Sir Mark Cavendish Raceway renamed in honour of Manx sprinter
The raceway at the Isle of Man 's National Sports Centre has been officially renamed in honour of Sir Mark Cavendish.
The Manx sprinter was in Douglas to christen the new Sir Mark Cavendish Raceway, where he began cycling competitively as a child, and which helped kickstart his glittering career.
Cavendish, who retired at the end of the 2024 season after a 19-year professional career, completed a timed 'hot lap' of the 1km raceway before being joined by a number of local children to ride around the renamed facility.
Cavendish told The Independent, 'It's a big honour. It's the place where I started and it had a profound impact on my career, so from a sentimental point of view, it's very, very nice. I was about ten or eleven when I first started racing there, going down on a BMX and getting my head kicked in! Then getting a bike with gears, getting the thrill of it, I wanted to be first across the line every time.
'It's exactly the same now [for these kids], they've just got faster bikes!'
The 40-year-old raced his final Tour de France last year, retiring with a record 35 stage wins at cycling's most prestigious race, along with 20 stage wins at the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana, a world road race title, several major one-day wins including at Milan-San Remo, and three world championship victories on the track.
His children, including seven-year-old Casper, now follow in his footsteps by riding on the raceway, and Cavendish said the facility is hugely important for instilling a love of cycling and enjoyment of sport. Members of his former cycling club were also in attendance at Friday's event, forming a guard of honour before his timed lap.
'I fell in love with cycling because of the community,' Cavendish added. Some of the volunteers who run events at the Raceway, including children's racing nights, are still around from when he was coming through the ranks. 'That's the beauty of cycling, that everyone can do it, it's got this club feel to it, and it's so nice to see that hasn't changed.
'The facilities for sport are so good for such a small community, everyone embraces it here. It rains a lot and everyone is out, whether it's playing footy, track and field, or cycling – it's in everyone's blood. Most people have a racing nature in them.'
The Raceway held a similar 'parade lap' featuring local children alongside Cavendish last year to celebrate his Tour de France record, and he wanted to replicate that this year to get the community involved.
'I'm so honoured that it's my name on there, but it's a place for everyone,' he said. 'The kids can dream there. To be able to push things further [as a professional cyclist] you have to travel the world, and knowing someone from your community can do it, having the inspiration to do what you want to achieve [is important].'

UK's oldest velodrome in Brighton recovers after closure
It might be a wonky shape, outdoors and made of tarmac but a velodrome in East Sussex is the oldest in the UK, according to British Park Velodrome in Brighton was dug out by hand by the British Army and opened for competition in competitive racing stopped in 2014 after the track was declared unsafe, resuming two years later after safety Rogers, cyclist and author, said the track was "both unusual and unique". The velodrome in Brighton is one of just a few to not be oval-shaped, instead comprising of the rather unusual four straights and two slightly banked corners. Mr Rogers said: "Unlike velodromes we see in the Olympics, this one has almost no banking. "It is flat all the way around."As tracks go it is pretty rough. It is tarmac and outdoors."Most tracks are now built indoors with 250m of Siberian pine." As well as being the oldest track in the country, Preston Park claims to also be the longest, at 579m (1900 ft).Mr Rogers said: "It is the only track in the country where you go uphill along the back straight and then downhill. "People who come here to compete from other parts of the country are quite taken aback and can't believe it's still here in this form." Between 3,000 and 5,000 spectators were a regular occurrence up until the Rogers said: "In its heyday there would probably be big crowds here, probably bigger than to watch nearby Brighton & Hove Albion."The velodrome boasts a cricket pitch on the grass in its centre. It is tucked away beneath Victorian flint walls. Mr Rogers said: "One of the beauties of it is that it is hidden. "It's a pleasant place to picnic, to relax and to ride."

Stomach infection forces Carapaz out of Tour de France
June 29 (Reuters) - Ecuador's Richard Carapaz, who finished third at the Giro d'Italia earlier this month, will miss the Tour de France, which starts next week, due to a stomach infection, his team EF Education-EasyPost said on Saturday. Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Carapaz, who won the mountains classification at last year's Tour de France, had abdominal pain and a high fever and was advised by doctors to avoid long-haul travel and competition, the team said in a statement. "It's with great sadness that I have to tell you that a gastrointestinal infection is forcing me to miss the Tour de France," Carapaz wrote on Instagram. "Not the best news, but health always comes first. Thank you all for your messages and support." Carapaz, 32, will take a few weeks off to recover before resuming his training with a focus on the Vuelta a Espana, which starts in August, his team added. The Tour de France will begin on July 5 in Lille and conclude on the Champs-Elysees in Paris on July 27.

New scheme to offer free pool access for children
Free swimming sessions have been made available for children under the age of eight living in the south of the Isle of Man under a new Splash is a scheme at Southern Swimming Pool which provides free access for children from reception up to Year 3 in the southern catchment year-long initiative aims to ease financial pressure on families while encouraging children to gain confidence and enjoy the 2023, the pool had been under threat of closure by the Department for Education, Sport and Culture due to a shortfall in regional subsidies before a plan was backed to continue operations under existing funding. Under the scheme, children will be given free pass cards and would need to be accompanied by someone over the age of 16. Laurence Vaughan-Williams, Chairman of the pool's board said he hoped it would not only help fill the pool, but also provide a "modest profit" as they would be accompanied by paying said while "many children may not be gifted, or have that natural co-ordination", having access to the pool was a "gateway to a lifetime of swimming, enjoyment and all the health benefits that it brings".Children who are eligible for the scheme need to attend Arbory, Ballasalla, Rushen, Scoill Phurt Le Moirrey, Victoria Road, and The Buchan primary initiative, launched this weekend, will run until 31 August 2026 and levels of success would be assessed through attendance figures. Funded by the Southern Authorities Healthcare Trust, Mr Vaughan-Williams said there was the potential for it to continue past the added that the pool, which has been running since the late 1970s, has seen "quite a number of people who have gone on to achieve excellent results in international competitions from having their start at that pool".
