At least one injured as fire guts multiple factories in Pakistan's Karachi
The fire engulfed four factories, including Y G Textile and MF Roomi Textile, at the Landhi Export Processing Zone, with 11 fire brigade trucks and one snorkel taking part in the firefighting operation.
The operation was facing difficulties due to the intensity of smoke and shortage of water in the city of roughly 20 million people, according to rescue officials.
'One person was injured after part of the affected buildings collapsed,' Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hasaan Khan told Arab News.
The Rescue 1122 team is making efforts to control the blaze by utilizing all possible resources.
Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and commercial capital, is home to hundreds of thousands of industrial units and some of the tallest buildings in the South Asian country. The megapolis, known for its fragile firefighting system and poor safety controls, witnesses hundreds of fire incidents annually.
In Nov. last year, a blaze at a shopping mall killed around a dozen people and injured several others. In April 2023, four firefighters died and nearly a dozen others were injured after a blaze erupted at a garment factory, while 10 people were killed in a massive fire at a chemical factory in the city in August 2021.
In the deadliest such incident, 260 people were killed in 2012 after being trapped inside a garment factory when a fire broke out.

Saudi Arabia's KSrelief completes distribution of 6,000 food packages in Azad Kashmir
ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia's King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) announced on Tuesday it has completed the distribution of 6,000 food packages in Pakistan-administered Kashmir among families affected by natural disasters. The Saudi organization has one of the largest humanitarian budgets available to any aid agency worldwide, which has allowed its officials to undertake a wide variety of projects in more than 100 countries. KSrelief has launched several projects in Pakistan over the years, providing relief to thousands of people suffering from calamities such as floods and earthquakes. 'King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) has successfully completed the distribution of 6,000 food packages to families affected by natural disasters across ten districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir,' the aid agency said in a statement. It said 325 food packages were distributed in Azad Kashmir capital Muzaffarabad, 542 in Jhelum Valley, 433 in Neelum, 796 in Kotli, 281 in Bhimber, 250 in Mirpur, 1,040 in Sudhnoti, 1,073 in Poonch, 934 in Haveli and 326 in Bagh. KSrelief said each food package weighed 95kg and included 80kg of flour, five liters of cooking oil, five kg of sugar, and five kg of lentils (chana dal). It said the humanitarian aid initiative was carried out in close coordination with Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the State Disaster Management Authority of Azad Kashmir and the Hayat Foundation. 'More than 41,121 individuals directly benefited from this effort, which stands as a testament to KS relief's strong commitment to supporting and rehabilitating disaster-affected communities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir,' KSrelief said. According to its website, KSrelief has completed 241 projects in Pakistan costing $217,045,152. These include the distribution of shelter and non-food items, health, education, agriculture, nutrition and early recovery initiatives.

Pakistan to probe train derailment that injured 27 near Lahore this week
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will conduct an inquiry into the derailment of the Islamabad Express in the coming week, an official statement said on Saturday, after three cars of the passenger train went off the tracks a day earlier near the eastern city of Lahore, injuring at least 27 people. The derailment took place in the town of Kala Shah Kaku as the train was en route to Lahore. While no fatalities were reported, women and children were among the injured, all of whom were later listed in stable condition, according to railways officials. 'Federal Government Inspector of Railways, Mr. Aamir Nisar Chaudhry, will conduct an inquiry into the derailment of the ... Islamabad Express that occurred on the evening of August 1, 2025,' said a statement issued by the Railways Headquarters in Lahore. 'The inquiry will take place from August 4 to August 6, 2025.' It said the inspector will be available to meet anyone with relevant information during the inquiry period. The statement also invited individuals to submit written reports by post to the official conducting the inquiry, assuring the identity of informants would be kept confidential. It said all possible factors contributing to the incident will be examined, and the investigation will be conducted transparently and without external influence. The final report is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Railways within seven days. Pakistan Railways has been attempting to modernize its aging network with new trains and an overhaul of the 1,687-kilometer Karachi-Peshawar Main Line (ML-1), aimed at doubling tracks, upgrading signals and raising train speeds to 140 km/h. Train accidents are relatively common in Pakistan, where the railway system has suffered from decades of underinvestment, outdated tracks, and aging signal infrastructure. KSrelief distributes 3,989 food parcels in Afghanistan and Pakistan
RIYADH: The Kingdom's aid agency KSrelief recently distributed 3,989 food parcels to vulnerable people in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Saudi Press Agency reported earlier this week. In Afghanistan, 115 parcels were distributed in Omari Camp, at the Torkham border crossing in Nangarhar Province, to Afghan returnees from Pakistan. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, 3,874 food parcels were distributed to flood-affected communities, including in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (Haveli, Muzaffarabad, and Poonch), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Upper Dir and Torghar), and Punjab (Layyah district). A total of 27,094 vulnerable individuals benefited from the initiative, according to KSrelief.
