Call to make premarital screening compulsory gains pace in Oman
Ibri – Ministry of Health held a seminar in Ibri, Dhahirah on Tuesday highlighting the vital role of premarital medical screening in building healthy families and raising community awareness.
Held under the theme 'Premarital Medical Screening: A Step Towards Building a Healthy Family and an Informed Society', the seminar formed part of National Premarital Screening Programme to promote awareness on premarital testing.
It was organised by the Directorate General of Health Services in Dhahirah and held under the patronage of Najib bin Ali al Rawas, Governor of Dhahirah.
The seminar underscored the need to intensify awareness campaigns targeting youth and those preparing for marriage, and called for making premarital screening a mandatory requirement.
Participants also recommended the establishment of dedicated counseling sessions to help prospective couples understand and manage test results in a scientific and compassionate manner. Emphasis was placed on upholding confidentiality and privacy of test results, and on preventing any misuse of such information. The seminar further called for stronger collaboration between health, educational, media and religious institutions to support and promote a culture of premarital testing.
Among the recommendations was the need to provide psychological and social support for couples whose test results are incompatible, especially in cases where health issues could impact marriage plans.
Inclusion of premarital screening topics in school curricula from Grades 10 to 12 and at the university level was also proposed to promote early awareness, foster scientific research, and reduce the incidence of genetic diseases.
These initiatives align with Oman Vision 2040 objectives for public health and quality of life, focusing on prevention and community wellbeing.
Dr Ahmed bin Saeed al Kalbani, Director General of Health Services in Dhahirah, described premarital screening as a cornerstone to preventing hereditary diseases, and a proactive step that can spare families long-term suffering.
The seminar featured several presentations by specialists on the medical, social and legal aspects of screening.
Prof Dr Salam bin Salem al Kindi, Senior Consultant of Hematology at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, reviewed key genetic diseases covered by the National Premarital Screening Programme.
Dr Sarah bint Nasser al Waili, Director of Primary Healthcare Department, outlined the objectives and implementation mechanisms of the National Premarital Screening Programme.

Global problem of drug abuse is a multifaceted challenge
Muscat: As the world marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Thursday, the problem continues to harm societies worldwide, impacting even younger people. The UN, supported by individuals, communities and various organisations globally, aims to raise awareness of the significant issue that drugs pose to society. The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, also known as World Drug Day, is observed on June 26 every year. In Oman, ongoing efforts are being made to combat the spread of drugs and psychotropic substances. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Committee for Narcotics and Psychoactive Substances (NCNPS), organises competitions for community projects aimed at reducing drug and psychoactive substance abuse. The community-based initiative has been successful. Last year, in its third edition, 28 projects participated, with 19 projects qualifying for the competition. According to experts, what makes drugs fatal is addiction. Dr Hamed al Sinawi, Senior Psychiatrist at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, stated, "Illicit drug use is an international problem that claims the lives of thousands of people worldwide." He emphasised that this year's campaign aims to raise awareness about treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy. Providing evidence-based, voluntary services, offering alternatives to punishment, prioritising prevention and leading with compassion are crucial aspects of the campaign. Dr Hamed pointed out that the negative impact of drug addiction extends beyond the individuals addicted to drugs to the entire community. He stressed that addressing illicit drug use is everybody's business. Dr Rajshree Narayankutty, a surgeon, highlighted the importance of parents having open conversations with their children to prevent drug abuse. The global problem of drug abuse is a multifaceted challenge that impacts millions of people worldwide. The UN emphasises the need for a scientific, evidence-based approach that prioritises prevention and treatment. This year's campaign, titled "Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime," calls for investment in prevention and addressing root causes to break the cycle of organised crime and drug trafficking.

Oman participates in Arab forum for equality in Algeria
Algiers: The Sultanate of Oman participated on Wednesday in the Fourth Arab Forum for Equality 'Dialogue and Solutions' 2025, organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development, represented Oman at the forum. This year's forum focused on discussing regional priorities to address inequality and social protection amid the crises facing the Arab region. It examined how social protection systems can reduce inequalities stemming from economic, environmental, humanitarian, and political challenges, while promoting inclusive and sustainable development. During a panel discussion on 'Financing Comprehensive Social Protection,' Dr. Al Najjar highlighted Oman's key national experiences and practices in this field, including the implementation of a social protection system to enhance financial and operational efficiency, diversify funding sources, and provide direct cash benefits to the elderly, children, orphans, widows, persons with disabilities, and low-income families. She also addressed ways to strengthen integration between government and private sectors and civil society institutions to expand social protection coverage. Emphasising that investment in social protection is a cornerstone for achieving sustainable development and social well-being, she noted its alignment with the goals of 'Oman Vision 2040.' The forum, attended by ministers, officials, private sector representatives, civil society organisations, and experts, facilitated the exchange of national and international experiences on reducing inequality in the Arab region. It showcased best regional and global practices in social protection systems, their role in mitigating inequality, supporting vulnerable groups, and engaging stakeholders in solution-driven dialogue to enhance social cohesion. Sessions covered topics such as 'Extending Social Protection to the Informal Sector,' 'Social Protection Under War, Israeli Occupation, and Conflict,' 'Social Protection as a Pathway to Reducing Inequality,' and 'Innovative Solutions to Strengthen Social Protection.' Cold plasma technology introduced in Oman
Neoplas Argon Jet was launched after successful trials and a landmark symposium attended by over 150 healthcare professionals, including 80 Omani doctors specialising in infection control and paediatric surgery from hospitals under the Ministry of Health as well as from the private sector. A major advancement in wound care and infection management technology was celebrated at an event attended by top officials from the Ministry of Health with the official launch of the Neoplas Argon Jet Cold Plasma treatment in Oman. Oman has a 17 per cent increase in diabetic cases annually, prompting the medical community to explore innovative treatment methods. The CE MDR-approved German technology was introduced following successful clinical evaluations at Khoula Hospital and Oman International Hospital. To mark the launch organised by Alfarsi National Enterprises, a high-profile medical symposium was held in Muscat, drawing over 150 doctors and healthcare professionals from across the country. The event brought together leading experts from Europe and Oman for a full day of scientific exchange, practical insight, and a live demonstration of the device. Fatma al Adawi, a Podiatrist at Oman International Hospital, shared that the symposium was a valuable experience. The science behind cold plasma therapy shows promise, especially for chronic wound management. The groundbreaking Neoplas Argon Jet utilises cold atmospheric argon plasma to accelerate wound healing, stimulate tissue regeneration, and inactivate pathogens without pain or side effects. Its use in treating diabetic foot ulcers, chronic wounds, dermatological lesions and post-surgical infections has shown remarkable results in clinical settings at MoH hospitals. The symposium featured renowned speakers including Dr Christian Seebauer, Dr Aleksandra Szlachcic, and Prof. Dr Ralf Lobmann, who shared their expertise in plasma-based wound care, dermatology, and diabetic foot ulcers, respectively. Dr Klaus Ruhnau, COO of Neoplas Med GmbH, also addressed the audience, highlighting the global momentum behind cold plasma therapy.
