finish to the regular season, meanwhile, would represent a step in the right direction and build tangible momentum entering 2026. 2026 5-star Edge is reportedly close to announcing his commitment
Texas A&M's future edge rotation could feature one of the elite pass rushers in the 2026 cycle, as five-star Anthony "Tank" Jones is reportedly close to making a decision, which he revealed during his recent interview with On3/Rivals reporter Hayes Fawcett on Thursday. Already known to the public, Jones is set to choose between Alabama, Oregon, and Texas A&M, all of which have hosted him for official visits this summer. Jones is an Alabama native, and right now, the Crimson Tide, who have been equally hot on the recruiting trail, remain the slight leaders, but no one is counting out the Oregon or the Aggies who have equal momentum, while coach Mike Elko and defensive line coaches Tony Jerod-Eddie and Sean Spencer have recruited Jones the hardest from the very start. During the interview, Jones discussed how all three programs stick out, ranking Alabama, Texas A&M, and Oregon in that order. While he certainly had plenty of praise for the Tide, Jones continued to point out that the Aggies have pushed the hardest since offering him during the early stages of his football career, while defensive coordinator Jay Bateman "The position coaches are a big reason why Texas A&M is so high on my list and the way Coach Bateman uses the big end position.' This season, senior edge Cashius Howell will be the player to watch for Jones if he makes another visit to College Station during the 2025 campaign, as Mike Elko is now calling plays, while he and Bateman's scheme is based around aggressive coverage in the secondary, and a pass rush that also values stopping the run. During his 2024 junior season wth St. Paul's Episcopal, Jones recorded 84 tackles, 16 sacks, and 18 tackles for loss. According to Rivals, Jones is the 23rd-ranked prospect in the cycle, the 2nd-ranked prospect in Alabama, and the 2nd-ranked Edge prospect.
