ANKARA: A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Marmaris area of southwestern Turkey early on Tuesday, killing one teenager and injuring dozens of people, the interior minister said. The quake, which Turkey's AFAD disaster agency said struck at 2:17 am (2317 GMT on Monday) some 10 kilometres (six miles) off the coast of Marmaris, was also felt in Greece and as far away as Egypt. A 14-year-old girl died following a panic attack and some 70 people were hurt in the Mugla province as they rushed to find safety, including 'some who jumped from a height', Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on X. There were no initial reports of buildings destroyed in residential areas, he said. 'In Fethiye, a 14-year-old girl named Afranur Gunlu was taken to the hospital due to a panic attack but, unfortunately, despite all interventions, she passed away,' Yerlikaya said. Fethiyeh lies around 100 kilometres to the east of Marmaris. Of those injured, 14 were treated at the scene, eight were briefly treated then discharged and another 46 were being treated in hospital, he said. Many popular seaside resorts are located in Mugla province, including Marmaris, Bodrum and Fethiye, which welcomed 3.7 million foreign visitors in 2024, the Anatolu state news agency said. The earthquake was also 'broadly felt' in Greece's Dodecanese islands, the national quake protection authority chief Efthymios Lekkas told the enikos.gr news portal, saying some tourists in Rhodes had been forced to evacuate their hotels. But there were no reports of injuries, he said. It was also felt in Egypt, according to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? British Airways owner IAG beats Q2 profit estimates
LONDON: British Airways owner IAG reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings on Friday, helped by strong demand for its transatlantic routes despite fears of knock-on effects from US President Donald Trump's tariff war. Europe's airlines have broadly managed to dodge turmoil over tariffs, with Air France-KLM and Lufthansa reporting strong second quarters and confirming their annual forecasts this week. IAG reported operating profit of €1.68 billion (US$1.92 billion) for the quarter, compared with analysts' average forecast of €1.40 billion in an LSEG poll and up 35 per cent from a €1.20 billion profit in the same period last year. "We continue to benefit from the trend of a structural shift in consumer spending towards travel. We remain focused on our market-leading brands and core geographies, where we continue to see robust performance," Chief Executive Luis Gallego said in a statement. The group confirmed its full-year financial forecasts and said it was seeing strong demand in its core North Atlantic markets, as well as Latin America and Europe. IAG's shares were up 2.1 per cent at 0709 GMT. While Gallego acknowledged volatility in the US economic situation, he said any weakness was mitigated by strengths in other parts of the business. "The US point-of-sale economy cabin is still weak but it's offset by the strong premium cabin we have ... but it has been improving in the past few weeks," Gallego told reporters on a media call. US airlines have not fared as well, with Delta pulling its full-year guidance this spring over worries about declining demand. Growth in the Latin American market has also continued to boost the business, Gallego added. IAG shares have been among the strongest performers among European airlines in recent years, but this year it has slightly lagged rivals Lufthansa and Air France-KLM as they have recovered from cost pressures.

Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew is confident that Sabah will fully unleash its potential as a leading destination for Business Events (BE) or Meeting, Incentive, Convention & Exhibition (MICE) tourism. She said going by the relentless efforts made by the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Sabah is on the right track towards reaching this milestone in the not too distant future. 'We (Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment) fully support the SICC-organised Bigsabah Sale 2025 from October 31 to November 2, given its role in driving domestic tourism, empowering local entrepreneurs, and elevating Sabah's profile in the regional economic landscape. 'I understand that the event will feature 500 booths, up from 300 in 2024, and is expected to attract 50,000 visitors,' Liew said after a courtesy call by the Chief Executive Officer of SICC, Datuk Dr Hajah Rosmawati Haji Lasuki on Tuesday. The Minister also noted that Sabah through the SICC is strengthening regional ties ahead of the event with expanded international participation. In her briefing, Dr Rosmawati, who is the Event Organising Chairman, stressed that Bigsabah Sale 2025 aims to further strengthen Sabah's positioning as the gateway to East Asean and the Asia Pacific region. Towards this end, for the first time, a curated B2B component will also be introduced for participants to create meaningful trade connections and unlock regional opportunities, she said. 'Which is why we are focusing on the 80 million population of the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area) region. Sabah can serve as a platform for these countries and other regions to promote their products and services. 'In this respect, we are stimulating growing international interest by extending invitations to other countries, including China, the Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan, to take part in this year's event. 'We are pleased to confirm that Thailand is committed to participating with 20 booths,' the Organising Chairman said, while enlightening the Minister on the momentum gained from her recent promotional visits to Brunei and Indonesia, along with outreach efforts across Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur, to build regional participation and connect businesses to Sabah's growing marketplace. To be spread across two themed zones, Gourmet & Home Living and Decor (Level 2) and Fashion & Lifestyle (Level 4), Bigsabah Sale 2025 promises an immersive showcase of culture, commerce, cuisine, fashion, and collaboration, Dr Rosmawati added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Quintonil: Mexico's boundary-pushing culinary love story
MEXICO CITY: Behind the global acclaim of Quintonil, ranked third in 'The World's 50 Best Restaurants,' lies a love story between two gourmets passionate about redefining Mexican cuisine. Named after an aromatic Oaxacan plant, the restaurant merges traditional flavors with modern techniques, earning praise for its 'boundary-pushing' dishes. Alejandra Flores, co-founder of Quintonil, embodies Mexican hospitality, describing service as 'a dance' or even 'an embrace.' The intimate dining space, far from ostentatious, reflects the understated elegance that has drawn international diners to Mexico City. Head chef Jorge Vallejo, formerly of Pujol, credits his mentor Enrique Olvera for elevating Mexican gastronomy. 'Twenty years ago, people knew very little about what Mexican cuisine really is,' Vallejo said. Today, Quintonil showcases Mexico's diverse culinary heritage, from street tacos to refined dishes like vegetable mole with asparagus. With 98% of ingredients sourced locally, Quintonil highlights seasonal produce alongside staples like corn and tomatoes. Vallejo's dedication to local suppliers includes white beans from Sinaloa, reinforcing the restaurant's commitment to authenticity. The Michelin Guide praises Quintonil's 'constantly evolving' tasting menu, featuring innovative pairings like crab with blue corn tostada and pipian verde infused with galangal and lemongrass. The restaurant's success, according to critics, lies in its 'enticing melding of local product, execution, and creativity.' - AFP
