Aaron-Wooi Yik urged to snatch world No 1 ranking

KUALA LUMPUR: They may be good friends off court, but on it, the rivalry between Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani is reaching boiling point.
And national coach Herry IP wants his charges, world No 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik, to dethrone compatriots and snatch the world No 1 ranking as soon as possible.
Preferably, before the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25-31.
Herry, known in badminton circles as the 'Magician', believes the Asian champions are in a perfect position to leapfrog independent pair Sze Fei-Izzuddin and head to Paris with the best possible seeding and momentum in their bid to win a second world title.
There's a real opportunity for Aaron-Wooi Yik to overtake the top-ranked pair by shining in next month's Japan Open (July 15-20) and China Open (July 22-27).
Sze Fei-Izzuddin will be under pressure to defend their points, having won both events last year, while Aaron-Wooi Yik are set to gain significantly, having not competed in either tournament in 2024.
"Aaron-Wooi Yik are already in a strong position. But if they can become world No 1, why not?" said Herry at the Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara on Friday.
"It will help them in the seeding and draw process at the World Championships.
"Of course, it's not just about the ranking. They're preparing to do well in both Japan and China."
Currently, Sze Fei-Izzuddin lead with 91,090 points, with Aaron–Wooi Yik just 1,220 points behind on 89,870.
The China Open offers 13,500 ranking points to the winners, while the Japan Open champions will collect 11,000 points.
Herry also believes that even world No 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun shouldn't be ruled out of the race.

Snooker heartbreak as Thor and Lim's brave run ends in final defeat to India

File pix of Thor Chuan Leong (left) and Lim Kok Leong with their medals for the men's snooker singles at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games. — GLENN GUAN/The Star PETALING JAYA: Rory Thor Chuan Leong and Lim Kok Leong's gallant bid to bring home the first Asian 6-Red Snooker Team Championship title for Malaysia ended with a 1-3 defeat at the hands of India tonight (June 28). Newly crowned 6-Red Asian individual champion Chuan Leong made a good start when he overcame Brijesh Damani 68-58 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. However, India levelled the tie after Pankaj Arjan Advani won the next singles match against Kok Leong 66-25. India were in front after Advani-Damani combined to overcome Chuan Leong-Kok Leong 75-33 in the doubles match. Advani put up a clinical performance in the reverse singles match to seal victory for India, beating Chuan Leong 58-1. The Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MSBF) president Melvin Chia applauded the duo for fighting hard to raise the flag for Malaysia on the international stage again. "There was not much expected from both of them as this was their very first tournament since they represented Malaysia at the Cambodia SEA Games two years ago. "It was a very satisfactory achievement to bring back one gold and one silver. "Our next goal after this is to get ready for the Thailand SEA Games in December," he said. The Malaysian duo can certainly hold their heads high as they had performed well throughout the tournament to enter the final for the first time. Chuan Leong-Kok Leong were impressive earlier as they beat favourites Pakistan A 3-1 to set up a final clash against India, who carved out a 3-2 win over Hong Kong A in the other semi-final match earlier in the day. Malaysia had fought hard to beat Hong Kong B 3-2 to reach the semis and assure a medal.

Jonassen rearranges training sessions in bid to uncover more talent

KUALA LUMPUR: In a move to identify potential players to strengthen the singles department, Kenneth Jonassen has adjusted the national training programme. The national singles coaching director has arranged for the senior and junior shuttlers to training simultaneously beginning this week. The singles shuttlers will have a three-hour court session at Academy Badminton Malaysia between 7am and 10am, and the doubles players will train from 10am to 1pm. Jonassen said the new training system will be tried out for several weeks. Previously, the senior singles and doubles players train until 10.30am daily, and the juniors begin their sessions at 11am. It is also seen as a move to reduce congestion during the senior sessions which involve close to 60 players, including 15 singles shuttlers, utilising 18 courts. "We will collect data or information from all sides to see the pros and cons of the changes and adjust accordingly," said Jonassen. The joint sessions will also likely allow the Danish coach to monitor the progress of the junior singles shuttlers under Datuk Tey Seu Bock. One such player is 16-year-old Lee Mun who has switched from girls' doubles to singles as Jonassen has been trying to unearth more potential players to beef up the senior squad.
