Boston Celtics jersey history No. 28 - Sam Cassell (2008)
The Boston Celtics have had players suiting up in a total of 68 different jersey numbers (and have three others not part of any numerical series) since their founding at the dawn of the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- the league that would become today's NBA), worn by well over 500 players in the course of Celtics history. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. With 25 of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Celtics to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover. And for today's article, we will continue with the eighth of 14 people to wear the No. 28, Boston guard alum (and current assistant coach) Sam Cassell. After ending his college career at Florida State, Cassell was picked up with the 24th overall selection of the 1993 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. The Baltimore, Maryland native also played for the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, (then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Los Angeles Clippers before signing with Boston for the final 17 games of his NBA career as a player in 2008, helping to win his final of three titles won as a player. During his time suiting up for the Celtics, Cassell wore only jersey No. 28 and put up 7.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.

Best of Jayson Tatum with the Boston Celtics in 2024-25
We may not get to see star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum on a basketball court for his team again until the start of the NBA's 2026-27 regular season. The St. Louis native tore his Achilles tendon playing the New York Knicks in the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals second round series that would Boston's last in the 2025 NBA Playoffs. Fans of Tatum and the Celtics will likely grow restless waiting for his return to the team, but the folks behind the official Celtics YouTube channel put together a clip of the best of the Duke alum's plays from the 2024-25 season to keep us all occupied while we wait for Tatum to get back to being himself. We might have a shot at seeing him back late in 2025-26, but in the likely case he elects to wait until the following season to return to the court, check out the clip embedded below for your Taco Jay fix in the meantime.

Boston Celtics Get Huge Jayson Tatum Injury Update
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Celtics are entering what could be a throwaway season in the 2025-26 campaign. After Jayson Tatum went down with a torn Achilles in the second round of the NBA Playoffs, the team underwent major changes during the offseason. Jrue Holiday was traded away to the Portland Trail Blazers. Following that move, the Celtics traded Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks. Their main return in those two trades were Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang. More Photo byDespite how disappointing the offseason has been for Boston fans, the Celtics have received some huge news. Tatum seems to be progressing very well in his recovery from the Achilles tear. Read more: Lakers' Luka Doncic Sends Clear Warning to NBA After Extension As shared by Heavy NBA reporter Steve Bulpett, an NBA scout gave an update about Tatum. He seems to be well ahead of pace in his recovery. "He was moving really well. There might have been a slight limp or something, but the surprising thing to me is that he didn't have a boot for any of it," the scout said. "I'm no doctor, but I've seen guys coming back from Achilles' tears, and he looked way ahead. I was kind of shocked to see how well he was moving. I have no idea for what any of this means for when he can come back. I'm sure him and the Celtics' medical people have their program set up, and they'll make sure that he's where he needs to be when he does get back. But he looks great right now. Of course, he didn't do any running or even jogging, but he was in great shape and he had no trouble doing his part at the camp." Could there be a chance that Tatum returns to the court during the 2025-26 season? Fans will have to wait patiently to find out that answer. Read more: Pelicans' Zion Williamson Receives Major Future Update There is no point to rushing Tatum back. If he needs to miss the entire season to come back fully healthy with no risk of injuring the Achilles again, then that will be the path Boston takes. Tatum put together another big season during the 2024-25 season. In 72 games with the Celtics, he averaged 26.8 points per game to go along with 8.7 rebounds, six assists, and 1.1 steals, while shooting 45.2 percent from the floor and 34.3 percent from three-point distance. Expect to hear more updates about Tatum in the coming weeks and months. For now, this is great news for Boston that gives hope of a potential return quicker than expected.
